    1. I also know that school and society add various levels of stress to folks

True, but not necessarily society and school, however, in my opinion, I would say that it is the system we live in that has shaped the way people live in our world from back then till this moment.

    2. dialogue with input from everyone,

One of my teachers used to mention to the class that real learning happens when it is not just the teacher who is talking, but all students are sharing and discussing their ideas.

    3. self-assessmen

I am starting to like “self-assessment”. The first time I was introduced to it was back when I was a senior. My Government&Economic class teacher used this method, it was very strange at first, but when you brought it up last semester and since I was familiar with it, it was not just a method to grade my work, but a change for me to look back at my work, see how I improved, what did I learn, and how much is there left for me. Plus, I know myself better than others, so I know if I was lacking off.

    4. college is a great place to start doing that.

I am wondering why college is the place to start from.

I have spoken to other people and teachers in the past, asking them questions and some mentioned that they would teach kindergarten students because it is there where you could make a meaningful change at such an early age, others mentioned during middle school because it’s a critical period of time for students to learn. And few stood saying high school since it is when the transition from high school to college happens.

    5. I have learnedfrom my family, my communities, and my various academic mentors that college can be a placewhere change happens from the bottom up, meaning students’ experience and values should becentral to how we construct our curriculum. Your opinions and voices matter to me!

I agree and like what you stated, I hope this applies to not just college, but other levels of schools.

Out of curiosity, why does it have to be a college where the change could happen?

    1. As a “living,” truly Open Educational Resource

I honestly like reading this textbook. It is super useful and filled with much to learn. And the idea of it being revised and edited all the time is impressive.

    2. flexible mindset

Being open to learning and trying new things, that opens up opportunities for you to obtain new skills and understand certain stuff from a different perspective.

    1. Summarize the source

By summarizing a source we learn more about it as we will be reading it more carefully, think of the presented information, and give our opinion.

    1. Using Notecards or Sticky notes to Organize your Research

I like this idea, I do not usually use sticky notes, I like to write my ideas either with bullet points, or freestyle writing.

    1. Creating your Healthy Information Ecosystem

It is like the way we consume and perceives information. From where they are what they are.

    1. Yes, you can use Wikipedia

This is surprising. I know that it has a lot of information collected but I have been told it is an unreliable source as it can be written and edited by anyone.

    1. Try using “AND,”  or “OR”

It is interesting to see how 1 word either “AND” or “OR” could make a difference in a search.

    1. What are some personal experiences you have that relate to larger social issues?

There are immigrants' rights and gender equality. There is also homelessness.

    1. develop skills to evaluate the credibility of all sources of information in your lives.

It's like using the "CRAP" test to test how realbile our the sources we are using but taking it to another step, to our daily lives.

    1. DISCUSSION FORUM

I am not usually a good presenter but I had one great presentation during my freshman year at high school for a portfolio presentation at the end of the school year for my English class. I think everyone liked it to the point I had to present it again for another class while being filmed. And to this day, the school uses my presentation as an example for other students. It’s kinda embarrassing, to be honest though.

    2. This gives your audience something to look forward to learning about and experience.

It's like a sneak peak of a film or a story. A little trailer to hype your audience and draw their attention so they want to know more, what happened next?

    1. Counter Arguments

I see it like this, you could have the best offensive lineup like the Brooklyn Nets, but don’t have any good defensive or dpeth in your bench to fight back then it’s a game over and it’s just a matter of time before it all crumbles down.

    1. Summarizing and Paraphrasing through Drawing

I never thought this is a thing, as writing and drawing are both two different things. But I know that are intertwined as drawing could illustrate the writing and emphasize it while writings make a story to be drawn.

    1. The Textual Evidence Sandwich

I really like how two paragraphs below explain "Textual Evidence" and put it as an example of making a sandwich. An example is how the text stated that the last piece of bread is like the analysis "for without the final piece of bread, the sandwich falls apart." The text pointed out.

    2. Discussion Forum

This little short nice video puts a little sparks on the writer's rhetorical situation as it explains some if not all the main points on how to tell a story. From the writer themselves, in the case of the video it’s Mr. Pete, to the audience who could vary from kids to adults and families, and serves a purpose which was to convey a meaning, a feeling.

