I love it when stories combine two genres into something unique, such as fantasy and western, or sci-fi and murder mystery. It really puts a unique twist on the story itself.

I like it when short stories have a twist or something at the end that satisfies me. Also, it's important to keep characters minimal and the time span short, as handling complex themes and massive scale plots in such a short amount of time doesn't really interest the reader.
