Public capital investment had initially been limited by the shortage of local resources,
Shows how harmful mercantilist capitalism can be in the long term, especially under a colonial structure .

750,000 to over 5 million, accounting for about half of all refugees worldwide
Makes you think about why European countries would send refugees back to dangerous places or why countries like Rwanda would want to take in refugees.
Messages in the Rwandan media
Especially with the recent American Fox News stuff going on I am thinking more about the absolute terror that misguiding media can inflict as apparent here...
rape as crime against humanity,
How did the conscious spread of HIV effect into this sentencing or was it not considered?
The external wars led to a reorganization of the state internally.
National security threats will always result in a more militant and densely powered federal government. This seemed to be the case in the 1750s in Rwanda and never seemed to really disperse.
supernatural powers
I am unsure of whether to consider this a religious underpinning or not...
lgiers is no longer the Arab city, but thetonomous area of Algiers, the nervous system of the enemyparatus.
Super cool description of an environment where knowledge and loyalty to the physical city is something that was extremely important in supporting the rebels during the military's conflict.
They use “Indian cunning” tocorner the Algerian and push him to painful decisions.
I am interested in the language of "Indian" and "Native" when writing about the different ethnic and racial dynamics at play in Algeria. How does race and religion come into play here?
bleed African tradeunions to death
God's Bits of Wood would be especially pertinent in a cross examination with this dynamic of SA anti-union legal efforts.
had to be suppressed
Interesting to recognize suppression as a form of legitimacy.

Migrant workers often are forced into modern slavery as seen in the historical precedent here.
n 1825 the M i n -istry reacted by offering a bounty of 100 francs a head for confiscatedslaves. S o m e thirty slave ships were seized at sea and taken to court,bringing the n u m b e r of those on which sentence was passed to the hundredm a r k .
Piracy and martime law are interesting to think about when concerned with something as transnational as the trans Atlantic slave trade.
Their slogan, ' T h e Negro is a m a n ' , implicitlyimpugned the generally held view about the propriety, legality and use-fulness of selling black Africans
I am curious as to how much the French Revolution had to play into this. I am reminded of the Rights of Man and Citizen here in language.
the “economic capitalization” of stolen culture through the art market
Especially pertinent because the art market is almost entirely comprised of the highest level of global aristocrats.
What is not being said?
A selection of manuscripts that may particularly pique users’ interest includes debates on whether smoking should be permitted; an argument for tolerance toward Christians and Jews; and Koranic self-help passages on improving orgasms.
You can see why Ansar Dine might be opposed to the material in these manuscripts, but why burn the rest of them?
Ansar Dine,
We have not talked a ton about the formation of terror groups in Africa. I would be interested to hear how colonialism helped to create these groups.
Telling people to hate whitesis an outward and reactionary type of preaching which, though understandable, is undesir-able and self-destructive.
This require remarkable empathy and forgiveness. Truly the sign of a fantastic leader
peace for all.
I am interested with the focus on peace within this speech especially concerning the violence perpetrated by the government to its own people.
to the lack of balance in the population caused by the continued absenceof a large n u m b e r of able-bodied m e n
This is something that I had not thought about. How are populations effected socially by the absence of a certain gendered group?
There were in Basutoland, Bechuanaland, Swaziland, M o z a m b i q u e ,Angola and Nyasaland numerous recruitment agents w h o deliberatelyenticed the illiterate peasants with advance payments and goods and withglamorous advertisements of urban life in South Africa and SouthernRhodesia. T
Were there any regulations to predatory practices like this? It seems a lot closer to enslavement than to a legal "free-market" at-will employment to me.
CCB,
I am interested in hearing more about how the CCB operated as a secret police similar to in authoritarian regimes of the 20th century. Who was in charge of them? How were they funded and armed?
