habitual responses to recurring socially bounded situations.
This makes sense because you always know what's going to happen in a romance or a mystery or a drama.
when it recurs frequently enough and seems to perform the same functions in recurring situations.
You can't classify writing as a genre until you delve deep into what it is about.
A life story is written in chalk, not ink, and it can be changed.
This is a great affirmation! Nothing is set in stone.
“We’re not trying to make pieces of your life go away.”
This is when you start creating a false narrative when you don't include all the events in your life.
If you’re prone to overthinking, and playing out every possible scenario in your head in advance, you can see foreshadowing in everything.
I don't think this is a good thing, yes you are preparing for every scenario, but you aren't living in the moment.
happened the way she thought they did
This reminds me of the saying, there are always three sides to every story, his side, her side, and the truth. One's perspective may be different from someone else's.
The more the whole world is designed to work for you, the less you are aware that it is working for you.”
This is the conversation of privilege. Those whose life is on a silver platter may talk about themselves more because they think they're the only ones who get them to success while others will thank others because they realize they needed all the help around them to be successful. This is why some stories are centered around more people than the actual person telling the story.
Are there implications for empathy if we see other people as bit players instead of protagonists in their own right?
This is a hard question for me. I think everyone should see themselves as protagonists in their stories because it makes you feel in control and having to constantly worry about others can diminish your role. Then again, you shouldn't boost yourself up and think everyone is beneath you, so this is hard. I think people have to find a balance.
it’s less clear if feeling communion now predicts well-being later.
I don't think it does because relationships can end just like that.
It may be true in the moment, but it’s not something that propels someone towards growth.”
I think through this experience, Josie found out that she can do things herself. I think this is growth because now instead of looking towards people for help, she knows that she can get things done herself, so I disagree with this.
It can be hard to share a story when it amounts to: “This happened, and it was terrible. The end.”
When you're on the receiving end, and you're listening to a story like this, it is very hard to respond, which makes sense why listeners did not like it.
Americans have sought to author their lives as redemptive tales of atonement, emancipation, recovery, self-fulfillment, and upward social mobility,”
This is a coping mechanism for me, if I go through hard times, there will be something greater for me in the end. That's how I see life.
Having redemption themes in one’s life story is generally associated with greater well-being, while contamination themes tend to coincide with poorer mental health.
I think that's how life is. A moment will either be positive or negative and we have to take both of them as is.
And these scripts evolve as culture evolves.
I'm sure the script in the new age will have to deal with the coronavirus.
One such blueprint is your standard “go to school, graduate, get a job, get married, have kids.”
This blueprint is very dangerous because if you don't follow it, you feel like you aren't doing something right. This isn't everyone's blueprint and some people, especially parents, pressure their kids into following it.
If you don’t tell, “your memory for that event may be less flexible and give you less chance for growth.” This is basically the premise of talk therapy.
It is extremely hard to tell a painful memory because in some people's minds, there is no point in reopening a wound. In other people's minds that wound wasn't properly healed in the first place so it's good to go back to. I am torn between telling and not telling and I usually pick not telling.
This developmental trajectory could also explain why people enjoy different types of fictional stories at different ages.
Relates to me, when I was younger I found Harry Potter boring, but once I reached middle school it was the best thing ever because it was about a boy going to a new school and I could relate.
And the final layer is “author,”
This makes sense because it shows as you get older, you find out who you are because of what all your life experiences show you.
These include causal coherence—the ability to describe how one event led to another—and thematic coherence—the ability to identify overarching values and motifs that recur throughout the story.
This is how stories are in the books we read, and the things we watch, so we will replicate this with our own stories.
different narratives for different realms of her life—career, romance, family, faith.
This reminds me of when I was younger. I used to separate different things in my life and didn't want them to cross paths. For example, church, school, family, friends, all had to be separate. When I got older is when I realized, they all intersect.
The way we do that is by structuring our lives into stories.”
Every moment can be turned into a story. It's what moments we choose that make life seem interesting.
And so it’s hard to be a human being and have relationships without having some version of a life story floating around.”
I don't think any human can live with being alone and bottling everything inside. It is in us to share what is going on in our lives or what isn't going right in our lives.
Journal-keeping, though a way of documenting the life story, doesn’t always make for a tightly-wound narrative.
Most people write in journals to just get their emotions out in the moment, it doesn't describe everything at once, but it narrows in on what the person is feeling at that exact moment. Sometimes someone will write and not look back and some people go back to it to remember that exact moment.
A life story doesn’t just say what happened, it says why it was important, what it means for who the person is, for who they’ll become, and for what happens next.
A life story isn't always positive or isn't always negative. It is usually both, and both of those things influence the person you are because it helps your grow.
But it's not stupid at all.
This is how a majority of people feel in their lives. When I was younger, I told myself I would look a certain way or do certain things by the time I'm 18, and most of those things didn't happen. It shows as humans we are always expecting things but life doesn't always go that way.
Annotations
We should be ready to not just read a text to read it, but to analyze it through our annotations.
discussions may generate intellectual and emotional discomfort.
I think being in uncomfortable positions promotes growth so I am looking forward to discuss things I am not always used to.
