    1. Each state has a different definition of the types of teaching contracts that are presented to teachers within the state, but some traditional types of teaching contracts are explained in Table 5.3.

I was honestly surprised by all the various types of teaching contracts. I was only really familiar with the Tenured Contract and Provisional Contract. For future educators I think its really important we know about the differences as many of us began our teaching career.

    2. The purpose of a dress code is to provide an optimal learning environment. It can also do the opposite with gender-biased language that results in stricter enforcement of rules for female minority students rather than other sub-groups. A gender-neutral dress code is recommended, along with gathering student input when revising the school dress code and ensuring that female students are not ‘victim-blamed’ (Barrett, 2018).

I constantly hear the statement made by schools that, "The purpose of a dress code is to provide an optimal learning environment". It brings me to the question of how are schools able to correlate that Dress Code = Optimal Learning Environment?

It makes better sense to just give students the opportunity to dress how they see fit. For many students clothing is major part of their identity and creative expression.

    3. The speech of students and teachers is constitutionally protected, but the extent of the speech, as it relates to the mission and goals of a school, must always have a legitimate pedagogical focus and direction.

As I begin my work in schools, its important to keep in mind that both students and teachers are protected by the law to a certain extent. The classroom still serves as a place where students can share their ideas and opinions freely; but this constitutional right is used as somewhat of a safeguard.

    1. DEEP CULTURE Belief systems Intense emotional impact

Deep Culture can intertwine or even be made up of someone's unconscious bias or assumption that directs an individual's view of the world.

These views can be good, bad, complex, etc. it's different for everyone. I feel like these views can also trigger our fight or flight response especially when we are challenged on our values.

    2. Worldview

In some cases teachers can bring in a worldview that may collide with a student's worldview; hence creating open dialogue in the classroom can be extremely beneficial. When students can voice their opinions and concerns, the bond between student-teacher can be even stronger.

    3. The Tree of Culture in Ethnic Studies Pedagogy

The Tree of Culture is a great way to see both the obvious and hidden components of an individuals cultural identity. Surface culture, shallow culture, and deep culture are like a cycle; on is bound to effect the other.

When a teacher is able to understand the students background and establish trust between both student and teacher; it creates a safe space. An environment where students are able to learn freely and not fear of taking risk.
