    1. A fourth function of national identity is to promote a wide radius of trust, which acts as a lubricant facilitating both economic exchange and political participation. Trust is based on what has been called social capital ― that is, the ability to cooperate with other people based on informal norms and shared values.

This reminds me of Anderson's essay. He mentioned that the nation is imagined as community because it is always conceived as a deep. horizontal comradeship. Therefore, there are trust and informal norms & shared values between the members in the community (the nation).

    2. Diversity is, moreover, critical to resilience. Environmental biologists point out that artificially produced crop monocultures are often highly vulnerable to disease because they lack genetic diversity. Indeed, such diversity is the motor of evolution itself, which depends on genetic variation and adaptation. Ecologists today worry about the loss of diversity in species around the world in part because this poses a threat to long-term biological resilience.

This biological aspect is interesting to learn about. Diversity is indeed important for human evolution in the long run.

    1. To the question 'Who is the Comte deX?' the normal answer would have been, not 'a member of the aristocracy', but'the lord of X', 'the uncle of the Baronne de Y', or 'a client of the Duc de Z'

I totally agree with this example. The "class" we think that divides people into different communities were not what really used by people in real life back then. The "class" division of communities are, indeed, being imagined. People back then did not think like this. When thinking of a person, people didn't actually go with classification like"class" to describe them. Instead, people think of the real interactions or relationships between them.

    2. in the modern world everyone can, should, will 'have' a nationality, as he or she 'has' a gender - vs. the irremediableparticularity of its concrete manifestations,

These opposite opinions make me think of the concept of "Social Construct" I learned in my sociology course. There are so many things or ideas that are so common in our society that we always take for granted are always socially constructed and specially "made". It's really interesting to think about.