Also, Mr. Pete said something about making the audience feel the same way as the charadher is the story, this technique draws attention to the character and strengthens the plot of the story as we (the viewers) have something to share with the story protagonist.

    3. The opinion you express in your thesis statement is the reason you are writing the essay

It sounds the same as purpose. The message/thesis statement to me serves the same goal as the purpose, intending to explain myself or my paper in hope to make my message heard across.

    1. 30% evidence and 70% analysis

Crazy stat, it was always evidence that I thought were more important but after reading this it makes sense. Analyzing and writing and making connections is more valuable and tougher to do as the text arrives.

    2. the art of persuasion

I do not know how to feel about that. I mean it is a useful method but at the same time, this is so powerful and if it falls into the wrong hands then it could lead to many disasters. How many innocent people will fall to believe some acquisition.

    1. 2.

The former president Barack Obama used all ethos, logos, and pathos at a great level. He used pathos the most as a way to connect to us (the audience) and gave vivid examples of how the little kids could feel as well as their parents. He then used logos giving logical and possible situations that could eventually happen and their impact over people. Finally, he ended it with ethos, which sounds okay but not totally convincing.

    2. DISCUSSION FORUM

First, from my point of view he did a nice job using all ethos, logos, and pathos. I think he is trying to tell us and show us some dangers of chemical weapons and how these weapons could harm people if they fell into the wrong hands. Also, he wants to spread awareness about this topic and because this headline came from him, everyone will believe him and leave people with knowledge so may be unreliable sources such as social media cannot take a grip of people.

    3. quick overview of Aristotle’s Rhetorical Techniques

“Impressive. Most impressive.” Darth Vader. I never saw it that way, Aristotle's Rhetorical Techniques explain a lot about our daily lives. Yes we could use these techniques through writing or even speaking but also to analyze everything around us and how others use them as well.

    1. I speak broken English so the profusing gashes can remind usThat our current state is not a mysteryI’m so tired of the negative images that are driving my people mad

Well, I think she is pointing out that the language she speaks is more than just language and words but also culture. And I am not sure but it looks like she is telling people to stop having this image of speaking differently than others, formally and fluently.

    2. This is not a promotion of ignoranceThis is a linguistic celebration

She is showing us that language is more These two sentences I found to be powerful as she is showing us that language is more than just grammar, rules, and being formal. Language carries history and with history, there are people, cultures, and feelings.

    1. Reading Aloud

Reading aloud my writing helps me to find mistakes such as grammar (most of the time) and the unclarity of the writing or paragraph.

    1. Word Choice:

When I write I usually repeat a lot of words. It is then that I revise as I try to change some of the words and see what works best and still makes sense without changing the meaning of the writing.

    1. “I’ve found the best way to revise your own work is to pretend that somebody else wrote it and then to rip the living shit out of it.”

I kinda like this idea. However, I would not go all out and slander myself. Instead, look at my writing and think, “How can I help this version of myself to be better?” treat yourself the way you want others to treat you.

    2. “Shitty First Draft.”

This sentence gives me the feeling that I am not a terrible writer because when I first read it I thought, “Hey! Others struggle with their writing. Even book authors!” It's amazing.

    3. One way to break into your thoughts and/or opinion about a writing assignment is to turn the assignment task into a question. Then, answer that question;

I really like this idea/step of wriitng. It is a must try!

    4. How do you know what you will write if you do not know what you think?

Such a good question. I usually start writing without implicating this step into my writing process. I instead proceed to write and think of what to write while writing.

    5. “Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”

I like this quote. I believe that in other words, the quote is saying that you need to move and take action.

    6. So your ability to express your ideas clearly and to understand your audience, your purpose for writing, and your responsibilities as a writer will make writing more enjoyable not only for you as you write but also for your audience as they read your work.

It all works like a relationship as an example. Being good at your job, your relationship (writing), and making a strong, fun, and nice connection with your partner (readers/audience). Finding enjoyment and your style in that relationship (finding enjoyment by writing) will put you in a better situation to succeed and learn more. But I do agree that when you comment and find connection, find the right person or thing, then you will have a better understanding of the world around you, your people, and yourself. It’s then when you are happy.

