I think it is interesting how it talks about the southern strategy still existing after so many decades. I think there are certain political strategies and ideas that will always exist even if it is just a little bit.

Routed by these attacks, more progressives have stopped talking about race and racism, lest they be accused the 'biggest bigots in the world'
I don't really see this as true. I think that a lot of progressives talk about race quite often, especially lately.
-
One thing about the reading that I am not a huge fan of is how it usually seems to put all Republicans and all Democrats in the same category when in reality even people in the same party can have varying ideas on a certain topic. I have felt this way throughout all of the readings.
-
I think that the 'racial pandering part of the reading is really interesting when it gave the example of a black woman talking about how all black people should keep Obama around. It seems to be really similar to some of the tactics other politicians have used to get votes from the earlier readings.

After reading this I think it is interesting to think about the 2016 Presidential candidates and how they talked about race.
-
I think it is interesting when it talks about the Presidential elections and how the candidates took on the issue of race. Much of what they said seems so strategic that it almost feels like we don't even know what they really think. I think a lot of that has to do with there being a lot more white presidential candidates and none of them knew what life for a minority was really like (nobody knows what life is like for a minority unless you are one).

I think the part about whites feeling as though they are victims of discrimination and it is "as big of a problem" as other races is interesting. The idea of whites being discriminated about the same as other races is just not true. Even if someone has never seen racism themselves it should be easy to tell that whites have it a lot better than other races and have throughout history.I think that whites making it look as though they are the victims is very ignorant.
-
One thing I like about this reading is how it gives a lot of history and sort of goes through the timeline in a way. I think it is interesting to see how structural racism formed both from looking at this reading and the movie from last week.
-
I thought it was interesting how the author mentioned that parents were not teaching their children to be bigots but rather teaching them to ignore racial issues. I think that is an interesting perspective that I had not thought about before. I had always thought that if someone was racist as a child then they must be like that because their parents have taught them that acting that way is acceptable. I never thought about how the parents just ignore talking about race.

I think that it was interesting when the author gave history of the parties and related it to The Dog Whistle.
-
I don't like how it talks a lot about Dog Whistle Politics being central to the GOP and gives more attention to that being the Dog Whistle Party. As someone who is independent I don't like it when people generalize an entire group of people and this piece does that a lot in terms of both parties.
-
Do you think any points in this reading have been proved to be correct or incorrect as a result of the 2016 election?
-
One thing I do agree with in this is when it talks about the awkwardness for whites talking about race. I think for most whites there is not a lot of talk about race because we may feel as though we will be ignorant when we do talk about it. I think society has made race into such a touchy subject that a lot of people just don't say anything when it comes up.

First of all, love is represented here, as in the Sympo-sium, as one of the great powers of nature, which takes many forms and two principal ones, having a predominant influence over the lives of men. And these two, though opposed, are not absolutely separated the one from the other.
I have noticed throughout the reading that they go into a lot of ideas and definitions of what a word means to a different philosopher. It is really cool.

The soul of a man may descend into a beast, and return again into the form of man. But the form of man will only be taken by the soul which has once seen truth and acquired some conception of the universal:--this is the rec-ollection of the knowledge which she attained when in the company of the Gods.
I like this quote a lot. I think there is good discussion potential with it.

Introduction5vading the Cratylus and Io, he connects with madness by an etymological explanation (mantike, manike--compare oion-oistike, oionistike, ''tis all one reckoning, save the phrase is a little variations'); secondly, there is the art of purification by mysteries; thirdly, poetry or the inspiration of the Muses (compare Ion), without which no man can enter their tem-ple. All this shows that madness is one of heaven's bless-ings, and may sometimes be a great deal better than sense. There is also a fourth kind of madness--that of love--which cannot be explained without enquiring into the nature of the soul.
I think that this part is interesting. I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about 'madness' or what it means but I think it is really cool the way it is talked about here.
