Stocking rate is defined as the number of animals on a given area of land over a certain period of time, gen-erally calculated in Animal Days per Acre (AD/Ac). An Animal Day (AD) is the amount of forage required for one, 1,000 lb. cow with calf for one day (see Figure 1), equivalent to 30 lbs. of air-dry forage. Livestock forage needs of different breeds, classes, and/or sizes are all compared to the equivalent of one cow/calf pair (see Table 1).
