    1. schoolsremaininaprint-basedculture,

I think it is important for schools to try and stay away from a print-based culture. New ideas and information are constantly coming out and leaning towards the usage of technology would be more beneficial for schools and classrooms.

    1. We turn now to describing an approach to learning that we believe honors these youth perspectives, addressing the risks of today’s new media by building and diversifying educational opportunity and intergenerational connection

This stood out to me because I think it good to know that there's more awareness to the way people learn on digital media and how much it helps them emotionally and to become successful.

    2. This whole time, school’s more valuable

I agree with this because when you're actually doing something you like and are passionate about you don't see it as a waste of time and see it more valuable.

    3. Clarissa describes Faraway Lands as a “really nice quality, good, inviting, comfortable, fun place to be.”

This stood out me because I think now, it is rare to find a website that makes you feel that way, feeling safe.

    4. Young people today have the world at their fingertips in ways that were unimaginable just a generation ago

This is very true. Most of it is because of the access we have to the internet and resources.

    5. Connected learning is realized when a young person pursues a personal interest or passion with the sup-port of friends and caring adults, and is in turn able to link this learning and interest to academic achievement, career possibilities, or civic engagement

I think everyone should have that one thing that allows them to be connected in learning. It seems that when a person has that they seem to be more content with themselves and have hope or actually even become successful off it.

A great example of hands on learning.

    2. youth were often excluded from local decision– making processes.

This is often seen in many cases. The youth tends to spend most of their time observing things around them as they're always willing to explore and are filled with curiosity. It is important to let a youthful voice be heard.

I agree with this 100%. From personal experiences, when I am asked to do or participate in something, I am more likely to do and and be fully involved if I know it will benefit me in the long run.

    4. Second, aligning media design with local issues opened opportunities for students to share their voices and participate in public discourse

Adding the local issues to a media outlet is highly beneficial when trying to get the voices of young people such as students. A media outlet is where most of their time is spent on so it is easier to receive their opinions or suggestions.

    5. Students presented and tested design prototypes, then discussed ideas for refinement.

These interconnecting components of PPS seem like the students knew exactly in what direction to head on and everything seemed very well planned out.

    6. students engaged in basic fieldwork activities (e.g., mapping, interviewing, photography)

This is interesting because I feel like there are different options for these students type of liking or what they are interested in doing. For example, there might be a student more interested in photography rather than mapping. Its a task created for everyone.

I feel like if I was part of this project this would be my response as well. Most of the time it is true, not many people worry about or care to know what goes on in their community. Just as long as they have a home and they feel safe in that home, whatever happens outside of the house doesn't really matter that much.

    1. Each point provides support for one or more of the seven stages of action.

The points listed above will come in handy and I will refer back to them when I have a design to do for my Human Centered Design class.

    2. all these execution and evaluation

I think in most cases a lot of people just do something but don't really evaluate or look back and see how they actually did it.

    3. That wasn't my fault—the radio's badly designed.

I can see where this example is going and I think in most cases we tend to blame other things and people for our own mistakes that we don't want to own up to that could have been prevented.

    4. they blamed themselves.

I agree with this because I think sometimes when we are new to using a device we think it is our fault because we don't really know how to use it and blame ourselves. When in reality it could all be that the way a device was designed or set up causes us to make those mistakes.

    5. Careful examination shows that the tip of the marker is angled and makes the best line if the marker is held with the ribbed side up, a natural result if the forefinger rests upon the ribs. No harm results if I hold the marker another way, but the marker writes less well. The ribs are a subtle design cue—functional, yet visibly and aesthetically unob-trusive.

This design is something I agree with a lot because it is something I have noticed when writing or even drawing something. I know how it works best in a certain position and how it doesn't work best in the opposite position.

    6. When the phone call was being connected, clicks, tones, and other noises gave the user feedback about the progress of the call.

This brings me to the present time and how much things have changed and how now you have choices on whether or not you want to hear a sound when you are dialing some one or typing when sending a text.

    7. In fact, we see that both the car and the telephone have easy func-tions and difficult ones.

This stood out to me because from the last few pages I never realized how comparable, different or not cars and telephones were.

    8. What is good about the design of the car? Things are visible.

I agree with this quotation because every button is usually labeled with a small outlined image of what the button represents creating a visible simple instruction design.

    9. Designers are pretty bright people, however. They can come up with a plausible-sounding example for almost anything. Hence, you get features, many many features, and these features hang on for a long time. The end result is complex interfaces for essentially simple things.

I agree with this statement, because I think it's important to have that "skill" to have an example for anything because you are showing you are able to easily adapt things to other things. This causing you to being resourceful with just anything.

    10. You can figure out the scissors because their operating parts are visible and the implications clear.

I agree with this. It is an example of visible guidance.

    11. The user needs help. Just the right things have to be visible: to indicate what parts operate and how, to indicate how the user is to interact with the device.

I agree with this. Not many people really read the instructions in my opinion, so to have some type of guidance visible on a product to be able to use it is always a good thing.

