    1. An XX baby can be born with a penis, an XY person may have a vagina, and so on. These kinds of inconsistencies throw a monkey wrench into any plan to assign sex as male or female, categorically and in perpetuity, just by looking at a newborn’s private parts.

I really like this statement, because medical abnormalities in gender do occur, not often but often enough to acknowledge that gender is a difficult subject.

    2. There is no such thing as an “LGBTQ Catholic,” or a “transgender Catholic,

I disagree with this statement, Jesus never went around telling people they couldn't be a part of this religion because they didn't fit the ideal. He welcomed everyone, I don't see the point in changing that now.

    1. Take only what you need and leave some for others.

I really like this because we shouldn't be greedy. We should always leave stuff for others, we're not the only person using it.

    1. The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, orsome loathsome insect over the fire

I like the references to bugs in this piece, because just as someone would treat a bug God could treat us the same way, as smaller beings.

    2. We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth; soit is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by; thus easyis it for God when he pleases to cast his enemies down to hel

I like this statement because most people don't even have a second thought about it if they step on worm because it's small and there was no affect to the person that stepped on it. And it could be just as easy for God to send his enemies into hell without a second thought.

    1. but if it was hand knit by your favorite auntie, then you are in relationship to that “thing” in a very different way

I really like this because we tend to treat things differently based on how much we value them. We also hold them more dear to us because of the value we put on them.

    2. I imagine if we acknowledged that everything we consume is the gift of Mother Earth, we would take better care of what we are given.

I think it could benefit everyone and everything if we were to look at things differently from how we look at it now. We take certain things for granted.

    1. For in the last days false prophets and corrupters shall be multiplied, and the sheep shall be turned into wolves, and love shall be turned into hate; for when lawlessness increases, they shall hate and persecute and betray one another, and then shall appear the world-deceiver as Son of God, and shall do signs and wonders, and the earth shall be delivered into his hands, and he shall do iniquitous things which have never yet come to pass since the beginning

This statement to me feels like the lord is not as peaceful as a lot of people says he is, yes it says that he will come down and make everything peaceful again but before that everything has to turn to chaos, love turns to hate, persecute and betray one another.

    2. You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued, for to be double-tongued is a snare of death.

I like this statement, it reminds me of Love Your Enemies from The Way to Love. Be nice don't just put on an act of being nice.

    1. By encouraging openness between the Church and the scientific communities

I like this because you always hear things like scientists can't be religious, they can't believe in a god because that goes against their job. But I don't think that should necessarily matter.

    2. You are called to learn from one another

I like this statement because by ourselves, we can't learn much but when you learn from other people you can learn so many new things in different ways that maybe you've never thought of.

    1. But religious dogmatists’ problem is exactly the same as the story’s unbeliever: blind certainty, a close-mindedness that amounts to an imprisonment so total that the prisoner doesn’t even know he’s locked up.

I like this statement because it says that you should question your religion, and not just go along with everything just because it's a part of your religion.

    2. requirement of speeches like this is that I’m supposed to talk about your liberal arts education’s meaning, to try to explain why the degree you are about to receive has actual human value instead of just a material payoff.

I really like that he puts his own thoughts and opinions into this instead of just saying what everyone wants to hear.

    3. the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about

I like this statement and think it's very true. Something can be very obvious and you can see it everyday, but no one will say anything about it because it can be an uncomfortable conversation that no one wants to have.
