I see this a lot. I think unpreparedness can lead to this too, since it's easier to ask closed questions if you're winging it.
There needs to be a balance between open and closed questions, depending on the topic and objectives for the lesson.
Ah, that's true. I forget about other subjects having more "correct" answers than in English. The only time I can imagine I'd use close-ended questions is pertaining to grammar rules, but most of the class will be interpretation based.

That's not something I would have thought about. Fascinating! This feels like a shift in culture, where older generations were maybe afraid of being too generous.
If students do not understand the reason behind the consequence or do not care about the impact of the consequence, then the chances of the consequence changing behavior decrease
This is where communication is key. Also, having good admin that will back up the teacher when they send a student to the office.

This is what is most daunting to a new teacher much of the time. We just want to be on the same page and watch the students grow and learn.