    1. In at least 100 words, share one helpful and one not helpful experience you have experienced with peer feedback? What would have changed the not helpful experience into a helpful one?

Alright, this experience is from my high school. It was not just for one of my classes, but his pattern appeared in almost all of my classes since we (the students) traveled to all classes as a cohort. I had some classmates that I would share my writing with, looking for their feedback. There were a few of them who would get back to me with very helpful feedback that would help me to improve my writing such as grammar mistakes, some ideas, clarification questions, and words of encouragement. However, there were many that would just tell me that my writing was perfect and nothing needed to change. This will not challenge me to learn and change something so I will feel like I am just repeating the same wiring process that I used and feel like I am not learning.

    1. Time to Draw!

I did this exercise and I would say that I don’t actually get the idea of it. I do have quite different lines but they all look like, ummm let’s say, “Lines?”

    1. Mind Mapping

I know that mind maps are a great tool to use to order your ideas. Then you connect more similar ideas to it as your branch from the main one. I don’t really use this technique but it’s quite helpful in some situations.

    1. In at least 100 words, please explain the process you go through when you write a paper. What steps do you take to move from beginning, middle, and end of a writing assignment?

Well, first of all, I think that this discussion form of writing's purpose is to test our writing process while writing about our writing process and steps. To be completely fair, I do drift off the writing/assignments a lot of the time. I tend to write about ideas and thoughts and aim less at their purposes and miss expanding on them. I usually start with the main point, move on with explaining it, and end it with a conclusion that comes to my mind or is based on either a personal experience or what the narrative is pointing out.

    1. “To sum up, reading always involves critical perception, interpretation, and re-writing what is read.” (Page 11, last paragraph, first sentence). This is a critical and essential learning piece. Reflecting on someone’s learning/reading will deepen the understanding of the context of the text.

    2. On page 10, “Learning to read and write means creating and assembling a written expression for what can be said orally.” I see this as a creative way for learners to express themselves and learn more about themselves more effectively and efficiently. It is also a good way to express someone’s feelings and anxiety and fears an example as the text points out (last paragraph of page 10).

    3. Something that stands out to me is when he visited his childhood house. The feeling he got from stepping on the floor he once crawled and learned to first walk on. It’s about holding a value in something that makes it so special. A personal example is the smell of fireworks. It might not be pleasant but when I smell it I get positive feelings and memories of my childhood.

    4. Pafe 7 is all about his childhood whiich to be honest, I am impressed with his long sharpe memory. And back to the text, he describes an early part of his childhood, giving a lot of details like his roundings, his feelings and thoughts.

    5. Page 6, second paragraph, I once did a similar exercise in one of my high school classes, when we recalled and relived a memory of ours based on sight, smell, hearing, tasting, and touch. Then we had to write about the event in detail.

    6. What does he mean by saying, "reading the word, not always the word-world in the course of my schooling."? (Page 6, paragraph 1, last sentence.)

    7. Page 5, paragraph 1, the first sentence. I am not totally sure if I got what the text and the author meant to say, but from my point of view I think it the text/author wanted to point out that to understand why reading is so important, we need to dive deeper and learn how our experience throughout our lives is meaningful?

    1. find YouTube videos and other more visual ways of organizing any information you read

I definitely agree with this strategy. For my other classes, I find that the reading alone does not help me to fully understand the text and the story in it so I watch some videos on YouTube and it surely gives me a better contest of the text and the story.

    2. I would not sell back my textbooks, largely because I had spent so much time annotating in the margins that I felt a certain amount of ownership over those books

I recently opened a backpack filled with my high school books and paperwork. I have collected them since I was a high school freshman. And now looking at my work, specifically my writing, and how much it changed, also shows that I have changed my identity as a reader, writer, and person.

    3. Schema-building: What does “reading” mean to you? Who are you as a reader? How would you describe your reading process?

