    1. ; opportunity to hear and consider multiple perspectives;

This is something i find beautiful about UCSC, the range in voices and perspectives I can listen to. I hope my own perspectives will open someone else's eyes as well.

    2. The focus on grades often shapes our very identities and sense of self-worth, further complicating the dynamics of grading.

We may begin to start seeing ourselves as better than others because of a number or a letter. With this, we might begin to discredit those with lower grades regardless of any circumstances that don't allow time to have the resources or time to work in a classroom environment.

    3. Recognize the perspectives embedded in all texts

We must understand where these authors are coming from and if even they have shortcomings in their tackling of their own social positioning. This allows us to engage the text at a deeper level.

    4. I simply won’t see these bar-riers, in large part because I don’t have to—society is structured to accommodate the way I use my body.

The way society is structured makes white able-bodied men comfortable. hence, they never care to learn or are put in a position where they must understand what other people have to struggle through.

    5. “There was one gay guy in our school and no one had an issue with him.” Yet that “one gay guy” likely has a very differ-ent memory of school.

Members of dominant groups can't speak for others, especially if they don't know another persons experiences.

    6. Do I have the skills to respond to this feedback without defen-siveness and denial?

Human nature would dictate that we are not in the wrong as we put ourselves on a high horse because we have a friend from a minority group.

    7. If we focus exclusively on those exceptional occurrences, we miss the larger structural patterns.

I've seen many say "there's black people in this level of society therefore racism doesn't exist" or "there are no laws explicitly discriminating people of color, therefore institutional racism can't exist."

    8. Although it is a common White myth that peoples of Color must be (unfairly) hired over Whites, it is false and problematic for at least three reasons.

They think that just because :this is the way things have always been" that some unfair system allowed that person of color to hold the same position as them.

    9. could deepen if he was able to engage with current theories about what constitutes a planet.

This students self-supporting opinion doesn't allow him to engage with new evidence or theories successfully, leaving him in a state of ignorance

    10. all opinions are equally valid

This is often a problem with "unbiased and fair" media. While they could be talking about legitimately credible opinions, it could be proceeded by completely unfounded ideas, but since they're published by the same media, they're given the same weight.

    11. Scholars have spent their careers developing these concepts

These difficult and complicated topics cannot be fully addressed nor discussed in a short 10 minute breakout room.

    12. Focus on understanding rather than agreement.

We must question our previous knowledge and previous beliefs in order to really engage with nay sort of new material.

    13. but may not have the scholarly language to discuss it in an academic context.

That's why I am glad to have the opportunity to go to college, because of people like me don't have this opportunity, our voices are not heard are we are pushed to the side to make the aforementioned dominant groups more comfortable. Representation matters

    14. creating conforming and compliant students who can memorize the “one right answer” to pass the test.

I think especially for less affluent students this is the case. Not everyone has the resources or even time to be on the same level with the more affluent students. The system wants everyone to engage school in the same way, but not everyone can.

    15. mainstream narratives reinforce the idea that society overall is fair, and that all we need to overcome injustice is to be nice and treat everyone the same

This reminds me of the medias over fixation on "perseverance porn." Stories that, rather than criticize the system in which we live in, would tell us to "pull ourselves up by our bootstraps." However our late-stage capitalism society would rather make a mockery out of those that could barely manage to survive. But all the media wants is clicks, and which overly-hopeful American wants to read a story that our society is terrible?

    16. but is deeply structured into society in ways that secure its reproduction.

Reminds me of how lobbying is in the pockets of both major political parties so having actual change within our system is difficult.
