Ted Chiang. Will A.I. Become the New McKinsey? The New Yorker, May 2023. URL: https://www.newyorker.com/science/annals-of-artificial-intelligence/will-ai-become-the-new-mckinsey (visited on 2023-12-10).
The article delves into the ethical and societal implications of this technological shift, highlighting concerns about wealth concentration and worker displacement. It questions whether the current trajectory of A.I. development might exacerbate existing inequalities by centralizing power among those who control these technologies. The author also considers the possibility of alternative approaches to A.I. implementation that could promote more equitable outcomes, suggesting that the direction of A.I. development is not predetermined but subject to societal choices.
In essence, the article prompts readers to reflect on the broader consequences of integrating A.I. into sectors that have traditionally relied on human judgment and expertise, urging consideration of how these technologies can be harnessed to benefit society as a whole.

Ethics in Tech
What are the ethical implications of using automation in social media content generation and moderation? From my point of view, while automation in content generation and moderation can improve efficiency and scalability, it also introduces ethical dilemmas regarding misinformation, bias, censorship, privacy, and accountability. Striking a balance between automation and human oversight is crucial to ensuring that social media platforms remain ethical, fair, and transparent.Ethical automation should empower users rather than manipulate or silence them. The challenge lies in designing systems that serve the public good while minimizing harm.

This article points to a version of the Wikipedia page in Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC). The TRC is a committee established in South Africa after the end of apartheid, to investigate and expose past human rights violations and to promote reconciliation rather than the mere pursuit of punishment. In the context of public humiliation and social reacceptance, the TRC offers a possible model: an emphasis on truth, repentance, apology, and compensation. This suggests that society may be more willing to accept someone excluded from public humiliation, willing to blame, and willing to make up for their actions.

Public Criticism and Public Shaming
I would like to ask a question about What factors should determine whether someone can be forgiven or reintegrated into society after public shaming? I think whether people should be forgiven and reaccepted by public humiliation depends on multiple factors: the seriousness of the fault, whether the victim accepts the apology, whether the behavior has been corrected, and the public's tolerance. In addition, the social context, the direction of public opinion and the individual's initiative to take remedial actions are also crucial. True reflection and change, as well as the society's perception of error and a culture of forgiveness, determine whether a person can reintegrate into the society.

Crowdsourcing#
What are the potential benefits and challenges of using crowdsourcing in social media contexts? Crowdsourcing on social media offers vast benefits such as cost efficiency, diverse input, and quick scalability, enhancing engagement and community building. However, it faces challenges like ensuring quality control, managing a diverse group, and addressing ethical concerns over fair compensation. Privacy and data security are critical issues, given the reliance on technology, which also poses risks of technical failures. Effective crowdsourcing requires careful planning to balance these benefits and challenges, ensuring both the integrity and effectiveness of the collaborative efforts.

Volunteer Moderation
What are the psychological effects of content moderation work? For this question, I think content moderators often face psychological distress, including PTSD, anxiety, and emotional numbness, due to prolonged exposure to violent, abusive, or disturbing content. Many experience burnout, detachment, and depression, especially in underpaid, high-pressure environments. Lack of support from employers exacerbates these effects, leading to high turnover and the need for mental health interventions.

Moderation and Ethics
How do different ethical frameworks affect decisions about what to moderate? For this question, I think different ethical frameworks lead to varying moderation policies. Deontology enforces strict rules, moderating based on universal moral laws. Consequentialism focuses on the impact of content, removing harmful material to minimize harm. Virtue ethics prioritizes fostering a good online community. Ethics of care emphasizes protecting vulnerable users, while free speech-focused frameworks argue for minimal moderation.

] Devin Coldewey. Study finds Reddit's controversial ban of its most toxic subreddits actually worked. TechCrunch, September 2017. URL: https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/11/study-finds-reddits-controversial-ban-of-its-most-toxic-subreddits-actually-worked/ (visited on 2023-12-08).
This is a 2017 study analyzed the impact of Reddit's decision to ban its most toxic subreddits. The findings indicated that this action effectively reduced hate speech on the platform. Users who previously engaged in these banned communities either decreased their use of hate speech or left Reddit altogether. Additionally, the communities that absorbed these displaced users did not experience an increase in hate speech, suggesting that the bans had a positive overall effect on the platform's discourse. This outcome highlights the potential effectiveness of deplatforming as a strategy to curb harmful online behavior. By removing spaces that foster toxic content, platforms can discourage the proliferation of hate speech and create a more inclusive environment for all users.

That is to say, although people know that constantly reading negative news is harmful to their mental health, it is still difficult to resist because the "quality" of negative news is particularly high. This reflects the psychological state that people may struggle to stop browsing, even when they are aware of its harmful nature.

Demo: Only positive news
How can individuals create a healthier relationship with social media? For this question, I think first people can help build a healthy social platform by sharing low-energy comments or posts on social media. And people can also pay attention to the accounts that can bring positive energy, and close those accounts that spread negative energy or depressed them. These are all what I think will make sense.

There are also ways of replicating social media content that aren’t directly built into the social media platform, such as:
After reading this part, I came up a question-- How can individuals or companies use virality for positive social impact?I think for this issue, companies can let the public know by holding social issues about the core values of the brand. The Patagonia brand, for example, uses social media to promote environmental ideas, such as the "Don't buy this jacket" anti-consumerist campaign. Individuals can expand their influence by participating in charity events such as link voting.

Consider impact vs. intent. For example, consequentialism only cares about the impact of an action. How do you feel about the importance of impact and intent in the design of recommendation algorithms?
For this problem, first we need to know what impact and intent are.impact refers to the consequences of recommendation algorithms in the real world, while intent refers to the purpose that developers and platforms design recommendation algorithms. So I think impact is even more important for this issue. Because whether intent is good or bad, it will be impact that ultimately affects the public. If the algorithm creates problems such as the spread of misleading information, the spread of hate speech, and the deterioration of users' mental health, it is well-intentioned, but it still takes responsibility.

