I'd pretend they were talking to each other in cheeping voices.
This sentence shows that even though the girl is mature she is also still a child dealing with the aftermath of a horrible incident. This also shows that she is keeping herself busy. ? Where are her parents and siblings?

Two nurses looked at each other, and one of them wrote something down on a clipboard. I asked what was wrong. Nothing, they said, nothing.
These sentences suggest that there is going to e a situation about how the parents supervise the girl. The girl may be taken away and the other children might be asked questions too.
-
One of them squeezed my hand and told me I was going to be okay. "I know," I said, "but if I'm not, that's okay, too."
!! The girl is very calm about being in the hospital. When she made the comment, "I know...but if I'm not that's okay, too," this showed that she is very mature and fully understands the situation. This comment may also mean that she has had bad things happen to her and she may be used to going though hard situations.

The nurses and doctors kept asking me questions: How did you get burned? Have your parents ever hurt you? Why do you have all these bruises and cuts?
These sentences help to show that there is suspicion about the life styles of the girl and her family. I suspect that she may be taken away from her family later on in the book.
-
Sometimes I read to them, and they told me I was very smart and could read as well as a six-year-old.
!! This shows that the girl is very smart for her age. This also shows that the girl is not letting he condition stop her from doing normal things.

I stood up and started stirring the hot dogs again,
? Why is the little girl making hot dogs by herself? I think there will be an accident. The little girl seems very mature for a three years old.
