I use a model for analysis that goes like this:

1. What is the "text"?
2. What is the context?
3. What is the subtext?

I initially used this model to teach 8th graders about how to analyze political cartoons. Later I used it as a tool for analyzing all manner of media. I have added a fourth text to this.
