This reminds me of how my parents always told my sisters and me that the best inheritance they could leave us was our education since we are not a family with great economic resources.
To measure whether American Indian students are getting a quality education and find where we need to focus our efforts and resources, we must use the same educational performance measures across all schools and with all students. Achieving equal outcomes may take different routes, but the goal of high achievement must remain the same for all students
Measuring the academic performance of students allows us to identify which are the areas in which we must work to obtain better quality. Using the same means of evaluation helps us not to create differences between schools and students, which leads us to have a more equitable process between them.
Chief Plenty Coups' words continue to drive me as I partner with public schools on Indian reservations in Montana to improve student achievement through my Schools of Promise initiative. This work is in communities that have deep, generational, isolated and concentrated poverty. They also have rich cultures, significant histories and their own governments. With hard, collaborative work, Schools of Promise are capable of providing a quality education — as measured by any educational metric. These communities can come together to support their children and help them achieve greatness. Their students are just as brilliant and capable as any other in any Montana school.
Understanding that as a community we are an essential part of the development of our society allows us to achieve great goals that benefit our inhabitants. Finding ways to work together with the government will accelerate the achievement of these goals, and in these ways, it is easier to let you know what the needs of our community are
