What experiences should all children have much of the time?
What an impactful shift in thinking!

We recognize that all these languages need to be considered with equal dignity and value. They should receive support and adequate competent support from the adults and the environment.
I so wish the public education system in America could be Reggio inspired. We are just always cutting out more and more languages to make room for those that as a result white supremacy we deem as most important.
The pleasure of learning of knowing and understanding is one of the most important and basic feelings
The more we can foster this disposition, the more successful children will be in future learning environments and then later in work and relationships.

I imagine it wasn't easy tog et teachers on board at first. Makes me think of how so many of us are working to change the system and that if others aren't invested in the change it can be challenging to push forward.
A discussion should go on until a solution or next step becomes appar-ent; then tension dissipates and a new, shared understanding provides the basis for future joint activity or effort.
Titziana talked about this process at a workshop I went to last year. She said that she and the teachers often get into heated arguments but then 30 minutes later they’re sharing a cup of coffee or tea. It is very much a professional culture and not taken personally at all

Finding Challenging, Satisfying Problems
We know that the most challenging parts of life bring about the most learning and yet we often strive to protect children from any sort of adversity. This approach fights directly against that. To take on problems and challenges head-on – so much learning
The teacher can help the children uncover their own insights or questions, perhaps expressed by one child in a tentative or partial way—not fully clear to themselves or the group as a whole.
This is where video comes in handy for me. Sometimes when the work has fizzled out it’s helpful to watch that video and often a child says something that was missed that can be brought back to the group and reignite work again

Profound way of putting this.

I wish we could see capable in a nuanced way. Not that the whole child is more capable than another, but that everyone has their own passions and perspective which allow them to be a resource in one (or multiple) areas while others are resources in other areas. One child may learn from another in construction and then switch to the teacher role while painting.

It's so important to check our agendas at the door. Our adult brains are preventing us from seeing so much nuance and joy because of expectation

I worked in an infant program for just one year but looking back, so much of the stress of the room would have probably been alleviated had we been looking at the infants as competent.

We have to let children be with children
Ah, yes, here it is.
This is something that’s right forus and it’s right for the children.
This puts a lot of focus on thee interaction between the teacher and child. We often point children to their peers and try to take a back seat to that relationship. I wonder about the balance of these two.
It is also important for the teachers to enjoy beingwith the other teachers
I’ve seen this work best at schools that have a clear philosophy and common values. A strong foundation is imperative.

So so often! I look forward to the day when mainstream education looks different. It’s coming. I can feel it in my bones.
I noticed evidence of this thoughtful set up in the Everyday Utopias video. I was impressed with the flow from one space to another and how groups used the whole space in different ways.

wow, this is a large percentage. I wonder Reggio Emilia just has a high population of working families or if they just hold early education in such high regard. I imagine the latter given the community commitment to education.
youngteacher,
From the very start teachers and parents co-created Reggio schools. Prob what leads to (in addition to the general culture of the region) parent’s investment in schools.