There wereapproximately2,000-2,500foreignbusinessesoperatinginSouthAfricaby thattime—including 1,200British,350Germanand340Americanfirms—investingabout$30billionbytheearly1980sandaccountingforapproximately20percentofallindustryinthecountry
I wonder how much of this foreign investment was a product of Regan/Thatcher neo-liberalism as opposed to a dynamic that would have come into play. How did the economic advantages of having he South African repression as a means of cheap labor dull the movements against the apartheid government from exterior forces.
bust of former Belgian king Leopold lies on the ground at Stan-leyville on May 6, 1961, after it was removed from its base by Congolese work-ers. This bust, along with those of former Belgian king Albert and explorerHenry Stanley, symbols of brutal colonial rule under the Belgians, were takendown following Congolese independence and were replaced with statues of theslain leader Patrice Lumumba.
Shows the power of art and symbolism. Reminds me of the Civil War Confederacy statue debates happening in our country.
CIA agent Joseph Scheider arrives in Leopoldville withpoison to assassinate Lumumba.
Stuff like this is why I am reminded of the "Eric Andre Shot Hannibal Buress Meme" where countries like the US murder leaders (good ones or not) and prop up poorly based governments and then turn around and condem nations for instability and human rights violations.
Few other regions of the world show such a multitude offairly small States both as far as production and populationgo. The only similar region of some importance is CentralAmerica.
I really do think that the similarities between the intervention happening in Central America at the same time is worth talking about.

To maintain its foreign cash reserves, the Ghanaians negotiatedthat all payments be done in Ghanaian pounds.124 In a December 12, 1960, speechin Sunyani, northern Ghana, Nkrumah prophesized that a Soviet-poweredBui-Hydro- electric dam would electrify and supply “water to every town, vil-lage and cottage for miles and miles” in Ghana.12
I am reminded of what we talked about last week in the different sides of "development... how does the dam effect the people who live where it will be built? How is the environment hurt or helped with this dam?
The British pressed Nkrumah against hiring any communists in the Gold Coastgovernment.
I would be really interested to hear if there were any strategy meetings between the US and UK as this whole dynamic seems identical to what was happening in Latin America at the time.
young lady
It is interesting that there is obviously not only a "model minority" myth here that is apparent but also a gendered struggle apparent. This is an example of unnamed acknowledgement of intersectionality by the author.
native”
Interesting to use the word "native" here in quotations. I think that it is a reference to the fact that Arabic people were not "native" to northern Africa.
Namibia and Z i m b a b w e
If I am not mistaken, Somalia was also enjoying a golden era as well. Why were these countries having more success?
rican trades-unionism was thus moving from inter-racial class con-sciousness to nationalist rebellion. While the severe repressive measuresmeted out helped to give a political complexion to these movements, theyalso drove some of them back into traditional forms of resistance rep-resented by such messianic movements as Kibanguism, Matswanism andHamallism. T h u s an explosive mixture was being formed by groups cutoff from the mainstream in both towns and rural areas. This gave rise,in the 1950s, to the rebellion fomented by the Union des populations duCameroun ( U P C ) in Cameroon and to the M a u M a u insurrection inKenya.
Super interesting that there seems to be a labor movement happening at the same as in Central America. How does indigeneity come into play here?
T o summarize the comparison between C u b a and the Jewish state, whileIsrael had been a de facto ally of white supremacy, Castro's C u b a hadbeen involved in black liberation.
Woah. Super intriguing parallel here. How does race vs/ ethnicity come into play here? What about religious autonomy? Or is this just a matter of political differences?
Ancient
This is a pretty interesting way to celebrate the persistence and longstanding achievements of a nation over the course of centuries with just one word.
A feeling of political frustration among the educated Africans who saw no prospectof ever experiencing political power under existing conditions and who regarded the 1946Constitution as mere window-dressing designed to cover, but not to advance their naturalaspirations.
This is an example of the readings and conversation that we had last week that revolved around the Western education of African people becoming a catalyst for resistance movements such as Nnamdi Azikiwe.
espite this service, Africans re-turned to colonial subserviencefollowing both wars.
