    1. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here.

      Acts such as these are still heavily used in today’s society and nonviolent protests are still done to this day.

    1. They need books that will help them understand the multicultural nature of the world they live in, and their place as a member of just one group, as well as their connections to all other humans

      I agree with this statement because I believe that all children should know and understand that the world is full of diversity and different cultures. Books have helped me learn this through reading novels such as The Color Purple and Huckleberry Finn.

    2. Our classrooms need to be places where all the children from all the cultures that make up the salad bowl of American society can find their mirrors.

      I agree with this because all students should feel comfortable about their own ethnic culture in their classroom environment and should not be patronized for it.

    3. Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange.

      I agree that books can be like windows because writers can express any viewpoint, feeling, or emotion through their writing.
