    1. As a social media user, we hope you are informed about things like: how social media works, how they influence your emotions and mental state, how your data gets used or abused, strategies in how people use social media, and how harassment and spam bots operate.

Though the whole learning process I am able to understand the impacts for internet abused and realize that lots of comments cause mental health problems to people, I think that in the future we should be thinking about our comments and don't hurts people.

    1. We hope that by the end of this book you know a lot of social media terminology (e.g., context collapse, parasocial relationships, the network effect, etc.), that you have a good overview of how social media works and is used, and what design decisions are made in how social media works, and the consequences of those decisions.

I learned a lot about social media and how the benefits and harms of social media impacts people living. I think that after learning about the whole reading i am able to avoid things harmful for social media and know how to protect myself.

    1. Colonialism is when one group or country subjugates another group, often imposing laws, religion, culture, and languages on that group, and taking resources from them. Colonialism is often justified by belief that the subjugated people are inferior (e.g., barbaric, savage, godless, backwards), and the superiority of the group doing the subjugation (e.g., civilized, advanced).

colonialism is to control another country and spread their own cultural and habits to own that country. Lots of developing country had been colonialism by big countries. This can also happen to influence the languages and the living habits for the whole community..

These business owners then hire wage laborers at predetermined rates for their work, while the owners get the excess business profits or losses.

We are. very familiar with capitalism that the business owner create their own company to earn profits. It is also a very hard things that they need to have money to start the company. Therefore, lots of problems occur for capitalism.

    1. Parents post these videos online, where viewers are intended to laugh at the distress, despair, and sense of betrayal the children express. I will not link to these videos which I find horrible, but instead link you to these articles:

I think that posting this video online can allow people to laugh but that video really hurts children mental health. When they realize they are being laugh by lots amount of people, they will think that they are a joke for others. Those children would also feel embarrassing when others tell them that they saw the videos.

    1. In this view, a good parent might see their child doing something bad or dangerous, and tell them to stop. The child may feel shame (they might not be developmentally able to separate their identity from the momentary rejection). The parent may then comfort the child to let the child know that they are not being rejected as a person, it was just their action that was a problem. The child’s relationship with the parent is repaired, and over time the child will learn to feel guilt instead of shame and seek to repair harm instead of hide.

I think this is a really good way to allow children to understand that if they made mistakes, they need to feel guilty about what did they do rather then just feel shame about their mistakes. In this way, children can fix their mistakes and not to do it next time. However, if they feel shame about this they will refuse to communicate and hurt their mental problems.

    1. A target is identified as breaking the norm of a community (often not their own community, so this is a case of context collapse). This provides a justification for people to harass the target.

This is pretty new to me because I had never notice about there is target identified as breaking the norm. I think that no matter what the harass for people really hurts to the mental health. I think that social media platforms should avoid this happen.

    1. Bullying: like sending mean messages through DMs Cyberstalking: Continually finding the account of someone, and creating new accounts to continue following them. Or possibly researching the person’s physical location. Hacking: Hacking into an account or device to discover secrets, or make threats. Tracking: An abuser might track the social media use of their partner or child to prevent them from making outside friends. They may even install spy software on their victim’s phone. Death threats / rape threats Etc.

Those are really serious problems online and lots of people really hurts by those methods. Social media provide a platforms for people to better communicate with each other. But also create convenience for harassment. One of my friend had been though the bullying though instagram. people judge on her looks and send individual message to her. This actions really have negative impacts.

    1. This small percentage of people doing most of the work in some areas is not a new phenomenon. In many aspects of our lives, some tasks have been done by a small group of people with specialization or resources. Their work is then shared with others. This goes back many thousands of years with activities such as collecting obsidian and making jewelry, to more modern activities like writing books, building cars, reporting on news, and making movies.

There are lots of specialist on the twitter that would contribute and answers questions about the majority posts. Since they have enough knowledge and willing to provide help for people. I really think that social media has been making our lives more convenient

    1. Humans have always collaborated on tasks, and crowds have been enlisted in performing tasks long before the internet existed. What social media (and other internet systems) have done is expand the options for how people can collaborate on tasks.

Collaborated happen really common on the social media platforms. Lots of people ask for help on the social media. This really provide lots of space and ideas for people to support each others. For examples, like reddit, people would ask lots of questions and there will usually be people that can help comments under the posts.

    1. If you are running your own site and suddenly realize you have a moderation problem you might have some of your current staff (possibly just yourself) start handling moderation. As moderation is a very complicated and tricky thing to do effectively, untrained moderators are likely to make decisions they (or other users) regret.

In China, all the social media platforms have strict vetting systems. Even the takeout platforms have human to look at the comments that posts by users to see if it is appropriate to use. Also, in the platforms we need to be make sure about there are no harmful content.

