    1. journey

This reminds me of the hero's journey that is often a part of fantastic literature, where a hero goes on a journey to complete a quest and find out about himself. What features of the journey do you notice in this story?

    1. mercy and murder

Brooks makes brilliant use of juxtaposition throughout the poem, contrasting the innocent intentions of the lovers of the poor, with their actual feelings that they can't seem to disguise. Here the women coming to help bear faces of "mercy and murder." The rhymes at the beginning of each word link them together, yet they have widely distinct connotations. They have mixed hearts--wanting to bring mercy, their presence still bring murder. Their rich and lavish lifestyles are so obviously not a fit for the building that they carry with them an air of "myrrh"--mer-cy, and mur-der. Other juxtaposed ideas:

      • "Cutting with knives served by their softest care"
      • "barbarously fair"
      • "sweetly abortive"
      • "milky chill"
      • "beautiful poor" (high irony)
      • "pretty money" ??
      • "loathe-love largesse"
      • "loathe-love"
