    1. Addressing the Opposite Side oAny well-written argument must anticipate and address positions in opposition to the one being argued. oPointing out what your opposition is likely to say in response to your argument shows that you have thought critically about your topic. Addressing the opposite side actually makes your argument stronger! oGenerally, this takes the f

This will be the most important paragraph because you need to be the most persuasive and address your points. I feel like this will be the hardest paragraph for me.

    1. Do not leave them with the impression that your argument was vague or unsure. oWARNING: It's fine to introduce new in

This is so important because you want the readers to be persuaded and on your side of the argument at the end. If you end vague, you didn't do your job well enough.

    2. Explain Topic Sentence

I like this outline because it tells you more information and what everything means. For example this outline explains what you need to do to create a strong topic sentence.

    1. ESSAY OUTLINEI.Introduction:General info about topic, reason for reader to be interested, context, etc.Thesis statement:II. Topic Sentence 3:A.Support1.Detail/example/data/explanation2.Detail/example/etc.3.Detail/example/etc.B.Support1.Detail/example/etc.2.Detail/example/etc.3.Detail/example/etc

This is kind of how my past outlines were set up. Even though this outline is familiar, I might choose a different set up.

    1. Allen says, "but there were times in practice she'd want you to do something and she'd grab your jersey and yank you in an unnecessary way."

Similar to what my interviewee said about her experiences of an abusive training environment. Her coaches would kick their athletes for no reason. She told me they never abused her because she was the top girl in their gym, but she would see her other teammates being physically abused, which broke her heart.

    2. issues like bulimia and anorexia. I kept trying to reinforce to (Kassandra) that she's not overweight. I was worried some of the girls might take it to heart; I thought it was important that the girls don't buy into the idea that they're fat."

This is very true and sad. Lavonda should of not approached anyone of saying they should be on the weight watcher show. This could lead to eating disorders, which are so serious!

    3. Players and their families say university officials did not respond to years of complaints, but when it was announced that four players were leaving within six days, De Carolis said he felt his hand was forced.

I can't believe they didn't do anything about the complaints until four players decided to leave. Maybe the officials didn't know much about what Lavonda was doing.

    4. They say Wagner, 45, pressures athletes to play through serious injuries, threw a chair during a locker room tirade,

That is crazy how she threw a chair, like really? I wonder what made her throw it.

    1. Verbal and emotional abuse is much more common in athletics. It can lead to severe and long-lasting effects on the athlete’s social and emotional

I agree, but I would think that physical abuse would be most common in sports.

    2. paved to burnout, rebellion and hatred of a once-loved sport.

This sentence makes me feel sad because it's really sad how many athletes love their sport, but than they don't from burnout and an abusive relationship with their coach.

    3. Central to this old school mindset is the idea that threat, intimidation, fear, guilt, shame, and name-calling are all viable ways to push athletes to excel.

Yes being tough helps an athlete excel, but having fear and threats is too far and won't make an athlete succeed.

    1. So what is being done to prevent domestic violence among athletes? Very little.

This is sadly true because no matter what type of abuse happens to athletes, there is only a little bit of help to prevent this. Yet abuse still happens today, so everyone needs to change that.

    2. Athletes aren't bad people; they just don't have life skills.

I disagree because you learn a lot of life skills from sports. There might be some who don't learn or have no life skills, but most people do have them.

    3. "These exaggerations [in studies] do not discount that there is solid evidence of a problem in sport" and "Athletes are not necessarily more prone to domestic violence than others (quoted from The L.A. Times and Sports Illustrated)."

Probably don't have specific evidence because we don't know who ,when or where abuse is happening in the world.

    4. Athletes are praised as heroes for what they do on the playing field, but what they do off the field is never mentioned. As a disappointed sports fan, I want to draw attention to the domestic violence cases that involve athletes.

This is true in many cases because many people do not speak of the abuse happening to them. It's sad that many people keep it a secret for a long time. In fact, I just read an article about an Olympic gymnast who just spoke out about abuse after 5 years when it happened!