Personally, reading means to take in information, data, or whatever the text is giving. Taking in information does not mean that you completely understand. As a reader, I read a lot of text, and most of the time I can not make sense of it. Sometimes it’s the words that I do not understand, other times I would understand the vocabulary, but just not able to make a full meaningful understanding of what the text is trying to say or mean. I tend to understand and read better when I read by myself quickly than reading out loud in a group. Also, when I do not understand, I usually reread the paragraph.

    1. ask questions about what the writer is doing, in addition to what the writer is saying in various parts of the text

I do not usually question the text I read but after reading this page of the reading I see why asking questions like a writer to have a better understanding of what the author wanted to convey to their readers and viewers.

    1. Skimming and Scanning

I usually take my time going through the text while reading and also taking notes while doing that. Then when I need to remember something in particular then I will use this method “Skimming and Scanning” for either the text or the notes I took.

  4. Aug 2022
    1. reading can be for everybody.

This drew my attention as a person who had once thought " Reading is not for me." Also heard it from others around me. Reading can be a way to connect to yourself by exploring new concepts and a new world.

    1. We’ve got our ideas; what are your learning goals as a student??? What are some strategies you will use to accomplish them?

Well as a student who is just one week into college I proceed to say that I am learning to know how to be a student at college level. I do not really have any hgihly effective and supoortive strategies on my bag, my bag is not that deep but I predict that will change eventually. I hope.

    1. they are also your allies and supporters.

This is something important to think about because I never really pay much of attention in this point of view. Sometimes I just forget that teachers/professors are also huamns like me and they do want me to succeed. Gotta keep this in mind.

    1. Before reading the narratives below, why do YOU think individual experience is important? How can we start to connect experiences in academic settings?

Well, I think that everyone's experience matters no matter how much or little people think they have encountered and experienced in their lives, because every experience holds a valubale lesson, meaning, or some time of connection which is what's so speacial about experience in my opinion. As a kid I was taught NEVER judge someone, God knows what people go through from very tough times. That is why I like to say, "Don't judge someone untile you walk in their shoe." I was first introduced to this when I read my first novel called, "Walk Two Moons" and what is so fascinating about experiences is the fact that when we share our experiences with others we learn more about people and potentially about ourselves as well and built some kind of a connection through experiences (In my opinion). I think that to share experiences in an academical setting could be done in diffrent types such as by writing as the text has mentioned, by talking and getting to know people better, any there might be many more that I am not awre of, yet.

    1. What do you believe your learning style is? If you were to place yourself on the Zone of Appropriate Challenge and Growth, where has the majority of your education taken place as a learner?

My learning style is a combination of hands-on and visual learning approach. I tend to like having visual examples of classwork so when I get to do it by myself I know what to do. I would say that if I place myself at the “Zone of Appropriate Challenge and Growth” chart and looking back at my high school days, it depended on the work and myself growth as I am not a native English speaker so reading and writing was pretty hard.

    2. the optimal zone for learning is the “Growth Zone,” right between “comfort” and “panic.”

Balance is the key! Just like everything else in life. We need to step out of our comfort zone and take the challenge but not to the point where we feel overwhelmed. It is balancing our learning and growth by knowing ourselves and our learning styles.

    1. These premises are:

All of the follwoing premises are such a great indaction all of the following premises are such a great indication of the support in students learning with various techniques. Ultimately all to further the students learning.

    1. challenges the old school learning model

I agree with Alfie Kohn on that, as a freshman undergraduate coming out of high school it feels different. I remember once when my class tried to change the learning style to something similar to this learning style. Sadly, it didn’t work.

    1. motivated by your connections

I tend to like things more when I feel connected to them somehow in someway. Like having a connection that I share with a character from a book, T.V show, reality, or videogame is something special and gives a very particular feeing.

    2. What is learning, and how do we learn best?

These are such great questions. And the answer to these questions will take honest deep thinking of one’s self.

    1. Prepare your mindset to be flexible and open to new reading and writing situations in college

I like this objective because being flexible and open to stepping out comfort zone could be a great opportunity to learn and grow as an individual and that could eventually be part of community growth that leads the people of the community to proceed to grow and learn.

    1. remember, I need you to never forget where you come from, who you are, who I am,

I feel like those are my grandfather's words for me telling me to rememeber my true identitiy.
