    1. I used to think it was free money that the government gave us, a claim openly stated by adults, kids, teachers, strangers

Another bent lie. again mentioned by White folk where any benefit/ strength another race has, White folk have to turn it into a negative connotation.

    2. when I admit I’m Indian, we’re suddenly a club

When youre stuck in an 'Angry, White sea', sometimes you find a connection with other folk similar to you because theyre the only connection you can have.

    3. Greg is

Greg is the opposite of Harness. While Harness has lived in a state of white-wash, Greg seemed to have lived knowing his cultural identity and all the while embraces it confidently.

    4. At the time I certainly had no idea that the signal was the color of my skin

This is infuriating. Why bring your racism to a freaking kid. They don't deserve to be treated like this especially just because they dont know any better.

    5. (who, people whispered, were bringing down the housing prices

Systematic Racism. "Its not our fault that the prices are going down, its the Blacks". I forgot what the actual term for it was but its when realtors would sell predominantly white community properties to African Americans to lower the prices of other surrounding houses to buy.

    6. these bits and pieces of a lived memory informing me that I existed in peoples’ realities before I was two years old.

Its like not knowing who you really are while everyone else sorta does. everyone is content with what they have but what youre given isn't the same

    7. Adoption,

Moreso, I feel for adopted Native Americans at this time, a majority of the families avoided mentioning the moral grey lines that defined the circumstances of their adoption.

    8. Those stories are told by my classmates, my dad’s friends, even in overheard conversations of strangers in restaurants

If the story is flipped it remarks the sense of community among people of lower socioeconomic class. As a child of Filipino immigrants this necessity to share spaces comes from helping everyone survive.

    9. We are your real parents. We raised you; we clothed you; we fed you; we educated you. You have a roof over your head because of us. Never forget that,”

What he believes is the criteria to be a 'real parent' but sometimes it takes more than that. it takes love and understanding. This could highlight how adopting a native child was more of an act of charity rather than parenthood.

    10. My adoption and the reasons for it have always been actively avoided

In a way it seems. that her parents seem to like to avoid any trace that Susan Devan Harness is Native American

    1. Emma Goldma

Emma Goldman was an anarchist of this time and attempted to assassinate a political figure. and im sure although Galler's views were baffling to alot of Anglo-Americans, she didn't want to be viewed as a radical figure or any but rather a speaker for her people.

    2. We have no voice in anything.

so essentially she was saying that theyve been treating us like shit for so long and the time we have a chance to be in control yall are opposed to it

    3. There is always a place for you

Im curious on to whether or not native american communities were divided by the IRA and if they were, what percentages were for and what percentages were against.

    4. He has given us this privilege to find what kind of people we are.

Essentially she was saying that by right, the United States can take this land without any repercussions. but by abiding with the IRA they can hold political rights within their land.

    5. Any woman can do what a man or a white man can do in any instance.

How did the American Officials see this? did they froth at the mouth when they heard this or were they in agreeance?

    6. New Deal”

In this time within U.S History, the US govt enacted the new deal to recover america after the great depression. So in context, a lot was getting pumped into helping american citizens. And in this sense maybe Native Americans desired support as well??

    1. perhaps he thought it was not a true marriage

Perhaps he thought the natives were not truly people, with true communities, and true religions. And this statement can be a mundane summary of the english's point of view of non-english people more so people of color.

    2. salary when he returned to Virginia, so he would no longer be simply a servant at the beck and call of the colony's leaders.

Note to self: In the english point of view, the role you played in society was tied to your economic status.

    3. Pocahontas,

i feel as if native american women's understanding of cultivation goes severely over looked in the history books. this knowledge on cultivating plants was very important and overall lead to a great success in the virginia colonies. if it hadnt been for the natives understanding of plants, which is primarily held by the women, then none of this would have happened.

    4. Powhatan had welcomed his guests with a traditional pipe of tobacco, and now he was enacting his version of an English ritual.

As i annotated earlier, Powhatan was just a chill dude trying to hang with the englishmen.

    5. Powhatan "laughed heartily, and said he was very glad of it."

Im always curious on how the natives thought about the english people staying there. Maybe powhatan saw his daughter's marriage as a binding factor between the two groups.

    6. claiming that they spoke for the colonial government.

Did colonials do this often to try and 'con' things from powhatan? or perhaps did the english think this necessity to wear a chain of pearl was unnecessary and child-like?

    7. send corn

Im curious about the english men's fixation on corn. i mean like cmon cant you just grow your own instead of trying to take the native's corn?

    8. onvert Pocahontas to Christianity and, through her, begin to fulfill the greatest aspiration for which the colony had been founded: the conversion of all her people.

Kinda reminds me of the book 'things fall apart' were essentially you see the degradation of an african mans life after christian missionaries 'convert' his village. And the book served the message of how this enforcement of european cultures erased and killed the indigenous' peoples way of life for the worst.

    9. made con· version more attractive to her

Plus im pretty sure that whether or not she believed in god, This conversion would make it easier to interact with the English people

    10. we should be friends

I always felt the indians just wanted to hang and be 'chill' but the english's greed forced the westerners to devolve into violent and greedy savages. kinda ironic huh

    11. old Jew

not saying that the use of this phrase is correct but, this shows kind of how the english really tried to write into their account to push the narrative that iopassus was greedy.

    12. Even though Iopassus had been forced into doing something he desperately wanted to avoid, colonial leaders' accounts turned the blame on him and portrayed him as eager to betray Pocahontas because of the loot he would get from the English.

Not going to lie here, but what Iopassus did makes sense coming from his point of view. Like if a bunch of aliens with their better technology came here and said "we want you to attack russia. we'll back you up" then I'd do what the aliens told me to do because id rather not be on the bad side with the dudes with spaceships and lasers.

    13. she wanted to see her Patawomeck friends

was she really there to see her friends? or is this just some Englishmen's inability to see past the western world's patriarchal lens.

    14. "hostages. "

So im assuming the situation was that the english left people of interest among native americans and took native americans with them just to ensure nothing would happen with the english parties and native parties. As for a side note, Argall used the word 'hostages' to describe the native americans, would this denote that he felt as if the native americans were enemies?