    1. Rhythmic gymnastics has a top score of 20.0 for each event:

This is just like artistic gymnastics score wise. It makes sense that they score the same type of way, but I never knew that!

    2. Rhythmic gymnasts should achieve a minimum of an 180-degree split on split leaps and jumps,

If I were to judge rhythmic gymnast, it would be hard because everyone is so flexible and is very good!!

    3. males are beginning to participate in rhythmic gymnastics. In this hybrid form of gymnastics, the athletes also perform tumbling and martial arts skills.

This is great that men are starting to do rhythmic gymnastics. It's hard for me to picture them being flexible, but I guess it's because they have different bodies.

    1. However, it is the girl who is able to put enough focus, drive and dedication into her routine that ends up on top.

In every sport you need to be focused as well to succeed.

    1. In today’s world, there is a lot of controversy over the fact that many rhythmic gymnasts are too thin and are not practicing healthy eating habits.  The idea of “perfection” is highly enforced when becoming a rhythmic gymnast.  If a girl wants to become an elite gymnast, not only does she need to perform the perfect routine, but she needs to have the “perfect" body as well.

I hear a lot about this kind of stuff. People say this sport's look is to look thin, but every athlete needs to eat and know their proper nutrient to be the best they can be.

    2. The simple sugars found in refined grains like white bread should be avoided as these do not provide long lasting energy.

This is important because you want to find something to eat that has carbs that contains long lasting energy, rather than eating short lasting carbs.

    1. Most endurance training is done outside of the gym, due to lack of time.

I wonder how many hours a regular rhythmic gymnast trains a day? My coach trained about 15 hours a day, so I wonder how some training facilities don't have enough time to train endurance?

    1. supported him when he almost made the 2012 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team in July 2012.

C.J talks about how he cried when he didn't make the Olympic team, but with his family's support he never gave up on his dream. Having an inspiring message like "Never give up" in a interview is great for listeners to learn and be inspired. This is an effective strategy for the listeners.

    2. The three sat down together at StoryCorps to talk about C.J.’s gymnastics career and the impact it has had on the whole family.

In this interview everyone is sharing great memories from CJ's gymnastics career so far and are all having a good time talking about them. This is an effective strategy because interviews should be fun and enjoyable, which is exactly what this interview is doing.

    1. At StoryCorps, father and son talked about Marat’s own journey to the NBA.

In this interview the son asks his father short questions instead of long ones to make it easier for his father to answer. Even with a short question his father, Leon, still talked a lot. If it were a longer sentence it would probably make his father take too much of the time answering just one question. This is an effective strategy.

    2. Growing up, Marat Kogut dreamed

In this interview, the son's dream wasn't supported by his mother, but he talks about how he went after his dream anyway. This is an effective strategy because it can inspire others to go after their dreams even if no one supports them.

    1. talk about some of the memories he had left.

Since Priya's father has memory loss, it's hard for him to remember his past. In the interview Priya helps her father by saying, "that's right" when he isn't sure of his answers. This strategy is effective because by helping her father, it keeps the interview going.

    2. stayed strong in his memory.

This is a great interview to show how Priya, who is interviewing her dad, has great listening skills and is respectful. She is patient when her father speaks slowly and doesn't mind repeating sentences her father can't hear. Also since her dad is older and doesn't speak that loud, she can still hear him by listening well. This is for sure a listening strategy.

    1. Conspiratorial thinking is also associated with narcissism, rejection of climate science,

I can see this being true, especially in the science world because many scientist have different theories about things causing them to make up stories that could not be true.

    2. Because conspiracy theories can influence people's attitudes towards individuals, social groups, institutions and policies, they're often of interest to those tracking public opinion and individual behavior.

This is true because conspiracy stories create lots of drama, which influence people's attitudes. Conspiracy stories can be so believing that many people believe it because not everyone can figure out that the story is fake.