    1. Without quality control moderation, the social media site will likely fill up with content that the target users of the site don’t want, and those users will leave. What content is considered “quality” content will vary by site, with 4chan considering a lot of offensive and trolling content to be “quality” but still banning spam (because it would make the site repetitive in a boring way), while most sites would ban some offensive content.

I agree with this and think that as my point of view. if a social media platforms keep having block spam and misinformations then I might choose to use another social platforms. I think that speech control is really important and needed.

    1. Doomscrolling is: “Tendency to continue to surf or scroll through bad news, even though that news is saddening, disheartening, or depressing. Many people are finding themselves reading continuously bad news about COVID-19 without the ability to stop or step back.”

I clearly remembers this, at the first covid appears everyone see how terrible it is on the internet. if you keep looking and checking about the news, it creates more panic. Also, the more news you read and more time you spend on reading those bad news. The social media would recommend more to you. It is hard to avoid this.

    1. It can be difficult to measure the effects of social media on mental health since there are so many types of social media, and it permeates our cultures even of people who don’t use it directly.

It is true that it is difficult to measure the effects of social media on mental health. Because social media allow us to be more convenience to make connection with the world. The free speech on the social media hurts people in some ways. Like some people hurts by the comments and judgment under their posts. Also, people now tends to edit their posts and make more people likes it, We are not sure about how this impacts people mental health.

    1. For social media content, replication means that the content (or a copy or modified version) gets seen by more people. Additionally, when a modified version gets distributed, future replications of that version will include the modification (a.k.a., inheritance).

In TikTok, there is a way to let more people watch your video. It is to buy the amount of people to watch your video. Because if we are not famous in TikTok, the platforms would not give you flow and recommend to others. So that you have to buy the recommendation in the Platforms in order to allow more people to see and like your videos.

    1. Biological evolution is how living things change, generation after generation, and how all the different forms of life, from humans to bacteria, came to be.

Just like human is evaluate by Chimpanzees, every mammal has its own ancestor. Biological evolution is very common process and it is also the reasons of why human would exists. From generation to generation, human need to understand the ways to live and how to adapt the environments.

    1. For example, there were differences in US criminal sentencing guidelines between crack cocaine vs. powder cocaine in the 90s. The guidelines suggested harsher sentences on the version of cocaine more commonly used by Black people, and lighter sentences on the version of cocaine more commonly used by white people. Therefore, when these guidelines were followed, they had have racially biased (that is, racist) outcomes regardless of intent or bias of the individual judges. (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Sentencing_Act).

This example examine the inequality and racists happened in early 90s. I think that both crack cocaine and powder cocaine are the same. Therefore, they should have same sentences on both version. Due to the inequality and racially biased they tends to give black people more punishment which lead to inequality society.

    1. Time since posting (e.g., show newer posts, or remind me of posts that were made 5 years ago today) Whether the post was made or liked by my friends or people I’m following How much this post has been liked, interacted with, or hovered over

This is very common in social media platforms. In every posts we can see that which posts have been liked by people you follow or your friends. In this way, social media platforms would show the posts that you might interesting in. In WeChat we can also see who among your friends like the posts, only if you both have this person’s WeChat account.

    1. This way of managing disabilities puts the burden fully on disabled people to manage their disability in a world that was not designed for them, trying to fit in with “normal” people.

This is very hurts disability people. Because they are trying to be normal and involve in the society. If people pay too much attentions on them, they will feel really sad and think that they are different. I think we should protect disabled people mentally and physically.

    1. A disability is an ability that a person doesn’t have, but that their society expects them to have.1 For example:

I understand disability and how we should do our best to protect their rights. Just like our school course selection policy. Disability allow to be among the first to choose courses. I think this is very true and needs more power to support them.

    1. But while that is the proper security for storing passwords. So for example, Facebook stored millions of Instagram passwords in plain text, meaning the passwords weren’t encrypted and anyone with access to the database could simply read everyone’s passwords. And Adobe encrypted their passwords improperly and then hackers leaked their password database of 153 million users.

Now lots of social media platforms will give you suggest passwords. Those passwords are unique and strong passwords. In this way, we will reduce the possibility of account being stolen.

    1. We might want to prevent people from stealing our identities or accounts, so we keep information (like passwords) private

I think privacy is very important on social media. If we lost our accounts and other people stolen it. Then it might cause lots of huge problems. For example, one of my friend's account being stolen by others and ask me to borrow money. If it weren't for him sending me a message from other social software saying that his account was stolen. I would lent him money.

    1. One of the main goals of social media sites is to increase the time users are spending on their social media sites. The more time users spend, the more money the site can get from ads, and also the more power and influence those social media sites have over those users.

