    1. You must take it up on Christian ground, and fight against it with Christian weapons, whilst your feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. And you are now loudly called upon by the cries of the widow and the orphan, to arise and gird yourselves for this great moral conflict, with the whole armour of righteousness upon the right hand and on the left.

      Angelina Grimke is asking women to stand up and fight the unfair government. She is asking them to do it for the widows and orphans that have already suffered from the slavery.

    2. if a self evident truth that all men every where and of every color are born equal, and have an inalienable right to liberty, then it is equally true that no man can be born a slave, and no man can ever rightfully be reduced to involuntary bondage and held as a slave, however fair may be the claim of his master or mistress through wills and title-deeds….

      She is reminding her audience regarding the " all men are created equal and it she not be only white people.

    3. Yes! Sisters in Christ I feel an interest in you, and often has the secret prayer arisen on your behalf, Lord “open thou their eyes that they may see wondrous things out of thy Law”—It is then, because I do feel and do pray for you, that I thus address you upon a subject about which of all others, perhaps you would rather not hear any thing;

      Angelina Grimke is trying to identify herself with the other slaved women and asking them to open their eyes to the problem going on.

    4. and I ask you now, for the sake of former confidence and former friendship, to read the following pages in the spirit of calm investigation and fervent prayer. It is because you have known me, that I write thus unto you.

      This is Angelina Grimke opening statement asking other black slaves and Christians to hear what she has to say. She is asking to be opened minded, and calm since she is a woman that has advocated for slaves.

    1. And on the 12th of May, 1828, I heard a loud noise in the heavens, and the Spirit instantly appeared to me and said the Serpent was loosened, and Christ had laid down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men, and that I should take it on and fight against the Serpent, for the time was fast approaching when the first should be last and the last should be first.

      I interpret this as the moment Nat Turner felt the uprising should begin. He felt Christ had sent the message with the spirit to fight for his freedom He describes the white people as the serpent. He knew the fight was going to be violent and that he might pay the price for creating a revolt.

    2. that I should return to the service of my earthly master—“For he who knoweth his Master’s will, and doeth it not, shall be beaten with many stripes, and thus, have I chastened you.” And the negroes found fault, and murmured against me, saying that if they had my sense they would not serve any master in the world.

      Nat Turner came back and knew he would be beaten and punished. He was criticized by the other slaves and told him that if they had the chance to escape they would have never returned to any master.

    3. The Spirit that spoke to the prophets in former days—and I was greatly astonished, and for two years prayed continually, whenever my duty would permit—and then again I had the same revelation, which fully confirmed me in the impression that I was ordained for some great purpose in the hands of the Almighty. Several years rolled round, in which many events occurred to strengthen me in this my belief.

      Seems as it Nat Turner prayed and thought about being free someday. He explains that God had spoken to him and told him he would be doing something important in the near future. As the years past he understood what it was that he was suppose to do which was lead the slaves to freedom.

    1. How dreadful is the state of those that are daily and hourly in danger of this great wrath, and infinite misery! But this is the dismal case of every soul in this congregation, that has not been born again, however moral and strict, sober and religious they may otherwise be. Oh that you would consider it, whether you be young or old. There is reason to think, that there are many in this congregation now hearing this discourse, that will actually be the subjects of this very misery to all eternity. We know not who they are, or in what seats they sit, or what thoughts they now have: it may be they are now at ease, and hear all these things without much disturbance, and are now flattering themselves that they are not the persons, promising themselves that they shall escape. If we knew that there was one person, and but one, in the whole congregation that was to be the subject of this misery, what an awful thing would it be to think of! If we knew who it was, what an awful sight would it be to see such a person! How might all the rest of the congregation lift up a lamentable and bitter cry over him! But alas! instead of one, how many is it likely will remember this discourse in hell? And it would be a wonder if some that are now present, should not be in hell in a very short time, before this year is out. And it would be no wonder if some person that now sits here in some seat of this meeting house in health, and quiet and secure, should be there before tomorrow morning. Those of you that finally continue in a natural condition, that shall keep out of hell longest, will be there in a little time! your damnation don’t slumber; it will come swiftly, and in all probability very suddenly upon many of you. You have reason to wonder, that you are not already in hell. ‘Tis doubtless the case of some that heretofore you have seen and known, that never deserved hell more than you, and that heretofore appeared as likely to have been now alive as you: their case is past all hope; they are crying in extreme misery and perfect despair; but here you are in the land of the living, and in the house of God, and have an opportunity to obtain salvation. What would not those poor damned, hopeless souls give for one day’s such opportunity as you now enjoy!

      Jonathan Edwards is preaching to his congregation in a very vivid manner how they need to reflected on their lives and ways of living. He is trying to explain to them that giving yourself to God is the only way into salvation. Jonathan Edwards explains that if you are not born again and repent for your sins you will be going to hell. He explains that God's forgiveness of sins is the only reason they are not in hell at this moment. He explained that turning to God now and not later needs to be done before it is to late.