Some disabilities are visible disabilities that other people can notice by observing the disabled person (e.g., wearing glasses is an indication of a visual disability, or a missing limb might be noticeable). Other disabilities are invisible disabilities that other people cannot notice by observing the disabled person (e.g., chronic fatigue syndrome [j4], contact lenses for a visual disability, or a prosthetic for a missing limb covered by clothing). Sometimes people with invisible disabilities get unfairly accused of “faking” or “making up” their disability (e.g., someone who can walk short distances but needs to use a wheelchair when going long distances).
After reading those information, the question I want to ask is how to change the inclusiveness of the design industry? For this question, I think that first of all, we can add the help of the disabled people in the design process to ensure that their ideas can also be seen and accepted. Secondly, we can strengthen the education of barrier-free design, so that the public can understand the importance of this aspect, and do a good job from the training. They can also listen to the opinions of the disabled and improve the existing accessibility design, so that they can have a more convenient experience.

Security
This chapter is mainly about privacy ethics, corporate responsibility, and and the risks associated with digital footprints online. One question I would like to ask is the What security measures should individuals take to protect their accounts from hacking attempts? For this problem, I think we can choose a complex strong password when we set the password. And avoid public WiFi when you're outside, because it can be hijacked by hackers. I also usually bind a backup email or phone number to ensure that I can quickly retrieve my account when I lose my password.

Flooding Police app with K-pop videos#
Is trolls' behavior likely to drive positive change? I think it is possible, like when it is used as a means to fight injustice or express protest. K-pop fans interfered with the use of tools to counter demonstrators by uploading music videos flooding the system in a police reporting app. The example in this article is not so good, but it does work. But I think trolls' behavior is essentially destructive, only in certain or accidental times.

The article is about the story of American neuroscientist BethAnn McLaughlin, who created a false cyber identity. On 31 July 2020, McLaughlin claimed that the fictional professor died of COVID-19, leading to mourning and attention on social media. However, as the investigation progressed, it was discovered that the professor did not exist, and that her account was actually controlled by McLaughlin himself. After the incident was exposed, McLaughlin's Twitter account was banned for violating the platform's policies, and she was widely criticized and questioned for it. This incident is an example of personal moral problems, and it also reflects that the online world is not so strict in the management of false information.

Inauthenticity
For this question, I think the authenticity in the media is diverse. For example, people often share a good life to express or achieve some purpose. But the reality is often not so good. It's just the way people protect themselves in the media. Or the authenticity of some brands. Some brand accounts are displayed on social media in a perfect way, but the truth is that some brands are not as well packaged as they are.

Initially, the Brony culture emerged as a subculture, characterized by the desire for adult audiences to love a children's cartoon. Since the early Bony culture relied on 4chan for transmission, some of the harmful elements of the platform infiltrated the fan base. Graffiti and other notes left on walls were used for sharing updates, spreading rumors, and tracking accounts Books and news write-ups had to be copied by hand, so that only the most desired books went “viral” and spread Later, sometime after the printing press, Stondage highlights how there was an unusual period in American history that roughly took up the 1900s where, in America, news sources were centralized in certain newspapers and then the big 3 TV networks. In this period of time, these sources were roughly in agreement and broadcast news out to the country, making a more unified, consistent news environment (though, of course, we can point out how they were biased in ways like being almost exclusively white men).
In the absence of the Internet, the earliest forms of social media were graffiti, handcopying, language transmission, and so on. After the invention of printing art, the media gradually began to exist, and a large number of rumors also began to spread. What social characteristics reflect in the similarities between ancient and modern social media in spreading rumors and information?

Chapter4 tells the first is the most direct source, the user will actively provide some information, similar to the phone number, email address and so on. Secondly, the media platform will record the user's data, similar to the use of time and so on. So the media have a wide range of sources of data.

How are people’s expectations different for a bot and a “normal” user?
Chapter 3 focuses on Bots. First I learned that bots can do actions through social media accounts and can appear to be like any other user, and chapter 3 also discusses the ethical significance of bots. Like the division of responsibility between the person and the operator who created the robot. For the How are people's expectations different for a bot and a "normal" user? In this case, I think the biggest difference is that some of the comments and content posted by ordinary users are more real. Although it may be more subjective, it also draws some conclusions based on the user's personal feelings and experiences. But bots words have no personal emotion, and their statements are the product of code.

How do you think about the relationship between social media and “real life”?
I think the relationship between social media and real life is a reciprocal relationship. First of all, social media will let people learn about the real life and various information in the first time through the characteristics of rapid information dissemination. The emergence of social media has also changed the way people communicate, and online communication has made it easier for people to communicate. Of course, the impact of social media has both advantages and disadvantages. In real life, people also need to distinguish whether the information on social media is beneficial. Second, the impact of real life on social media also exists. For example, in the face of increasing pressure in real life, the significance of social media is becoming more and more important to people. To some extent, social media is a way for people to release their pressure. For example, during the COVID-19 period, offline communication is limited, and online communication software can meet the social needs of people in reality.

More on Ethics
For more ethics, I'd like to add a environmental ethics. People's actions will have a very important impact on the whole society, and everything that exists in the world is valuable and meaningful. For example, for social media, the impact of various platforms on natural resources is environmental ethics. To be more specific, social media like Facebook, TikTok, which is being used on a large scale, consumes a lot of energy to maintain the stable operation of the platform. In this similar situation, large companies can help protect the environment by using recyclable energy. This is the relationship between media and environment ethics, and the article can be enriched by adding this link.