    3. In that interview, Trump praised Jones for having an "amazing" reputation and his audience for its support.

Wait so does Donald Trump know about Jones' fake news? Or did Jones make it up about Trump saying that Jones has an amazing reputation?

    4. Jones has claimed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were an inside job, that the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax, and that President Obama would round up people into concentration camps.

How could Jones say that Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was a hoax and that Obama was going to put people in concentration camps, like obviously we all know that his facts were false. I wonder if anyone actually believed in what he said about this.

    1. when he shot and killed a teenage

Interesting interview, title of this interview made me instantly want to check out this story. I don't know how this woman could forgive this man who took the life of her child away. If I was in this situation I don't think I could ever forgive the person. This just shows how strong this woman is.

    1. Stockdale was able to send letters to his wife,

In the beginning of the interview, the son explained how his mother would make everyone eat a little bit of rice from the bowl that represents their father. This seemed weird to the family kids, but it is an actual normal example of what people do to keep the spirit of loved ones closer when they are not around. It is crazy that the wife talked to Adm. Stockdale for the first time in seven years, makes me feel their sympathy of not seeing each other in a long time.

    1. Their 16-minute long interview begins simply with Kara saying to her grandfather, “Tell me about yourself, where did you grow up?”

A great interview, really shows how much the granddaughter loves her grandpa and how the grandpa knows how much the granddaughter wants to know about his life. I hope I can do this with my grandparents because I want to learn more about their past and be able to tell stories about them in the future.

    1. Kellie was seven months pregnant in 2007 when she was arrested on a misdemeanor drug possession charge

It's sad what drugs can do to people. It is Good that Kellie turned her life around and is now educating others with her experience. This story reminds me of an article I recently read about a child who was born three months before the due date caused by her mother who drank alcohol. The child has a condition because of this effect. Sad.

    1. This new method of writing is a form of transitioning your sentences so that they can be as clear and easy to understand for your reader as possible.

I think this is a great method to use because it makes the reader pay more attention to the new information given without getting confused right away.

    1. n the occasion ofin a situation in which whenunder circumstances in which

All of those words are unnecesarry when you can simply just use the word "when". It makes my head hurt reading those pointless words, but by only using one word, it is way easier to understand.

    1. Does the last paragraph tie the paper together smoothly and end on a stimulating note, or does the paper just die a slow, redundant, lame, or abrupt death?

Conclusions should refer to the meaning of the story or lesson. For my narrative, it took a while to come up with a closure because I wanted to make sure the readers would understand the moral of the story.

    2. or coming up with more vivid examples to illustrate your points. Sometimes it means shifting the order of your paper to help the reader follow your argument, or to change the emphasis of your points. Sometimes it means adding or deleting material for balance or emphasis. And then, sadly, sometimes revision does mean trashing your first draft and starting from scratch. Better that than having the teacher trash your final paper.

Sometimes I have to write my entire story over again too, but it's worth a better writing piece. Usually for coming up with vivid examples for my story, I add figurative language so the reader can understand my story better.

    3. your aims be clear to your readers?

This is very important. I had to go back in my narrative to make sure the readers would understand the meaning and lesson of my story by adding more details throughout the entire story.

    4. A day—a few hours even—will work.

I think it's important to take time revising your writing because it can be stressful to change sentences and details in your story when your out of ideas. I think it's good to revise one pragraph at a time.

    5. So revision is a chance for you to look critically at what you have written to see if it’s really worth saying,

This is true and is important because usually when I write stories, I sometimes add ideas in my stories that didn't make sense or relate to the topic, so it's always good to look back at your work.

    6. But I thought revision was just fixing the commas and spelling.

That's what I thought a long time ago, but really you should try to add or delete writing in your narrative to make it better. I always try adding more details to my stories when I revise it.

    1. Burns the poet

The poem by Burns is good and I enjoy it, but it is kind of confusing with the wording because the language has many different words that I don't understand and I can only picture the poem in the last couple of stanzas. Without the english translation of the poem, it would be very difficult to understand the meaning of the poem.
