    1. Several other African American players joined Kaepernick’s anthem protest during the 2016 season, but participation was not widespread. As the next season began, the threats against Kaepernick’s career had proven prophetic. Kaepernick’s contract had expired, and no NFL team signed him.Footnote

I feel like even black people are scared to speak out because of fear of what white people will do because they have the power

    2. when New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees spoke out to criticize those who protest during the national anthem, the same Fox Host welcomed Brees’ comments. The contrasting response to political statements — telling an African American athlete to shut up while praising a white athlete — bolstered the belief of many observers that race lied at the bottom of all this.

Thank goodness the internet was here to catch her in her act

    3. a Fox News commentator said on her show that she was not interested in hearing from someone paid to “bounce a ball” and that James should “shut up and dribble.”

This is generally a nice ironic title for the article and I applaud the creativity

    4. James, considered among the greatest basketball players in the history of the game and perhaps the world’s most prominent athlete, has over the course of his career become progressively more politically active

I just wonder why he has but I could say there are other athletes that are more politically active

    5. James and many others considered the comment racist. Defenders suggested the comment was driven by political ideology rather than race.

I feel like a lot of white people use this to defend themselves, like it's more of ideological beliefs instead of racism

    1. For one, it forces people who have never been affected by police violence or haven’t been conscious of police violence to actually see it with their own eyes. And then other people who have been victimized by police violence, particularly in communities of color who felt like they have been suffering in silence.

Yes to a point social media aids the justice system and allows people to see how minorities are treated in a day to day world

    2. You know athletes don’t come down from another planet and entertain us; they’re a part of this world too, so that’s the most fundamental part of it. Movement off the field means that you’ll have movement on the field. The second thing is I think absolutely social media and the fact that athletes are able to engage directly with fans about how they feel and move around the filter of the mainstream media and sports media which is still over all these years overwhelmingly White and conservative.

I knew social media would come up in this and it is a great and vast agent for political activism for black athletes.

    3. Edwards (2016) described the period between the 1970s and around 2005 as one of Black athlete activism stagnation.

During this period, maybe people started to have that opinion that sports should not be mixed with politics.

    4. Moreover, social movements themselves regularly manifest in and through formal organizations (e.g. Black Lives Matter). Despite these connections, it is only recently that social movement and organization scholars have realized integrating these two areas would benefit each other’s scholarship

Here they basically say that social movements will benefit more from association with popular organizations

    5. Still, a popular belief among fans and non-fans alike is that sport should not be intertwined with politic

They mention their refuter's argument and talk about it

    6. Contemporary examples of athlete activism include, Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) players wearing t-shirts in demonstration after the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling; National Basketball Association (NBA) players wearing ‘I can’t breathe’ t-shirts to protest Eric Garner’s killing and subsequent refusal of the New York Police Department (NYPD) to indict the police officers involved

All examples of sports being a means of political activism to introduce and support their point

    7. Is sport an appropriate forum for activists to engage in political protest?

Started by introducing their main question and argument for the article. This is a strong introduction that I could use

    1. For example, although injustice continues tobeckon celebrities to use their platform to advocate fora cause, conservative Republicans have also drawn on thecapital of black celebrity to help reshape the party’s anti-black image.14 Kanye West’s donning of Trump’s “MakeAmerica Great Again” trucker hat, for example, opens

From this it is obvious and supported that celebrities have a role in political activism and can easily influence it

    2. to examine the importance of the black athleteactivist as a celebrity, we draw on Street’s (2004, 438)description of the celebrity politician as an “entertainer whopronounces on politics and claims the right to represent. . .causes, but who does so without seeking. . .elected office.”

I feel like I could use this in my essay as it is a key definition that makes so much sense

    3. Because sport fans possess ordevelop affective attachments to sport celebrities, we claimblack sport stars who engage in political protest areespecially well positioned to influence racial in-groupmembers for at least two reasons:

They probably have this power because of the people that look up to them and adore them so they can easily influence their fans by their behavior

    4. Wilma Rudolph declined to attend a celebration in herhonor because the event would be segregated. MuhammadAli refused to enlist in the US Army in 1967 in objectionto Vietnam, famously saying, “No Vietcong ever called[him] nigger.” John Carlos and Tommie Smith stood asmedal winners on the podium at the 1968 SummerOlympics in Mexico and raised their black-gloved fists ina salute to Black Power as the US national anthem played.

More examples of athletes that have used sports as an opportunity for political activism

    5. Moreover, approval forKaepernick also moderates other forces rooted in group identity, such as identification with the Black Lives Matter movement. Inthe end, Kaepernick and the protest movement he leads offers a powerful mobilizing force for African Americans.

Gives a brief summary of the article, centres around Kaepernick and how his protest influenced majority of African American's political engagement.

    6. Colin Kaepernick’s protest of police violence and whether his activism mobilizes black Americans topolitical action.

A main example they use is Colin Kaepernick, which Corinth gave me as an example
