that was no play
She touched the clay.
People felt so sorry for this kind woman, so they told her to touched again. However, in people's minds, she may have some troubles in the coming year. So they were better to her.
that was no play
She touched the clay.
People felt so sorry for this kind woman, so they told her to touched again. However, in people's minds, she may have some troubles in the coming year. So they were better to her.
They were always falling out now but when they were boys together they used to be the best of friends:
She was so kind that she would feel sorry for other people's relationship.
Such was life. Time will change the friendship.
laughed again till the tip of her nose
The same description appeared three times. Her laugh makes people feel warm and kind.
She was always sent for when the women quarrelled over their tubs and always succeeded in making peace.
It seems that she is such a kind woman.
She can bring people peace.
People all fond of her.
She was sure she would win.
"She would win" repeated twice.
The first one is here, the second one is below.
win.
What will happen if she loses?
Her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell or recognition.
She wanted to escape and she wanted a independent new life, however she can't escape.
she seemed to have spoken to me out of a sense of duty
The tone of her made me feel very depressed and hopeless.
“I am not long for this world,”
Oh, he's so pessimistic.
Why did he say he was not long for the world? Was it because of the illness? Or because of the war?
night after night
Night after night
means it has been many nights.
It may shows I was so bored and so did the same thing for such many times.
He’s very naughty.
I think it's very funny that the girl thought the mother has spoiled the father. We can also see that the character of the girl has changed a lot.
hyacinths
The appearance of flowers is always related to the development of the story.
They help to the expression of the characters.
When she looked through the dark windows at the stars, they had long beams like wings...
Oh, she wanted to go home.
It was her first time to the ball, and she may not fit here.
“Oh, I say,
It looked that everyone can find it was her first dance.
But I think everyone is also friendly to her.
Perhaps her first real partner was the cab
She looks very lonely. Her partner is only a cab. It may be her first time to the ball and have difficulty in finding a partner.
nothing to say
Nothing to say is the beginning point of the disagreement.
It was the evidence of a change in their relationship, and perhaps he didn't realize that and he still loved her.
she really hated that inconvenient little house
Different lifestyles give them different opinions about life. Maybe he likes living in a small house, but she holds a different point of view.
This may lead to differences in their future lives.
not a sign
She just left, without leaving any signs. I think she wouldn't leave any thing because she only care about herself.
Hennie bounded forward to open the door and she got in and sank back with—oh—such a sigh!
Aha, again a series of action descriptions. Her actions showed that Hennie was so tired. And the description of the car is also interesting.
paused, the fork in her hand, opened her eyes, and really did smile.
The author really like to use a series of action descriptions to express his characters.
For example, here, he uses a series of action of the girl to help show her inner world.
She hesitated, glanced, bit her lip, and resigned herself.
Here is a series of of action description.
It shows how the girl's mind change at that time.
“Buried. You two girls had me buried!”
It seems that the father has a shorter temper and often yells to his daughters in everyday life. That why that he still scared his daughters after his death. However, it can be seen that the young girls missed their father.
“Of course! What’s the matter with you to-day? An hour or two ago you were insisting on us being sympathetic, and now—”
Laura didn't think it's a good idea to send these "poor creature" the left food. It's not real sympathy. Her mother just showed her pride and prejudice to the lower-class people.
but she felt it was all wrong
Laura might think this is wrong, but others don't agree with her. Mom said that "I’m determined to leave everything to you children this year", but she didn't give her enough freedom. Laura wanted to sympathy for others, but her mother didn't think so.
“A man killed.”
A man killed.
It seems that something bad happened, which may be a turning point of the story.
ROBINSON CRUSOE,
Betteredge was so fond of ROBINSON CRUSOE!
Every time he appears, there will be ROBINSON CRUSOE
the Indians regained possession of their sacred gem
These three Indians, finally got the Diamond back to India. They are brave, wise and loyal.
It is reported here, that you and Miss Verinder are to be married next month. Please to accept my best congratulations.
Congratulations to Franklin and Rachel.
The Moonstone alienated two people but finally let them come together.
That legacy (as the event has proved) led him to his death.
The legacy was supposed to get him out of trouble, but it ended up led him to his death. How amazing! But it was the revenge he deserved.
Miss Verinder had only a life interest in her mother’s property–and there was no raising the twenty thousand pounds on THAT.
Her mother is very wise. She thought about what might happen and helped her daughter.
Mr. Godfrey Ablewhite was too great a fool to have invented it.
I think Godfrey Ablewhite is not a fool. He was so brave that he took the Diamond to sell it. He was so hypocritical that he lied to everyone. He was so clever, but the clever ruined him.
