    1. Our solution was to introduce Crystalle, Geoff, Jamie Ann, Malcolm, Mary, and Robert without images and then have the OER designers participate in the persona construction by finding an appropriate image to represent the persona(s) chosen.

How would image construction and image without impact the experience? I think that is the important question here. How does narrative impact what images are chosen during persona construction?

    2. ABE SME

I wonder if there should have been more about the subject matter expert and who they are. As the comment above mentions, it's easy to switch into stereotyping. Who are these people and what are their subjectitivites.

    3. empathy and detachment means designers are distanced, and designers are involved in the action to feel that both matter.

This seems to be not unlike other professions (e.g. law and medicine for instance) where both narrative and detachment matter.

    4. persona provides narrative tension and an element of surprise, designers find it easier to talk about users, remember users, and get a shared view of users

I'm curious to know more about making personas both surprising and believable.

    5. do personas appear realistic to the people they are supposed to represent

I draw also from qualitative literature on this idea. Would people reading the personas see themselves in the persona? Also, when we write personas, I wonder if we should use more authentic language such as the person might describe themselves.

    6. motivation is critical for an effective empathic design process

We were mentioning in our group that motivation was one of the most important things we needed to think about when persona constructing.

    7. [e]mpathy is the key word, and, when combined with creativity,

Both these things are kind of soft, intangible skills, possibly not the easiest thing to measure. It would be interesting to think more about how to teach these skills to (future) IDs.

    8. esign commitment and decisions meeting users’ personal experiences and private contexts

The use of commitment is being used in an intriguing way here. Once we have a product, we want it to work, thus design has to be committed to achieving certain objectives.

    9. idea of a mask worn during drama performances and ritual activities

This connection is interesting as it seems to be a taking on of characteristics such as an actor or someone dressing up. We may not know who exactly the learner will be, but we can develop personas that embody the learner.

    10. empathic design process

When we show empathy, we can deepen connection with learners. I would think that it would be more difficult to do effective learning design without connecting with learners.

    11. figures (e.g., “How old is he?”), but rather about finding out why a new friend loves collecting butterflies or what game he loves best

I think this is a contrast between something that might be done and something that gives a bit more depth.