    12. If people keep buying poorly designed pro-ducts, manufacturers and designers will think they are doing the right thing and continue as usual

It's important for consumers to be able to give good or bad feedback on product designs because some things can always be done better or improved.

    13. Second, and more serious, is the lack of visibility of the operation of the system.

I think the lack of visibility on certain products in this case, the example of the telephone is often done due to an "aesthetic" the designer has. Therefore, making things complicated to use or understand for the consumer.

    14. The entrance was an imposing row of perhaps six glass swinging doors, followed immediately by a second, identical row. That's a standard design: it helps reduce the airflow and thus maintain the indoor temperature of the building.

This stood out to me, specially the last sentence because I didn't think considering the temperature from inside was important when designing a door for a building.

    15. Yes. I push doors that are meant to be pulled, pull doors that should be pushed, and walk into doors that should be slid.

This is something I relate to on a daily basis, I understand where the author is coming from.

    1. Luis’s timeline makes apparent the centrality of the clubhouse in his learning ecology— it is the main site of his production, providing him with new powerful creative tools, new learning partners, and a dedicated space for daily work on his projects. The timeline also exhibits a path into these activities from his preexisting interest in animation and games, and outcomes from his new skills and knowledge, as he found new opportunities for learning in school.

I'm glad this timeline was created. Luis is able to go back to it and see how much he has learned and has taught others. Along with all the support he has gotten and where everything began. This timeline is inspiring to me and others.

    2. Sometimes I think that during recess they should, you know, the kids that are interested in doing this, give them reasons ... if they want to do something in the computer, let them go do it instead of wasting their time outside fi ghting and arguing like other little kids.

I agree with this statement from Luis mother. I think often times it is necessary to have different options for kids during middle school ages. Often times these are the ages kids or teens are trying to find themselves and usually don't do the best things to learn about themselves.

    3. Luis describes his process in a nutshell as, “think about it, get some supplies to make it, and then do it.”

The simplicity of the process makes me want to go out there and just do anything I have ever wanted to do.

    4. While Luis was fi nding his own technical way with the equipment, the clubhouse coordinators recognized and encouraged his incoming interest in fi lm-making and offered new ideas

This quote makes me happy to know Luis had a great support system to keep encouraging him to do more of what he was doing in-regards to film making.

    5. The camera set, which could be used to shoot both video and still images and came with its own editing and special effects software, became Luis’s main tool for creating. He returned to the cameras again and again, experimenting with different methods.

This quote stood out to me because it goes to show how much can be done with such little equipment. Luis is able to adapt his creativeness to the most minimal things, and sill make the best of it.

    6. Design activities, including information gathering, creative thinking, prototyping, improvisation, and tinkering, are thought to provide potential pathways to these crucial twenty- fi rst-century capacities (Balsamo, 2010 ) .

I understand this quote and can relate to it because I am currently taking a Human Centered Design class where all the things mentioned in this quote are very important. They are important in this path of design or creativity in the 21st century because people need to understand how things are made, what the process is, what needs to be done to bring ideas to life in a society where technology is very important and used a lot.

    7. . Digital technologies offer children and adolescents rich opportunities to design and create artwork, movies, games, animations, interactive robots, and other artifacts

This quotation reminds me of the quote from the book, "New Literacies," where it states, “The technical stuff of new literacies is part and parcel of generating, communicating, and negotiating encoded meanings by providing a range of new or more widely accessible resource possibilities (‘affordances’) for making meaning.” (Pg 56) This quotation reminded me of the statement previously used because now than before, it is much easier in the 21st century to be able to create anything we want at the palm of our hand on a laptop, cellphone or tablet. With the use of apps, programs or softwares created.

    1. And a lot of times, I have to block out different needs and wants just for my own selfish reasons.

In my opinion, I think it is important for artists to have this type of mentality. A lot of times artists create because their team is telling them "you need to drop this, do it for the fans, this is what the fans want." Yes, the artist should want to please their fans, but it is a want. A want you get to choose as the artist. The artist should be able to create and give out whatever makes them happy whatever makes them content. When it feels more real and less forced it'll "hit" regardless.

    2. But if I'm challenging myself in the studio, I want to challenge you as well.

I can see the challenge for his listeners including myself. Just how us as listeners choose to explore different kinds of music and are able to adapt to it and in some cases like it, it is important to do that as well with our favorite artists when they decide to take a different turn with their music. You're getting a two in one with Lamars music. You're getting a different taste, however at the end it is your choice but you should be able to take on the challenge and give it a try.

    3. He was like, Man, a lot of the chords that you pick are jazz-influenced. You don't understand: You a jazz musician by default.

I think this is very important to take into consideration. A lot of times artists have a hard time trying to find what makes them different or how they are different when that "thing" that makes them different has always been there in front of them. Sometimes it just takes an outside perspective to recognize that "thing". For Lamar, in this case was the taste of jazz he would add into his music that makes him sound more unique combining it with rap.
