    1. If you could magically change anything about how people behave on social media, what would it be?

If I could magically change how people behave on social media then I would change how people interact with one another, right now there is too much fighting, hatred, and anger. Everyone is resolving to violence and life threatening allegation that would cripple one another. I would like to instill a sense of compassion, love, care, nurture, and righteousness within people. We should all treat each other with respect, and care, unless proven otherwise. I think that it is also important to let people explain why they feel the way they feel on topics and not get silenced by people who wouldn't like to hear the opposing points. The only way to have a unity community is when every thoughts and opinion is heard, and balance is given to all. Being nice is a rare sights these day on the internet because we are willing to throw each other under the bus to get famous.

    1. recognize when someone is intentionally posting something bad or offensive (like the bad cooking videos we mentioned in the Virality chapter) in an attempt to get people to respond and spread their content. Then you can decide how you want to engage

I feel like this is an ability that you have to balance, sometimes the best way to fight a troll post is to ignore it and not give it any more publicity and hope that it dies down, on the other hand you have to understand that certain topics need to address and you shouldn't ignore, like war and hate speech. There has been a lot of hatred and anger right now, and we must changed that for the better of ourselves and future generation that grew on the internet. I can tell you that there are always younger children who are looking up at you like your siblings, who admires you. We are the next generation of upcoming young adults and with it comes responsibilities, we are soon to be the generation that will hold the power and with that we have to use it right, we have to listen to one another and try to understand each other, Since this is the last chapter in this book I would like to share a quote from Kratos(God of War 4): "The Cycle ends here, we must be better than this". There is more good quotes in the new game like: "It Is The Nature Of A Thing That Matters, Not Its Form." and "Don't be sorry, be better." I feel like these quotes works well with how I feel about the current internet and also how I approach situation on the internet.

    1. The term “cancel culture” can be used for public shaming, but is used in a variety of ways, and it doesn’t refer to just one thing.

I think cancel culture has gotten out of hand in recent years, it was a tool that was supposes to give the people voices against influential and powerful people, but now it has become a tool to silence people of opposite view, due to the usage of cancel culture nowadays, it discourage communication within communities that would be benefit if those subject would be brought up more frequently.

    1. Are there wounds too big to be repaired? Are there evils too great to be forgiven? Is anyone ever totally beyond the pale of possible reconciliation? Is there a point of no return?

It doesn't need to be a large wound to ruined relationship, sometimes all it takes is the truth for you to view someone differently than before. I think that you shouldn't tolerate anyone demeaning gesture to you and if they are trying to hurt you emotionally, then you should walk away because it is not worth it to argue and put yourself through emotional baggage for them.

    1. Who gets harassed?

My opinion on who gets harassed is very simple, I think everyone is equally prone to harassment, no matter races, gender, or sexuality. Guys get harassed on social media too, but the majority of them either just laugh at it or don't pay attention at all, they just have thick skin due to the societal expectation for men, to appear heartless and laugh at your problems and that may very well be the reason why we don't see guys reporting these harassment. There is a lot of hate now days and no matter what you do, you'll be stuck in the crossfire.

    1. Cyberstalking: Continually finding the account of someone, and creating new accounts to continue following them. Or possibly researching the person’s physical location.

In today society, Cyberstalking is so much easy to do, not only does we leave our digital footprint and social media presence everywhere. These can be easily tracked. Example, I was talking to a friend the other night and she was telling me about a male friend that she has that was being stalked on by another female user that took an interest in him, she basically found all of his social media accounts and proceed to stalk him for a couple week

    1. lurkers

Lurkers are important, even if they don't interact with people, but they still follow and enjoy the content just fine, for influencers, they are the backbone of the communities, most time they are the driving force of getting people into said community in the first place

    1. Social media crowd work can also be used for harassment, which we’ll look at more in the next couple chapters.

Crowd harassment in social media has gotten worse in the past few years, with cancel culture. You can silence anyone whom views you disagree with purely by using numbers. Some may trolled the user in question, some may even doxxed the user, but they all are trying to do the same thing and that is to silence the opposite worldview.

    1. After a company starts working on moderation, they might decide to invest in teams specifically dedicated to content moderation.

I believe this is type of moderation that Twitter was using before Elon acquired the website. Since then he have lay off more than 3k employees of Twitter.

    2. Another strategy for content moderation is using bots, that is computer programs that look through posts or other content and try to automatically detect problems. These bots might remove content, or they might flag things for human moderators to review.

From what I know of this type of moderation, Youtube use this one. It's the most efficient way for a coporation of that size to use it due to the amount of upload per minute that is happening every day. However, the system has a lot of problem, and many creators on the website has spoken out about it, The Automated moderators are only good when there is people working along side them.

    1. if advertisers see their ads next to too much offensive content, they might stop paying for ads on the site.

This is mostly what run the social media in the first place, and losing potential advertisers may diminishes their income which would also drive away investors, that's why there are security around offensive content for big sites like google, facebook and youtube.

