    1. U.S. Marines engaged in street fighting during the liberation of Seoul. Note M-1 rifles and Browning Automatic Rifles carried by the Marines, dead Koreans in the street, and M-4 “Sherman” tanks in the distance. September, 1950.

This was a little shocking to me, sorry to those who may not want to know about this. But on the right side of the photo, you can visibly make out a figure of what looks like a head. But the body is like really tiny? I can’t imagine how traumatizing that would look in real time. I hope those soldiers got the heal they needed.

    2. In November 1947, the U.N. passed a resolution that a united government in Korea should be created, but the Soviet Union refused to cooperate.

I’m not sure what it means by created? Like created as an opinion? Or created as a requirement?

    3. Blizzards and freezing cold halted coal production. Factories closed. Unemployment rose again after the full employment of wartime.

How come the factories closed and shut down? Why couldn’t they just post off days for work? Like how jobs do now and schools? Was it because it was unbelievably cold?

    4. Although Roosevelt was skeptical of Stalin, he always held out hope that the Soviets could be brought into the “Free World.”

I like how he always held out hope even though he did not have much trust in some of those around him. He did not let anything affect him and his hope. I like that he was like that because it shows that he was confident in a way, and that he believed.

    1. The Blitz, as the British called the nightly bombing raids on London, killed at least 40,000 civilians.

Every time I read about the civilians dying, I just feel so angry. Do the invaders or attackers not know that it is so unfair as most civilians were not even involved? Why should they have to die for your desire for something. You’re already killing the soldiers why the civilians too? It makes me so upset.

    2. But no one in the U.S government was going to propose declaring war on Japan to save the Chinese.

I really hope another state came to help and save the Chinese. I can not imagine being afraid to be the next to die, and praying to be saved without knowing that no other state is willing to come save me and my family. It’s honestly really sad.

    3. Japanese troops raped up to 100,000 women and girls and then shot or bayonetted most of them in what is now recognized as one of the worst atrocities of WWII.

I feel disgusted and sad. I feel bad for all the women and girls. I feel that the only reason why they probably killed the women and girls after, is because they are evil (obviously) and did not want them to get pregnant with their child. That is absolutely cruel. I also hope that when they mention girls, they don’t mean children through 12-15.

    4. They began with 90,000 Chinese Army POWs whom they despised for surrendering

I thought that when Chinese surrendered, they would feel good about it? Does that mean that they wanted more of a fight?

    1. Fiscal

This word means relating to government revenue, especially taxes.

    2. The 1935 Social Security Act provided for old-age pensions, unemployment insurance, and economic assistance for both the elderly and dependent children.

This was the creation of Social Security Numbers right? Also how did it allow the elders to retire?

    3. At the time of the stock market crash, southerners were already underpaid, underfed, and undereducated.

Out of context, but were the farmers/southerners still able to have pets, like dogs? I know that farmers usually have at least 1 dog? Or a Cat?

    4. In 1932, nearly 2,300 banks collapsed, taking credit, personal deposits, and people’s life savings with them.

I would be so angry if this happened to me. Honestly this would really suck, what if a teenager was saving for college? I would be so upset.

    1. we have inherited from our ancestors.

This shows that in his speech, he talks a lot about Religion.

    2. evanescent

This word means soon passing out of sight, memory, fading, or disappearing.

    3. Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money

Personally, I feel that happiness does lie in the possession of money. I think it’s because I have not had everything I’ve ever wanted? Maybe it’s also because we need money to survive?

    4. optimist

This word means Confidence or Hopefulness.

    5. we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things.

It is like, he is not thinking about human relationship difficulties, or emotions; that people normally and commonly have and feel daily? Is he not thinking about the strikes? And why we have them? Just curious?

    6. we have to fear is fear itself

So, basically, is he’s saying that we have to be scared of being scared? Or does he mean that nothing else should be feared, other than fear itself?

    7. candor

      This means openness and honesty

    1. not all women were equally excited about the changes in their status or eager to leave their homes to take a job.

I remember that there was a woman saying that “being a stay at home mom is way better, as we can stay home and wouldn’t have to worry about finances”. So, when I read this, that is what I thought about.

    2. Lindbergh successfully navigated over the Atlantic Ocean in thirty-three hours.

Lindbergh stayed awake for a day and 6 hours with paper maps to help him navigate? And a flashlight? How was he able to take a break without missing a turn or use the bathroom? Was there autopilot?

    3. Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan series

So, he created the Disney Tarzan movie? Also what does he mean by “we wish to escape”?

    4. violence began when a 17-year old white woman ran out of an elevator in a public building and claimed a 19-year old black shoe shiner named Dick Rowland had sexually assaulted her.

Did the county sheriff ever found out if the claim was true? Or did they just not care?

    1. Although thirty people were killed in riots and sabotage damaged property worth $80 million, the governor of Illinois sympathized with workers and refused to call in the state militia.

This seems much nicer than what happened in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, even though thirty people were killed. I know that it is not okay to kill innocent people at all, but the governor of Illinois decided to sympathize with their workers even though the damage has cost two times more (80 million) than Pennsylvania and West Virginia (20 million).

    2. The company called the police, who arrived and opened fire. Four people were killed and many more wounded.

It makes me worried that they open fired even though children could've been present. Knowing that on May 1st, Albert Parsons lead the parade with his wife and their two children.

    3. “All growth must occur at the top. The strong must grow stronger, and that they may do so, they must waste no strength in the vain task of trying to uplift the weak.”

Mencken wrote that, "All growth must occur at the top" is he referring to our brain? Another curious thought is that when Mencken wrote, "They must waste no strength in the vain task of trying to uplift the weak" it makes me wonder on what they see or describe as weak.

    4. Standard Oil employed predatory pricing, made secret deals with railroads on freight costs, and the government looked the other way while the Ohio company became a trust controlling over 90 percent of oil refining in America.

It made since that the government looked the other way while there was secret deals being made. Since he and the railroad companies worked together to achieve what has been made.
