    1. Letter comes, family celebrates, girl sheds tears, stoically packs bag, thinks, Must go, am family’s only hope. Puts on brave face, promises she will return as soon as contract complete. Her mother feels, father feels: We cannot let her go. But they do. They must. Whole town walks girl to train station/bus station/ferry stop? More tears, more vows. As train/bus/ferry pulls away, she takes last fond look at surrounding hills/river/quarry/shacks, whatever, i.e., all she has ever known of world, saying to self, Be not afraid, you will return, + return in victory, w/ big bag of gifts, etc., etc.

Is this part talking about eva and her getting sent away?

    2. As for Pam, Pam very beautiful, raised w/ money. Do not want former wealthy beauty wearing same clothes over and over, feeling, When young, had so many clothes, but now, due to him (i.e., me), badly dressed.

If pam worked, pam would be able to buy her own clothes. Why doesn't pam work?

    3. In America of my time, want them to know, anything possible!

From this line I'm making the interpretation that the narrator is not american, and has moved her to create a life for his family. I wonder of what decent he is....

    4. Maybe “Girl Reading to Little Sister,” as that is cheapest? Although maybe giving cheapest sends bad signal? Signals frugality even in midst of attempt to be generous? Maybe best to go big? Go for “Resting Fierceness”? Put cheetah on Visa, hope she is happily surprised?

reading this section actually broke my heart a little because the father is aware he has let her down, and feels so deeply for the situation he is willing to put her gift on a credit card (although they can not afford it), just to keep a smile upon her face.

    5. Watched to see if kids would take initiative and pick up. But no. Kids only slumped past and stood exhausted by front door. Knew I should take initiative and pick up. But was tired and had to come in and write in this stupid book.

I find it amusing how the narrator was secretly hoping for the children to pick up. No child i know picks up when not being told to do so.

    6. Vegetable garden tended by guy named Karl. Lilly: Wow, this garden is like ten times bigger than our whole yard. Flower garden tended by separate guy, weirdly also named Karl.

Could this actually be the same guy?

    7. Have to do better! Be kinder. Start now. Soon they will be grown and how sad, if only memory of you is testy, stressed guy in bad car

I find it hard to believe that one bad day would lead your child to have the constant memory of them as a bad person. So the extra ice cream just makes them like you that much more.

    8. Who cares about stupid bumper, we’re going to get a new car soon anyway, when rich, right?

I think that the childs optimism is a good thing to have when a rough day has taken place.

    9. One end of bumper had to hang out Eva’s window and today she has sniffles, plus small cut on hand from place where bumper was sharp.

Why would this person allow for a young child to be around a sharp object that may potentially hurt the child?

    10. if any future person is reading this, if you want to know what a “demon” was, go look it up, in something called an encyclopedia, if you even still have those!

when the narrator says if you even still have those, is it referencing technology taking over the future?

    11. Will future people know sometimes cats fought in night?

I'm a little confused as to what the narrator means by this... does he mean in the future cats will no longer be around therefore the future generations will not understand the sound?

    1. My employer thrusts out his chest. "Look, Alibhai!" He says that if I walk about stooped over like a dotard, people will get the

Alibhai can not walk straight, meaning he has what appears to others as a hunchback.

    2. There is a strange pleasure in this writing and not-writing, these letters that hang between rev-elation and oblivion

why would one feel pleasure while writing about man eating giants?

    3. "When the child goes into the forest, it wears a red necklace. And when the ogre sees the necklace, it spares the child."

Why if the child is wearing a red necklace does the ogre then spare it?

    4. He rides a hyena.

I find this statement to be a little weird due to the fact that they are speaking of an ogre riding a hyena. That's a tad strange.

    5. There will be no end to this catalogue. The ogres are eve where. Number thirteen: A l i b h ai M. M o o s a j ee of Mombasa

The assumption that i am making through this statement is that Alibhai is an ogre himself. Which would make sense considering he'd like to know so much about the ogre's, and he also explains how he has a hunchback which is similar to the ogre Rakakabe.

    1. I’m Nobody! Who are you? Are you – Nobody – too?

Avoiding what society looks at as normal, and going your own way about things. Similar to an outcast.
