    1. O, had I received the advantages of early education, my ideas would, ere now, have expanded far and wide; but, alas! I possess nothing but moral capability—no teachings but the teachings of the Holy spirit.

Jarena Lee's 1836 autobiography, The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee, a Coloured Lady, has a stunning remark. Though she also emphasizes a different source of knowledge and authority, Lee in this particular text reflects on her lack of formal schooling and how she feels it has hampered her intellectual development.

    2. Take us generally as a people, we are neither lazy nor idle; and considering how little we have to excite or stimulate us,

This passage is taken from My Bondage and My Freedom, written by Frederick Douglass in 1855. Douglass is refuting the pervasive, racist assumptions of his era that depicted Black people as naturally lethargic and uninterested in this particular text.

    3. Few white persons of either sex, who are calculated for any thing else, are willing to spend their lives and bury their talents in performing mean, servile labor

According to Thomas Jefferson, white people especially those with skill or talent are not willing or able to engage in the type of low-paying, "servile" work that slaves are compelled to perform.

    1. The dissatisfaction of the operatives subsided, or burned itself out, and though the authorities did not accede to their demands, the majority returned to their work, and the corporation went on cutting down the wages.

This sentence describes a situation where workers initially express dissatisfaction, which eventually fades without their demands being met. Most workers resume work, but the employer continues to lower their wages, hinting at ongoing conflict and possibly future unrest.

    2. I had been an ardent listener to what was said against this attempt at “oppression” on the part of the corporation, and naturally I took sides with the strikers.

The phrase "attempt at 'oppression'" refers to some action by the corporation perceived as oppressive (harsh or unjust treatment). Because of what the speaker heard, they chose to support the strikers (likely employees protesting against the corporation).

    3. The agent of the corporation where I then worked took some small revenges on the supposed ringleaders; on the principle of sending the weaker to the wall, my mother was turned away from her boarding-house, that functionary saying,“Mrs. Hanson, you could not prevent the older girls from turning out, but your daughter is a child, and her you could control.”

The people being targeted may not even be the actual leaders; there's doubt or unfairness. Those in power (the corporation) try to control individuals by targeting their families. People in power should help others, not offend them.