This is tragic yet seemingly a universal experience for Black people all over the world after West after the World Wars. I know that this was one of the main catalysts of the Civil Rights Movement in America and I wonder how that played into movements in Africa.
ssaults against German women
This is similar "black male sexual violence against white woman" rhetoric that is seen in the American South at the time, especially in films like Birth of a Nation.
quite free of racism
This section was a pleasant break from how dark and depressing the reading can be. I wonder if the Senegalese has similar experiences to Black Americans who faced harsh racism once they came back to the States after serving the war however.
the day will come when the Hottentots [Nama]will disappear, but it will not be a loss for humanity because they are all only bornrobbers and thieves, nothing more
Rhetoric like this is why the early readings in this course are so crucial to grasp. If we continue to use inaccurate and dehumanizing phrases and messaging to portray people (anywhere in the world for that matter) in Africa then more heinous and radical ideas like this can be supported.
Second, as a geographer, Ratzel would have conceived of his 1901theory knowing that Namibia was Germany’s most populous settler colony. Thus, when Hitler wrote about Lebensraum, in the 1920s, he was likely to havebeen appropriating an idea developed with colonial Namibia in mind.
This is an example of how tracking the use of specific language can help to better understand how certain ideas spread from person to person. The focus on terminology here is well executed and makes for robust source material to support the argument made in this piece.
Pan-African movement when it comes will not, however, be merely a narrow racialpropaganda. Already the more far-seeing Negroes sense the coming unities: a unity of theworking classes everywhere, a unity of the colored races, a new unity of men.
To what degree has this vision been realized? A part of me thinks that the pro-labour movements cross racal lines like he is explaining but I am not sure it has come to fruition in the way he describes specifically
oubtless they exaggerated the numbers, but they were clearly telling me what theyknew and loathed.
The tone of disbelief is evident even in this account. It reminds me of how we learned that different peoples histories are never written down but also different people's histories are never believed in the first place.
Several n e w schools wereopened, the best of which were run by the government, though there werealso s o m e educational activities by missionaries, particularly in the prov-inces.
Interesting how public versus religious educational systems are set up, especially when concerned with the orthodox centrality of Ethiopia and the non-Orhtodox influence of the Catholic Italians and protestant Americans.
hereby to gain influence in Addis A b a b a .
Italy supporting the entry into the League of Nations is noteworthy if not shocking to me.
T h e y began byexpressing their feelings on wage rates and prices; and ultimately they weredrawn into discussing the variety of social and political questions whichderived from and affected the colonial economy
It is interesting to think about how resentment toward capitalistic structures of colonial powers led many African countries to develop military alliances with communist countries in their fights for independence. Some examples of this would be North Korea's prevalence either in Uganda or Ethiopia.
however, the colonial states often had to bring pressureto bear on cultivators to ensure that they joined the colonial e c o n o m y andthat they did so on terms which European capital dictated
This is another example of how people resisted (like we talked about in the other class) by not participating in the economy. By boycotting European goods or refusing to operate in the trading system they hamstring investment to the colonial power and make the colonization itself less lucrative.
Italian Somaliland
Did a little wikipedia read of the history of Itlaian Somaliland and it is interesting how the nation became so developed so quickly. My hunch is that he Italians poured resources into the nation so that it could act as a base of operations in the longstanding conflicts with Ethiopia, but I would be curious to hear prof Anderson talk about it.
White Paper on K e n y a
Just did some research on this. I am curious to understand why somebody like Victor Cavendish might want to institute a policy like this.
employees
I wonder how many of these employees were paid
is policy of deceit and fraud had recoiled, broken topieces upon the straightforward truthful dealing of our commander; and his troops had beenscattered to the winds by the brave soldiers who had so well seconded the forethought, skill, and courage with which they had been directed by their general.
Racialized language regarding the morality of the people on each side here
Writing from the 'left
Interesting to note the distinction between the differing view points on the global right and left wings of politics in what seemed, at first to me, to be a historical happening before these modern notions of political wings.
