In the black southern community, daughters were punished more severely than their brothers. This is because of the already existing gender expectations placed on black women. The girls were always expected to remain quiet, however, it is sometimes possible for boys to interject as they have the possibility to preach in a church.

The only speech that was deemed orthodox for women to use, was talking into thin air. By doing that it inherently silenced their voice while giving them the illusion of actually being heard. On the contrary, black male preachers were to be heard and remembered.

The southern black community had a hierarchy for gender roles and children. Black males typically dominated preaching within the church which led to the women being dominate in "preaching" within the household. The kids were not allowed to give their own opinions on the topics discussed within the house as it was seen as them trying to be "equals" with the adults.
