    1. n the first place, our honor as an independent nation is concerned in the establishment of literacy institutions adequate to all our own purposes, without sending our youth abroad or depending on other nations for books and instructors.

This shows that education was connected to the development of the new nation. The author believed that America needed its own education system instead of depending on other countries.

    2. The only practicable method to reform mankind is to begin with children, to banish, if possible, from their company every low-bred, drunken, immoral character.

This shows that people believed education could shape children’s behavior and character. They thought teaching children good values would help improve society in the future

    3. but with a view to improvementit is indispensably necessary that the teachers should possess good breeding and agreeable manners. In order to give full effect to instructions, it is requisite that they should proceed from a man who is loved and respected.

This shows that teachers were expected to be good role models. Students were more likely to respect and learn from teachers who were kind, respectful, and responsible.

    1. Some of these concerned ideology and the American ideals offreedom and equality

This shows that schools do more than teach academic subjects. They also teach students important social values, such as democracy, equality, and fairness.

    2. Eventually AfricanAmericans made schooling a defining issue in their struggle for civilrights, with the historic Browncase in 1954 standing as a turningpoint in the movement for equality.

This shows that education was an important part of the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans used education to fight against racism and discrimination and to achieve equal rights.

    3. By then ithad become so big and complex that debates occurred over itspurposes and functions. Some would say that it became amechanism for assigning people to different positions in the socialorder, a large-scale sorting machine (Spring, 1976)

This part is interesting because schools could affect a person’s future opportunities. Education could help students succeed, but it could also create or reinforce inequality by placing people into different social positions.

    1. For this reason society requires that the education of youth should be watched with the most scrupulous attention. Education, in a great measure, forms the moral characters of men, and morals are the basis of government. Education should therefore be the first care of a legislature, not merely the institution of schools but the furnishing of them with the best men for teachers. A good system of education should be the first article in the code of political regulations, for it is much easier to introduce and establish an effectual system for preserving morals than to correct by penal statutes the illeffects of a bad system.

I think this is interesting because the author believes that education is important for the whole society, not just for individual students. What children learn can affect their future and the future of the community. This makes me think that schools have a bigger responsibility than just teaching students academic subjects.

    2. But the principal defect in our plan of education in America is the want of good teachers in the academies and common schools. By good teachers I mean men of unblemished reputation and possessed of abilities competent to their stations. That a man should be master of what he undertakes to teach is a point that will not be disputed, and yet it is certain that abilities are often dispensed with, either through inattention or fear of expense.

I think having good teachers is very important because teachers have a big influence on students. A good teacher can help students understand new ideas and become more interested in learning. I agree with the author that education needs good teachers, not just schools and books.

    1. nderstanding today’sproblems sometimes requires looking to the past to find their roots. That can enhance the likelihood of finding effective solutions.

I agree with this idea because history can help us understand why problems exist today. Sometimes we only see the problem in the present, but we do not know how it started. Learning about the past can help us understand how schools and society have changed over time. I think this is important for future teachers because education today is connected to what happened in the past.

    2. Do schools change society, ordoes society change the schools? Obviously, the answer is morecomplicated than the question suggests

I think schools and society affect each other. Schools can change society, but society can also change schools.

    1. Most importantly, life chances depend increasingly on attaining higher education, but class back-ground is as important as ever in determining who attends and finishes a four-year college.

I agree that good teachers can make a big difference for students. I think every child should have the chance to learn from a good teacher.

    2. Similarly, it helps all children to have peers who take school seriously, behave in ways that help them learn, and are backed by parents who have the resources to en-sure that schools satisfactorily educate their children

I think it is interesting that having more money and resources can give children more educational opportunities. This shows that not every child starts with the same advantages. I think schools should try to give all students the same opportunities to succeed.
