After reading the article "What is implicit bias?" I noticed implicit bias in this case, in the assumption that Latino individuals are “foreign” or suspicious. Though for Enrique this was just one of his experiences, like he mentioned, it is well known to many that bias opinion towards others ethnicity can harm one another both physically and mentally. Implicit bias can be harmful and lead many apart.

Enrique's stake is a sense of identity as a Mexican American individual and safety when confronted at a border checkpoint. He was cautious and aware of the reality of his scenario. At the end, he showed greater clarity about his own identity and confidence in his voice to speak up. He had shown great change, and even though this experience wasn't pleasant, the ability to continue and speak up about a hurtful issue he was able to persevere after reflecting.

    1. The theme I see within this story was self belief that helped motivate her campaign and her self-empowering, resilient mind. There were also challenging expectations, especially with a hard start to trying to speak up in politics as a black woman. Kathi had shown strong virtues of resilience that strengthened her appearance. She grew through risk when she challenged the limits others placed on her, and the ones she placed on herself. Kathi discovered unexpected strength throughout her entire campaign.

The story centers on a moment where Kathi Kinnear is telling herself what she can’t do. She is limiting her capabilities in her own mind, which is a problem she was facing in the beginning of her hardship. The real stakes are whether she will accept those limitations or challenge them. If she fails to surpass her limitations, she reinforces doubt and dwells in that state of despair. If she succeeds in pushing past her own limits, she reshapes her identity. In the end, Kathi was able to see light through these dark times in her memory and persevere past what once restrained her.

    1. For an example of how AI hallucinations can play out in the real world, consider the legal case of Mata v. Avianca. In this case, a New York attorney representing a client’s injury claim relied on ChatGPT to conduct his legal research. The federal judge overseeing the suit noted that the opinion contained internal citations and quotes that were nonexistent. Not only did the chatbot make them up, it even stipulated they were available in major legal databases (Weiser, 2023).

When first reading this passage it did shock me how AI can make up things on its own. I didn't believe that it had the ability to go off its script and go on its own track. This wowed me and definitely left me a little more cautious on what AI has to offer.

    2. These issues aren’t unique to image generators, either; researchers and users have found that text generators like ChatGPT may also produce harmful and biased content (Germain, 2023).

In this sentence we see that malfunctions don't only occur when AI is trying to generate and image but it also goes for text generator and researchers have found some errors in it. I had an English teacher tell me her students that were academically dishonest had gotten caught because the AI generator would make up false articles that didn't exist which gave them away in their assignments.

    1. You probably have the impression that line B is longer than line A, but in reality, both lines are equally long. What happens is that you are influenced by the arrows at the end of the lines even though you do not pay attention to the arrows or might even have the conscious goal not to be influenced by the arrows. You are implicitly biased by the arrows, that is, what you consciously perceive is influenced in a systematic manner by the arrows (i.e., you are biased) even though you do not intend to be influenced or might even want to prevent being influenced by the arrows (i.e., the bias is implicit).

This part has shocked me since I wasn't expecting it could be as small as which way the arrows face can be part of choosing a bias. It is simply our perspective, which can be all so different

    2. For instance, you might set yourself the conscious goal to pay attention only to relevant information such as the content of the CV. You put aside all other distractions like your cellphone so that you can devote your full attention to the interview and you take enough time out of your schedule for making the decision.

Reading this part of the article ties back to the subtitle of the article, where this type of bias happens in our everyday lives, mainly while employers are out there looking for candidates that fit the role. Though I found myself talking to a customer at my workplace explaining her past scenario where she had no education but years of experience, while her employers were looking for someone educated. She had ended up getting the job due to her experience, yet didn't fit the qualifications. She still managed to achieve a place in GMU finance department.
