    1. macro scale (like gender equality) or micro scale (like making this street a better place to live).

True that. I believe that knowing this differentiation is huge when having discussions about the community. It is important to remember that there are scales and steps in community. I took a class where we had to rank how we felt about being part of different places, like our hometowns, the university, Nebraska, the United States, and the world. I realized that as the scope gets wider, I feel further out of touch. That is why specifying the scale of community is huge.

    2. It explains why community has the normative (moral) force that it does, because it is our narratives that provide us with our explanations for what good/bad look like.

This is a very important piece of community in my eyes. Community is something that we associate ourselves with, so depending on the communities that you are akin to shows and tells a lot about a person. These feelings, actions, and reactions can be both good and bad, but it is all subjective.

    3. So, one of the communities that I consider myself to be part of is the community based around the city of Newcastle

I also have a very close attachment to where I grew up. I feel that it is one of the biggest aspects of who I am now. My community truly raised me into myself, and I will always feel a deep sense of pride for that community.

    4. It must explain the feeling of pride or hurt we feel when a community of which we are part is praised or attacked

I think that this is a very important part of the definition of community. I feel that sometimes people claim to be a part of a community but have no personal connections or feelings when situations that should affect them arise. Community should not be a "bandwagon" thing; it should be an always.

    1. In order to take the emotional risk of interacting with college students about their writing and their lives, the high school students wanted to feel they were more than an assignment to their partners. When this affective investment from col-lege students was not present, the secondary students noticed. h82-110-Sept18-CCC.indd 938/27/18 4:34 PM

This is so important. Feeling like a burden is such a painful thing. It makes it easier for the individual to feel unworthy or unwanted. Having a personal connection with someone, especially one that you feel is on a higher level than you, so to speak, is a necessary key in becoming comfortable with any situation. Especially when the situation involves something like your personal life, as well as your voice through writing.

    2. As an outlaw emotion, the fear experienced by the high schoolers does not fit the conventionally prescribed emotion that dominant society might expect of minoritized youth in a college-access program: gratitude

It is so hard to feel comfortable in situations that you mentally label as scary before entering. I think that while there is gratitude, it takes time to feel comfortable. At the beginning of any scary experience, people tend to feel relief that it's over, not gratitude. Fear is the reality of new situations.

    1. I remember first feeling slight surprise. And then, I was overwhelmed with shame. I realized that I had been so immersed in the media coverage of Mexicans that they had become one thing in my mind, the abject immigrant.

I enjoyed that she spoke about this occurrence. That she can acknowledge that she still sometimes slips back into the single story narrative. It is important to see that anyone, even if they have firsthand experience, can still fall into the trap of believing only one thing that is shown.

    2. What struck me was this: She had felt sorry for me even before she saw me. Her default position toward me, as an African, was a kind of patronizing, well-meaning pity

This thought intrigued me. The fact that the roommate already had a notion of what she assumed her new roommate would be. I can't confidently say I would not do a similar thing. I need to make a conscious effort of expanding my own knowledge so that I don't only have a single story or certain individuals.

    1. try to take a positive interest in what you are reading

This will have to be a constant reminder for me. Sometimes I struggle to keep a positive attitude when reading non-fiction works or school assigned pieces. I need to work on following the steps to ensure that I have a quality reading experience and retain what I need.

    2. Step 4

I am thrilled that annotation is part of our course load with this class. Annotating is a skill that I know I lack in. I had such a hard time writing down my thoughts and always assumed I would "just remember" what I needed on a first read. This is not typically the case.

    3. The publication informa-tion tells you when the selection was published and in what book or magazine it appeared. This information gives you insights about the intended audience and the historical context

I found this to be important for me when reading articles. Knowing if something is written for the general public's view or rather for a scientific view is important to my retention. Also with older pieces I find it helpful to know a general frame of reference.

    4. By becoming more familiar with different types of writing, you will sharpen your criti-cal thinking skills and learn how good writers make decisions in their writing.

Becoming more familiar with different types of writing is something that is crucial to improving active reading. If one is reading the same format, then there is not an opportunity to retain new skills by reading more styles of writing.

    1. Inclusivity

I really appreciate this being a section in the syllabus. I appreciate that the professor has taken the time to express that all students will be valued. I also appreciate the note of "no student is expected to speak for all members." I think that is just as important of a sentiment.

    2. Duringclass we will engage in several shorter, lower stakes ac4vi4es and assignments to support your learning throughout the semester.

I am excited for a variety of assignments with lower stakes. In previous classes with only a few grades available. I tend to have much more stress and end up performing worse.

    3. Students should not write their assignments in another program (e.g., Microsoft Word) and then copy and paste the content into Google Docs.

I find it very interesting that we must complete all assignments in Google Docs. While I understand it is for ensuring that work is original, I have never seen or heard of a professor using this method.

    4. I always want to extend grace to my students, but the one area that is different is the use of generative AI.

I find this to be a very fair policy. AI has a time and a place, but I believe it is not in a college writing course. I appreciate that the professor wishes the students to do well and will offer grace, but am glad that boundaries are set as well.
