Shuttleworth Fellowship

By dwhly | 21 December, 2012

Hypothes.is has just been awarded a Shuttleworth Fellowship for the 2013 year. Though the fellowship is technically awarded to an individual, the considerable funding it provides will help us bring on additional folks to deliver a fully functioning prototype and begin launching within early communities of interest by the end of this next year.

The Shuttleworth Foundation was started in 2001 by Mark Shuttleworth, the South African entrepreneur who founded Thawte, one of the web’s original digital certificate companies (we used Thawte for our very first HTTPS certificate in 1995 at Internet Travel Network because they were the only one that would give us the wildcard for *.itn.net). He also founded Canonical which funds the development of the Ubuntu Linux distribution.

Shuttleworth supports individuals working on projects that focus on creating positive social change–particularly in the area of open source technology. We can’t imagine a better fit for our mission, and we’re thrilled to have an opportunity to work with them and the other Fellows this coming year.

We’re grateful to the many who have encouraged us over the last year and recommended us for this award. This is as much a testament to that support as the efforts of our team.
