    3. The jigsaw puzzle came together piece by piece, and the real Rebecca took shape before me, stepping from h er shadow world like a living figure from a picture frame

We were only able to learn about Rebecca from stories we heard about her, but her own husband denounces her as an evil person. We see that she was not as spectacular as people made her out to be. She always put on a front to keep people from seeing her true personality.

    4. ''YOU thought I loved Rebecca? You thought I lulled her, loving her? I hated her, I tell you, our marriage was a farce. She was vicious, damnable, rotten through and through. 5. It seemed to me, as I sat there in b.ed, that there was nothing quite so shaming as a marriage that had failed. Failed after three months, as mine had done. For I had no illusions left now. Last night had. shown me too well. My marriage was a failure. I was too young for Maxim, too inexperienced. I was not of his world. The fact that I loved him in a sick, desperate way, like a child or a dog, did not matter. It was not the sort of love he needed. He wanted something that I could not give him, something he l1ad had before. He was not in love-with me, he had never loved me. It was just that he was a man, and he had been lonely. He did not belong to me at all, h e belonged to Rebecca. She was in the house still, as Mrs. Danvers had said; her footsteps sounded in the cor-ridors; her favorit~ flowers filled the rooms. Rebecca was still mistress of Manderley. Rebecca was still Mrs. de Winter. I had no business here

    6. And I realize, every day, that things I lack, confidence, grace, beauty, intelligence, wit-oh, all the qualities that mean most in a woman -she possessed

    7. He went out, and I r emember tl1inking this '\vas not how I had .iffiagined my first morning; I had seen us walking t ogether , arms iinked, to the sea.

    1. "Please don't take my sunshine ... away ..." Dan's voice faltered into silence.

Poor guy. His last words are significant. Even though he is singing the song, he is begging Anthony not to kill him. Also, it symbolizes the feelings of the townspeople because they wish that they can truly be happy in their lives.

    2. Nothing at all did any good except to live as they must live. Must always, always live, if Anthony would let them

It is ironic that the people have to live in fear each day but always must act as if it is a "good day." It is depressing to think about how these people don't have control/freedom in their lives because they have to act in a way that Anthony likes.

    3. when Anthony had crept from her womb and old Doc Bates--God rest him--had screamed and dropped him and tried to kill him

What a way to be born. It has negative and creepy tone to illustrate his birth.

    4. He liked all the attention he got when they did.

I feel like Anthony tries to help people, but it doesn't always have a good outcome. He definitely feels isolated and seeks attention because people are always avoiding him.

    5. He liked to help them. He liked to feel their simple gratification.

This describes Anthony as a thoughtful and caring boy, wanting to help those in need. It is the complete opposite of how his family and townspeople feel about him.

    6. his father had once said, smiling, that he might do that with the things he killed

This suggests that Anthony has killed before. It's interesting how it says "things" because it leaves it open to think about what other things he might have killed or plans to kill in the future.

    1. There mayhave been other passengers in the compartment, but I can’t rememberthem anymore.

The narrator points out that these specific characters are worth paying attention to and must have significance later in the story since she was able to remember them.

    1. The ogres of my mind are suddenly two lonely old cheeks coated with happy tears .... " people, wounded and abandoned,

His tone seems condescending. While he means to support her, he seems to disregard her input and values his own judgement over hers about of her health. He might be a doctor, but he isn't always at home to fully observe her.

    2. But I am here, and no person touches this paper but me—not alive!

Here, she expresses a violent/aggressive nature. This time, she even poses the idea that she would kill to keep this paper to herself. Makes you question what kind of mental state she is in?

    3. It used to disturb me at first. I thought seriously of burningthe house— to reach the smell.

She seems to be an observant and calculating person, but some of her thoughts seem to have a violent nature to them. In this example, there are more reasonable ways to take care of a smell than burning down the whole house.

    1. it’s rather annoying, which after a while could depress your morale; and you know just how important the serenity of the spirit is to one’s recovery.

This foreshadows Corte's future because we already see how invested he is in keeping track of what floor he is on an what it means. As he continues to be transferred, his fear increases and does not help his spirit to find peace. He is getting more sick, even if he can't see it.

    2. he was stunned by a strange shiver at the sight of the first-floor windows, the majority of which were always shut and whose proximity was much too close.

    3. Everything was peaceful, hospitable, and reassuring

The author makes it clear that this is a calm setting. Unlike how we usually associate dull and dreary feelings toward being in a hospital.

    4. But, he was tormented by the thought that two barriers had now arisen between him and the world of normal people.

The ranking of floors has taken hold of him, and he is becoming more obsessed with his status to get to the top.

    2. The grandmother shrieked. She scrambled to her feet and stood staring. “You’re The Misfit!”she said. “I recognized you at once!”

Bailey does not seem like a pleasant person to go traveling with. From the beginning of the story, he has had negative interactions or feelings toward his mother, showing that the they have a strained relationship.
