These relationships can sometimes be formed in the moments before and after class, but lasting connections are built on sustained interac tions and changes of scene: student organization mectings, field trips, study abroad.

When plan- ning our expensive time in class together, faculty should consider what aspects of the material we could elicit for a group aha moment.

Play is a second method for encouraging openness. While meditation focuses on interior, individual states, a playful environment is deeply participatory.

Find ways to use a variety of places for typically passive strategies: deliver a lecture or watch a film in a special location, like the campus museum. Arrange an on-campus field trip to a gallery, library, archive, or outreach centers students might not otherwise visit.
