students who attend middle schools that rely heavily on suspensions are at greater risk of being arrested and incarcerated as young adults and less likely to graduate from high school and go to college
you cant drive a car if it doesnt have wheels. people expect dropouts to have the same knowledge as children in highschool, and then act surpried when they are incarcerated. then they tend to judge them based on their ethnicity instead of their background
-
superintendent’s approval is only required for long-term suspensions of 11 days or more
limiting the power helps a bit
-
White male students who are assigned a school that is one standard deviation stricter score about 0.06 standard deviations higher on middle-school math and reading tests.
what negatively impacts others, some benefit from it.
-
negative effects of lost instructional time for those students who were suspended and positive effects of reduced number of disruptive peers in the classroom for students who were not.
this creates a gap between the class, some people are way above the mark, while others can barely tag along in class
-
illegal drugs, fraud, arson, and burglary, but not in serious violent crimes like murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault
people perform minor crimes to support themselves, because they weren't given the chance to uplift themselves with education. they commit petty crimes to survive, but not major ones. (or they're just smart about the major ones and dont get caught)
-
one standard deviation in school strictness expands the likelihood of being suspended in a given school year by 1.7 percentage points, or 7 percent. The average annual number of days suspended per year grows by 0.38, a 16 percent increase
if one thing gets changed the whole outcome changes drastically

have
these stats show racial discrimination and how some groups are allowed to get away with things that others cant.
-
zero tolerance policies and authoritarian, non-compassionate classroom management tactics
minor misdemeanors can often result in jail time, or community service for a long time. in a different source, a poc child accidentally brought a small fabric scissor and was given two months of community service for it.
-
Sadly, students of color and students with disabilities 00:00:24 are disproportionately represented in these cases. Even more unfortunate is that these students are often referred to juvenile detention centers and ultimately end up in prison.
People of color are often discriminated against, which results in a high majority of them in prison.

expelled for bringing nail clippers or scissors to school
sharp objects such as knives arent allowed at school for obvious reasons, but some schools dont allow kids to have safety scissors
-
increases disengagement and dropouts, increasing the risk of later courtinvolvement.
kids don't believe that they need to go to school if the school doesnt have enough ways to keep them occupied. They think its a waste of time, so they often leave and do other things to occupy their time

History
Long term history can show you the community's traditions and things they've upheld for a while. Recent history can show you any political issues and current relationships among factions. This is valuable info when learning about specific communities.
-
The characteristics of those places can tell you a great deal about the people who make up the community. Their self-image, many of their attitudes, and their aspirations are often reflected in the places where they choose -- or are forced by circumstance or discrimination -- to live, work, gather, and play.
People identify themselves based on whatever they have grown up with. Their identity is formed around whatever they have learned in their community.
-
Every community has a physical presence of some sort
communities are physical. geographic regions usually play a major role in this, but online communities are also communities. Their physical presence is whatever platform you are using to communicate.
-
the word can really refer to any group sharing something in common
community is basically any physical shared aspects people have. they give us a few examples to show us what some forms of community is.
