In both stories the reader is protected from feeling the irreversibility of death by the fact that the stories do not have to end there.
This is another example/ type of agency. Allowing the reading to continue the story by simply not accepting that the death happened. It makes the reader/ player feel more comfortable with the story, and makes them keep going. They want to get away from what just happened.