Because those social media platforms need to know what are the users interests. Therefore, they collect users information and what kinds of video you like to watch. Once they collect about your interests platforms will recommend ads about items that interest you. Because I really like to watch how to do make up on TikTok, so that TikTok will always recommend cosmetics advertising to me. This proved to be very effective because I would get attracted to those advertising videos and buy them.

    1. Platforms also collect information on how users interact with the site. They might collect information like (they don’t necessarily collect all this, but they might): when users are logged on and logged off who users interact with What users click on what posts users pause over where users are located what users send in direct messages to each other

I had notice this phenomena that when I search about something in TikTok, and then the videos that recommends to me would automatically become what I search about. TikTok would automatically collect what are you interest about and then recommend these to you.

    1. n these MUDs, players developed activities that we now consider trolling, such as “Griefing” where one player intentionally causes another player “grief” or distress (such as a powerful player finding a weak player and repeatedly killing the weak player the instant they respawn), and “Flaming” where a player intentionally starts a hostile or offensive conversation.

I can understand this because I also love playing games and it is really important to consider about avoid violence in the game. I think trolling in the games happen when two player have dispute. I think not only the early internet based video games have this phenomena, I think now still exists.

    1. Trolling is when an Internet user posts inauthentically (often false, upsetting, or strange) with the goal of causing disruption or provoking an emotional reaction.

I have seen the impact of trolling. When I was in high school, we were warned that someone would attack our school with a gun. The school said this because it saw trolling posts online. But that didn't happen, which caused panic for us and the school and kept us out of school for the day.

    1. Catfishing: Create a fake profile that doesn’t match the actual user, usually in an attempt to trick or scam someone

The Catfishing really hurts and deceived lots of people and I also met people like this on Instagram. They use others people's photo from Internet and try to obtain money from people. This will cause a lot of trouble and there is no way to completely eradicate these people

    1. But as the channel continued posting videos and gaining popularity, viewers started to question if the events being told in the vlogs were true stories, or if they were fictional. Eventually, users discovered that it was a fictional show, and the girl giving the updates was an actress.

I feel like that people being attracted to the YouTuber is because of the context of her video, not because of the truth of the video. I think people should not judge on whether if the video is fictional show or not.

    1. While mainstream social media platforms grew in popularity, there was a parallel growth of social media platforms that were based on having “no rules”, and were sources for many memes and pieces of internet culture, as well as hubs of much anti-social behavior (e.g., trolling, harassment, hate-groups, murders, etc.).

Though the development of social media and having no rules. There are many people who have contradiction because of the Internet. Also, there are lots of illegal websites and social media platform. The lack of manage and eliminate these sites, really cause serious anti social behavior.

    1. If you wanted to make a profile to talk about yourself, or to show off your work, you had to create your own personal webpage, which others could visit. These pages had limited interaction, so you were more likely to load one thing at a time and look at a separate page for each post or piece of information. Communication platforms were generally separate from these profiles or personal web pages.

I think that it is very interesting the social media started at this early of time. I think that although there are lots of limit in web1.0 but it really provide people a chance to know about the society and also connect with the global. Nowadays, I think our media are all set based by web1.0.

    1. Now, there are many reasons one might be suspicious about utilitarianism as a cheat code for acting morally, but let’s assume for a moment that utilitarianism is the best way to go. When you undertake your utility calculus, you are, in essence, gathering and responding to data about the projected outcomes of a situation.

I think that utilitarianism is not fit for every conditions and I don't actually agree with this concept. I think that personal benefits and feelings is also very important. People do not need to sacrifice in order to make everyone happy.

    1. Thus, when designers of social media systems make decisions about how data will be saved and what constraints will be put on the data, they are making decisions about who will get a better experience. Based on these decisions, some people will fit naturally into the data system, while others will have to put in extra work to make themselves fit, and others will have to modify themselves or misrepresent themselves to fit into the system.

Because if the designer need to include every data, that would be impossible for them to do. The data are too wide and large. So that there must be limitations and constraints. Like sometimes I need to enter my address in my hometown. When I enter my address in America things will just automatically appears. But when I enter my address in China, I need to type everything specifically.

    1. Bots, on the other hand, will do actions through social media accounts and can appear to be like any other user. The bot might be the only thing posting to the account, or human users might sometimes use a bot to post for them.

So that we have lots of websites that have human-machine verification. This allow to avoid bots to be like humans and replace humans users.

    1. On the other hand, some bots are made with the intention of harming, countering, or deceiving others. For example, people use bots to spam advertisements at people. You can use bots as a way of buying fake followers, or making fake crowds that appear to support a cause

I found this very interesting because this is very common on the internet. In China, we have a social media called Weibo. Lots of people or some celebrities buy fans and also comment in order to be famous and wish more people to know them. I also discover I will suddenly follow lots of people and I didn't follow them. In this case, people bought fans.
