The idea in the West is to make a product which will sell well.
It is incredibly interesting to see how society influences the story telling. With each translation the story of Ashenputtel/ Cinderalla which altered to fit the culture and society. Though I knew there was a distinction between the American and original German depiction of the same story, I never thought about why and how this came to be. After reflection, I realize that the American versions unconsciously or consciously sells the American dream. It sells the idea that success and a better life is possible for anyone regardless of where they start off. The American dream relies on the concept that America is a country of endless opportunities and where social and class mobility is possible. The story of cinderella portrays just that, of course with a bit of romantic touch, it follows the story of a girl who was poor and miserable but ended up with the prince- being able to jump social classes.
