The host responds to the biofilms by mobilizing macrophages and neutrophils to the biofilm area, resulting in secretions of high levels of reactive oxygen species and proteases that can cause damage to the normal and healing tissue. The resulting increase in exudate production provides a source of nutrients to the biofilms, leading to more resistance to healing.
