    1. However, the Dani were able to distinguish colors with the same ability as English speakers, despite having fewer words at their disposal

Maybe this is because color is a physical property and time is an intangible concept.

    2. We apply the rules of grammar to organize the lexicon in novel and creative ways,

I once read a book that described a concept called 'Selfing'. The concept was a discussion of the ways in which our language informs the way we think about the world around us. Specifically how the use of I Me and My tends to frame things around the ego. MY children or MY car informs the way you think of yourself.

    1. Physical dependence involves changes in normal bodily functions—the user will experience withdrawal from the drug upon cessation of use. In contrast, a person who has psychological dependence has an emotional, rather than physical, need for the drug and may use the drug to relieve psychological distress. Tolerance is linked to physiological dependence, and it occurs when a person requires more and more drug to achieve effects previously experienced at lower doses. Tolerance can cause the user to increase the amount of drug used to a dangerous level—even to the point of overdose and death.

It's extremely disappointing to me how addiction is stigmatized in this country. Addiction is a disease that requires treatment.

    1. effectively detect and classify the visual images

This reminds me of a video I watched about a way that scientists can recreate visual images of what someone imagines in their mind's eye.

    1. A stroke, caused by an interruption of blood flow to a region in the brain, causes a loss of brain function in the affected region.

My grandmother had a stroke when I was young

    1. The story of malaria fits with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection

Although evolution can seem very intentional, it is the result of random mutations. Sickle-cell may be a completely random mutation, not one that was selected.

    2. Despite the negative evolutionary effects associated with this genetic mutation, the sickle-cell gene remains relatively common

Could the mutation be caused by some type of outside influence?

    1. How do we determine if there is indeed a relationship between two things?

This reminds me of a study that investigated the relationship between mouth wash and mouth cancer. They discovered that people with mouth cancer bought mouthwash more frequently because mouth cancer causes bad breath. The initial hypothesis was that mouth wash was causing cancer.

    2. Krista and Tatiana are conjoined twins,

I just read an article written by a Canadian journalist scrutinizing the doctors that allowed these twins to be born. What a cruel take!

    3. If you walked out of your home and discovered a very aggressive snake waiting on your doorstep, your heart would begin to race and your stomach churn. According to the James-Lange theory, these physiological changes would result in your feeling of fear.

This reminds me of the argument against free will

    4. Hearing this, you do some internet searches, but you are overwhelmed by the breadth of information and the wide array of sources. You see blog posts, top-ten lists, advertisements from healthcare providers, and recommendations from several advocacy organizations. Why are there so many sites? Which are based in research, and which are not?

This is a reality I've been trying to convey to my older parents. Finding out if you're learning something from a credible source or not on the internet is not an innate skill.

    5. One such consequence can be seen in politics and public policy.

AI will only make it harder to determine the accuracy of online information especially political information.

    6. A psychologist interested in the relationship between behavior and exposure to violent images might ask these very questions.

I took a media studies class my freshman year that spent sometime discussing the different ways people are affected by media. For some it changes their behavior and others it affects their perspective.

    7. to determine how being among other people changes our own behavior and patterns of thinking.

This would dispute something from the last chapter that theorized people have all the tools necessary to process their own thoughts and emotions.

    8. “I believe that everything important in psychology (except … such matters as involve society and words) can be investigated in essence through the continued experimental and theoretical analysis of the determiners of rat behavior at a choice-point in a maze.”

There's no way this is true in my opinion

    9. structuralism

(a method of interpretation and analysis of aspects of human cognition, behavior, culture, and experience that focuses on relationships of contrast between elements in a conceptual system that reflect patterns underlying a superficial diversity.

    10. voluntarism—that people have free will and should know the intentions of a psychological experiment if they were participating

Would the placebo effect come into play if the participants understand what the experiment is attempting to investigate?

    1. replicate or build on the results.

I have heard that there has been rising concern in the field of psychology with replication. Is it true that there has been a replication crisis in psychology within the last 10 years?

    2. A hypothesis should fit into the context of a scientific theory,

How can we use the scientific method to investigate emotional problems? Does using the scientific method prohibit bias or emotional thinking?