    2. In order to make social media sites usable and interesting to users, they may ban different types of content such as advertisements, disinformation, or off topic posts.

Not only are they making it usable to users but also pleasing their share holders, and potential investors. Like in the case of Tumblr, it used to be a site where 50-60% of its media was adult content, but because of it Tumblr didn't have a good image, so they decided to ban it in order to get rid of that image as well as trying to get more investor, but it backfired and kill their social media app.

    1. One of the ways social media can be beneficial to mental health is in finding community (at least if it is a healthy one, and not toxic like in the last section)

This is true that social media can be use as a benefactor to health, but it is incredible rare. As the current generation, we usually am more interested when there is bad thing happen, and looking for health and positive reinforcement is very few. We instead boosted ourself up by seeing other people fail. We thrive in seeing or putting other people down because I believe that it is in a sort of way more interesting. People of today worlds are more interest in the toxic community because it is fun there to see people crash and burn or seeing that community burn.

    1. The problem is it - we are hyper-connected, and we’re lonely. We’re overstimulated, and we’re numb.

The current generation of kids, teens, and pre-adults grew up in a time where technology is at an all time high, and with the internet, it's has buried itself into a part of all of us. We need to socialize because that is what we are, we hate loneliness and therefore we choose to connect with other through the internet, but because of that, we are expose to an abundance of information that no one person can comprehend. Facing such a tremendous amount of information is overstimulating to us, but since we do it everyday and at every hour. Our sense became dull and eventually becomes numb to all of it.

    1. Building off of the amplification polarization and negativity, there are concerns (and real examples) of social media (and their recommendation algorithms) radicalizing people into conspiracy theories and into violence.

Like in the case of the pandemic that just happen, to capitalize on the fear of Covid, seeing how chaotic it was, the misinformation of buying toilet paper somehow reduce Covid and 5G tower is the cost for covid, these conspiracy theories exploded during Covid, because internet troll were bored and were just simply announce fake news for their entertain unbeknown to them that people would fall for it.

    2. where people get filtered into groups and the recommendation algorithm only gives people content that reinforces and doesn’t challenge their beliefs.

These are some of the quickest way that a person who are vulnerable or not educated on a subject might be recruited into a cult, since they don't want to believe that what they think is wrong, therefore these cult will feed into that mentality and draw them into their own cult.

    1. Users can also create intentionally bad or offensive content in an attempt to make it go viral

This is also a form of advertisement use by mobile games app. They purposefully play their game in the most brain hurting way for the viewers just so the viewers would download and play it themself out of spite.

    1. A meme is a piece of culture that might reproduce in an evolutionary fashion, like a hummable tune that someone hears and starts humming to themselves, perhaps changing it, and then others overhearing next.

I never knew that meme meant this, I always though that a meme is something is like a picture, video that is funny that people watch and then remember what makes it funny. It is then save within the internet community for all of time.

    1. This way of managing disability gives tools to disabled people to help them become more “normal.” So there is a reduced burden on disabled people, but still an expectation that disabled people must become more “normal.”

I think we want technology to include those who are not like us and cannot use it, it's not that we want them to be normal, but to be able to fully usage it like the common man.

    2. Or a computer program might detect that a user’s hands tremble when they are trying to select something on the screen, and the computer might change the text size, or try to guess the intended selection.

I have never heard of a program that does this, this is very interesting because this too could assist the common person who is using the app, like when they are experiencing a high stress situation that their hand is shaking.

    1. When we use social media platforms though, we at least partially give up some of our privacy.

This is the common case of today world. Information that we should have keep hidden 10-20 years ago is now open on the internet, like credit card numbers, we save it to a site to make it more convenient to us, but it's also is more risky when your information is leaked. Same thing can be said for your address, we use it for amazon, uber, ubereat, doordash and etc. This is also sensitive information as you are potentially doxing yourself.

    2. There are many reasons, both good and bad, that we might want to keep information private.

We all have our own reasons why we want our information to be private, some could be good and some could be bad, but all of it could harm or even destroy your life, if your private information contain credits card, house address or something like a mention password to an important account. The other might not be so great like something you said could be controversial or a conversation that you don't want anyone else to know, regardless of reason, Privacy should be something that we all need in this digital age, and those privacy should be keep to ourself.

    1. Social media data can also be used to infer information about larger social trends like the spread of misinformation.

This is extremely common in today world. The spread of misinformation is huge within facebook and conspiracy group, they targeted people who are easy to fall into theory that they are not knowledgeable in the subject like our parents and spread false information that they would believe and recuit those people into their conspiracy group.

    1. where users are located

I believe that this is a very sensitive information, however, we have allow it in our daily life so commonly that we have became numb to it, sharing our location with amazon and uber eats, that we don't think how dangerous this can be. If your information is leaked, people can just show up to where you are.

