Afro-descendants in Latin America
This connects to the Transatlantic Slave Map that I shared in class. It is a fact that more Black ancestors were shipped to the Caribbean and South America than anywhere else in the Americas. Discrimination based on race or skin color is a very big problem in the U.S.
CLASS ANNOTATION: This last part of the graph was surprising for some of us in the class because they other questions rated higher, so colorism is clearly a big issue, but when it came to this question, folks hedged and said it wasn't as big an issue as they previously stated. We are curious about the hesitation and the reasons for it.

The title implies that there is some sort of warning being issued to the grandmother in the family. We aren't sure what the warning is about yet, but I'm sure we'll learn what it is regarding.
It's a way that we grew up on the border
This author is talking about living on the border, we can predict or take an educated guess that they live somewhere in the South of the United States.

This reminds of the ways in which white Latinos in my own neighborhood treated folks like me, who have darker skin and curly hair. There was definitely colorism.
