The children had been recreating a scene of their parents death, which is why the screams were familiar to them.

“Did you leave them in the nursery?”
This was not a good idea to leave the two alone in there.

They screamed and danced around and threw things. They shouted and cried and called them rude names and jumped on the furniture.
The children are indeed very spoiled and undisciplined.

“I don’t think you’d better consider it any more, Father.”
This was very bold, something I could not imagine saying to my parents.

“Those screams – they sound familiar.”

The children have become accustomed to doing what they please with no limitations.

There was a green, lovely forest, a lovely river, a purple mountain, high voices singing. And there was Rima the bird girl, lovely and mysterious. She was hiding in the trees with colorful butterflies, like flowers coming to life, flying about her long hair. The African veldt was gone
The room seems to only follow what the children desire now.

The veldt remained; the lions remained.
The room is now refusing to obey his commands.

The children thought lions, and there were lions. The children thought zebras, and there were zebras. Sun – sun. Giraffes – giraffes. Death and death.
The nursery is able to recreate anything that its users desire.

And here were the lions now, fifteen feet away. They looked so real, so powerful and shockingly real, that you could feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck
This is an extremely frightening sight.

This house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them
This is definitely a futuristic setting, as the house provides hospitality to them in an automated way.

watching the stove busy humming to itself, making supper for four.
The setting must be in the future, since food is being made by kitchen appliances.