    1. Do not argue with trolls - it means that they win

This is the right way to approach if you are being trolled, or the only way that is. Like the case of Tumblr and 4-chan, in which 4-chan users was ready to bombard tumblr site with messages and images, in which tumblr respond to trying to take back the feed with selfies, which evidentially backfire by 4-chan users using photoshop to do extreme mean things to those selfies, and due to the respond from tumblr user, 4chan assault on the website lasted for 3 days until tumblr user decided to stop responding and accept "defeat". more info is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvjwXhCNZcU&ab_channel=InternetHistorian

    1. Punish or stop: Some trolling is in service of some view of justice, where a person, group or organization is viewed as doing something “bad” or “deserving” of punishment, and trolling is a way of fighting back.

I believe that this is one of the more popular reason beside amusement and for the feeling of power. This reason was most popular during 2006-2012 during the time period that many people would consider the golden age of the internet. You could also argue that this is similar to the feeling powerful during trolling because the person who you are trolling realize they have no power to stop you.

    1. Parasocial relationships are not a new phenomenon, but social media has increased our ability to form both sides of these bonds.

This type of relationship has existed since the beginning of media, but in recent time, the internet has evolved quickly and make everything accessible to everyone more easily, with the pandemic since 2020, people tend to stay home, and express themselves through internet more and lead to increasing case of parasocial relationships with their influencer of choice, either be V-tubers, Streamers, Youtubers, singers, or models. It is nothing since it has existed since the early 2000 or even sooner than that, it's that craving of something that you don't have but desperately wanted.

    1. The way we present ourselves to others around us (our behavior, social role, etc.) is called our public persona. We also may change how we behave and speak depending on the situation or who we are around, which is called code switching.

I believe that in today society, our public persona have gotten very similar to one another, we as a society dislike the idea of being different, and in some country it is frown upon to stand out, like in the case of Japan and many Asian country. people are have different personality depends who they are with, like how you would behave around your parents versus how you are with your friends or significant other.

    1. Some social media sites only allow reciprocal connections, like being “friends” on Facebook

This type of connection usually have the most success when trying to make friends online, not only do they now have access to you more easily, they can text or message you more, like in the case of discord, you feel like you are making a connection due to them existing in your friend list and they are more accusable than other who are not on the list.

    2. Some social media sites offer one-way connections, like following someone on Twitter, or subscribing to a YouTube channel.

I believe that this form of connection usually leads to many developing parasocial relationship, usually the viewers or watchers desperately wanted a connection or relationship with their favorite star/streamer/youtuber. They would go out of their way to try to be noticed by their influencer of choice, and sometime they would be prey on.

    1. If we wanted to give everyone some amount of apple that they could keep for a few days before eating, then we would want to not cut the apples, so keeping them as whole apples might be the best solution.

We can't always expect fairness when collecting data, it's best to just collect data as it is, and not consider how important certain data compare to other, data itself is already something that we are digging into for information, so the goal should collecting as much as possible and not worry about the quantity that data provides.

    2. Data points often give the appearance of being concrete and reliable, especially if they are numerical. So when Twitter initially came out with a claim that less than 5% of users are spam bots, it may have been accepted by most people who heard it.

Data collect from humans is concrete and reliable, but with the introduction of bots in that data could lead to wrongful data, even if the marginal error is roughly around 5%, it could lead to incorrect information, besides we have no idea what is the network traffic of twitter, even if it's only 5%, it could be potential thousands of wrongful data collected.

    1. There is no right or wrong. Nothing matters.

I somewhat believe that there is some truth in this statement, due to morality is based around the environment around us, people from other places might have different beliefs on what is right and wrong, and it is extremely vast and different due to the many cultures and beliefs we have in today world.

    1. As one example, in 2016, Rian Johnson, who was in the middle of directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, got bombarded by tweets that all originated in Russia (likely making at least some use of bots).

it is common now for people to use bots to mess with other people online, it is commonly use to alter the course of polls and decision like the "Pitbull in Alaska". It is easy to make a bot and unleashed it onto the person in questions.

    2. As a final example, we wanted to tell you about Microsoft Tay a bot that got corrupted.

I believe that bot doesn't share the same morality as human so for them, therefore it cannot be condemn as wrong. I also believe that people also trolled the bot as well, feeding the bot information that we consider as morality wrong, but the bot quickly got out of hand.

    1. But tech is moving so fast. That there is no way humanity or laws can keep up. We don’t even know how to deal with open death threats online.

New technology is constantly being created and being put to use, not everyone is bound to catch up to the potential threats that the technology could provide, and partly it is due to our lack of understand of the new tech that create his separation from younger generation which was brought up with these technology. Due to these separations that older generation are less to pick up on these potential issues that the younger generation are facing. I think another reason why we can't keep up is due to the constant new influx of new content being upload hourly, there is too much content and there is not enough people to supervise it, making it an uncharted territory that we tend to turn a blind eye to.
