one could argue a novelist's business is selling(alongside lying) it's selling a believable world which they create.
the “future,” on the quantum level, cannot be predicted—but to describe reality, the present world.
I mean, to predict the future you must take stock of the current world around you, predictions are based solely on the current world you know at the time of prediction, as you approach your future(which becomes your new present prediction may become a reality based on your new past (your prior present)
Fortunately, though extrapolation is an element in science fiction, it isn’t the name of the game by any means. It is far too rationalist and simplistic to satisfy the imaginative mind, whether the writer’s or the reader’s. Variables are the spice of life.
what makes good science fiction is fleshing things out, if only one aspect of a theme is fleshed out then it is hard to maintain, if variables are fleshed out and an entire fictional world is created it is much more enjoyable
