    1. The valley of ashes is bounded on one side by a small foul river,

In the beggining of this chapter the author uses words such as gray, ashes, solemn, foul, grotesque, and bleak to describe the setting. I relate this back to Greek Mythology when stories describe Hades demeanor and the underworld. For example in the underworld issouly made to fulfill the dead as to why the dark, and spooky descriptions. Also the river in the book represents the Archeon (river of woe), Lethe (river of forgetfulness) and many others.

    2. "You see," cried Catherine triumphantly. She lowered her voice again. "It's really his wife that's keeping them apart. She's a Catholic, and they don't believe in divorce." Daisy was not a Catholic, and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie.

Pinocchio always tells elaborate or even simple lies, but the point is that sometimes they are not believable to others. In this case Catherine's lie not being a least bit believable to Nick but rather shocking.

    3. "Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!" shouted Mrs. Wilson. "I'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai----" Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.

Last week I rewatched the Godfather Trilogy and this scene were Myrtle was fighting with Tom and he lost his temper and broke her nose is the same as in Godfather 2 were Michael and Kay get into an argument because Kay wants to leave him with their children Micheal gets upset and hits Kay. Only this fight is a little more escalated than in the book, but the concept of overpowerment is the same. https://youtu.be/G_9aawHCF0Y

    4. Taking my hat from the chandelier, I followed.

Two summers ago I read Slash's autobiography and found it very interesting. He is my favorite musician and guitar player, and from my favorite band Guns N' Roses. There was a part in the book were he had such a crazy night partying he woke up laying on top of a chandelier and his famous top hat was hanging from the other end.

    5. and swept into the kitchen, implying that a dozen chefs awaited her orders there.

I remember watching "Alice and Wonderland" as a little girl the animated one by disney. This scene from the movie is similar to where the walrus ordered the carpenter around in preparations to eat the oysters. The carpenter always expected the walrus orders when he swept into the room.