I shouldalso like to have good roads and railways . . . But I will remain the Makombemy fathers have been.'
Such noteworthy resilience and power. Nothing really to say except to point out how incredible this kind of leadership is.
e efforts then m a d e to abolish the institution ofslavery, led to revolts which were easily crushed.
The efforts to abolish slavery lead to revolts of the people in Zanzibar? I understand that people had money and power also tied up in the slave trade, but this was still shocking to me.
W a r , then, is the inevitableconsequence of imperialism, the violent death of capitalism
I would be really interested to learn about how ideas of marxism spread throughout Africa, especially as anti European sentiments must have been very high at the same time that the USSR would have been formed.
We despair of saving the colony from those evils which threaten it by the turbulent anddishonest conduct of vagrants, who are allowed to infest the country in every part; nor do wesee any prospect of peace or happiness for our children in any country thus distracted by in-ternal commotions
It is eerie how similar these remarks are to right wing anti immigration remarks made around the world today, but particularly I am remind of, of course American GOP positions on immigration from the Southern border and the current right wing Spanish politicians who have similar remarks about people cmeing from North Africa.
Wilberforce
Is the the abolitionist William Wilberforce?
In industry and trade, unrestricted private enterprise was the rule.
Free market capitalism in effect, but there were alleged rules on where French oversight and power could be in charge legally. I feel like the capitalist ideal will over rule the initial law as separating the French and Arab centers in favor of whatever is more profitable.
In contrast with their rulers, the people in general, w h o bore the fullburden of building palaces, factories and barracks, were discontented withWesternization and the growth of foreign influence
I wonder to what extent did this feeling lead to the Arab Spring?
incommensurate
"having no common standard of measurement"
Observers should understand contemporary analyses of settler colonialism that focus on the event (rather than structure) of decolonization in light of the fantasy that reconciliation is possible, or even desirable.
I really appreciate how this article applies what might be considered historical theory to a actionable and tangible outcome; That is to say that to ignore the multinational structure of colonialism carried out across the globe is to make it easier to dismiss the atrocities ad injustices as a one time unique act.
sustain the myths
I am interested in the use of the word "myth" here and in the empty land meeting as well. What does the word 'myth' do here as opposed to words like 'lie' or something more within the framework of these fake histories having an intentionally false and deceptive quality.
Contemporary historical work shows that there was a long period of intermingling and integration between the western Xhosa and eastern Khoi, giving rise to the Khoi place names in Xhosa territory and the permeable nature of the boundaries between the two groups.
This reminded me of our lesson centered around the stratigraphy that we went over earlier in the semester. This shows how if there were ore careful (or willing) historians who had been familiar with that kind of study, then perhaps a relationship between the Khoi and the Xhosa might be better understood.
Despite the fact that these were very few and isolated incidents, the British and the Dutch jumped on them and vociferously used them to make a claim that the Xhosa had clearly taken all the land between the two rivers by the violent expulsion of the Khoikhoi.
This is another example of European colonial tactics that included using a history of local conflict (in this case over-selling a conflict) to their advantage in their annexing and violent takeover. European powers not only ignored the history of the people who lived on the Cape, but they went step further to bend the history to a narrative that supported their imperial actions of violence and oppression.
Broad brushstrokes throughout are good.
Criticism about generalization is the central theme of this satirical piece.
Don’t get boggeddown with precise descriptions. Africa is big: fifty-four countries, 900 millionpeople who are too busy starving and dying and warring and emigrating to readyour book.
This highlights how often content written about stories or people in Africa is so often not at all considerate of the subject of the content's reaction to or criticism of the work.
Tribal
This reminds me of other reading that explains how other terms (like group, village, etc.) is often more useful in accurately describing who you are writing about.
Granta
This publication is self defined as, "Granta magazine and Granta Books share a remit to discover and publish the best in new literary fiction, memoir, reportage and poetry from around the world." I am curious as to the readership of this publication and how the editors choose what to include and what not to.