He privately drops the dose of laudanum into your cold grog. And you drink the mixture.
When Godfrey did that, did he know that Mr. Franklin would take the Diamond? so if nothing happened, what would Godfrey do at that time? Would he steal money or diamond himself?
that Mr. Godfrey Ablewhite’s life had two sides to it.
Oh, Godfrey is such a bad guy.
Everyone believe him, and the charity group even make him at the center. But he lied to everyone.
GODFREY ABLEWHITE.
oh, it's Godfrey!
The guy was there at that night. He must get a lot of money by stealing the Moonstone. And who killed him? Maybe the Indians. They found the Moonstone was here, and killed Godfrey to get the Diamond.
It was plain, by this time, that Mr. Bruff and I had made another mistake. The sailor with the black beard was clearly not a spy in the service of the Indian conspiracy. Was he, by any possibility, the man who had got the Diamond?
Is this tall man got the Diamond? But he didn't appear in the previous story. How could he get the Diamond? Maybe he get the Diamond from someone else.
He is going to take the Diamond out of the bank.
Oh, Mr. Luker is going to get back the Diamond.
The Diamond appeared again! I think we are near to the truth.🤔
Mr. Franklin Blake
Ezra always uses "Mr. Franklin Blake" and "Mr. Blake" but not "Franklin", and he uses "Mr" in his words more. I think he is more rigorous and more respectful.
He has not heard yet from Mr. Bruff. I found him eager to know if I had received any answer from Miss Verinder.
It's the last turn to Mr. Franklin. He need to show Miss. Rachel that he is innocent. He loves Miss. Rachel and he hopes to get forgive from Miss. Rachel.
“That is the very point I was coming to,” he rejoined. “It is a question with me whether the experiment which I propose as a means of vindicating your innocence, may not also be made a means of recovering the lost Diamond as well. When you left Miss Verinder’s sitting-room, with the jewel in your hand, you went back in all probability to your own room—-”
Well, it seems that the opium made Mr. Franklin to do it, but what did he do with the diamonds? And how could diamonds be in London?
Myself as the Thief.
If it had been Mr. Franklin, Rosanna is reasonable to keep the secret of the Moonstone. But why him? I have on idea that Mr. Franklin was the thief.
Let the Diamond be, Mr. Franklin!
It's a pity that the Moonstone has caused so much trouble to the family. Perhaps this is how the curse on the Moonstone works.
time, distance, and novelty interposed themselves more and more effectually between Rachel and me.
It's true that the things you can't forget will gradually fade away after you experience more things. Mr. Franklin was able to get over the trauma of Miss. Rachel while traveling. However, he still in love with Miss. Rachel.
Her mother’s excellent sense
I wonder what will Her mother leave. It seems that the lady is very wise to dispose her property, as well as help her daughter.
Oh, how thankful I felt when I heard that!
She spoke directly, but it also reflected her own inner feelings.
She burst out laughing
Miss Rachel's mood changes fast. But what is the matter with diamonds? And who took the diamond?
This diamond did change the life of the family.
with Indian figures and devices
Oh, these three Indians appeared again. It seems that the Moonstone is here, and three Indians followed the diamond.
Cheer up, Rosanna!” I said. “You mustn’t fret over your own fancies.
Betteredge is still very good to for Rosanna, although Rosanna is suspected.
Betteredge hope to give Rosanna some comfort to pull her back from disappointment and sadness.
“The Last Rose of Summer”
When everyone was in a harry, Sergeant Cuff still whistling.
"The Last Rose of Summer" is a spiritual sustenance to Sergeant Cuff just as ROBINSON CRUSOE to Betteredge.
“About an hour since,” answered my mistress.
Bingo!
So is Miss Rachel suspicious? But why would she steal her own diamonds??
“I have already formed an opinion on this case,” says Sergeant Cuff,
The cuff found thief in such a short period of time. So who is the thief, or no thief(as he has said), but where had the diamond gone?
She said, ‘They will never find the Diamond, sir, will they? No! nor the person who took it–I’ll answer for that.’
Is Rosanna taking the diamond? If so, is it too obvious? However, in many cases, the most obvious person may not be the real thief.
they care just as much about killing a man, as you care about emptying the ashes out of your pipe
Here's the answer to one of my questions in reading the story: why didn't the Indians just kill Mr. Franklin?
The reason was that they thought the diamond was more important than Mr. Franklin's life, and they cared more about getting the moonstone.
“Mr. Betteredge,” he began, “those three Indians are no more jugglers than you and I are.”
These three strange Indians are not men who the reader thinks are guarding the diamonds.
Although unexpected to readers, it does not reduce the importance of the MoonStone to Indians in their mind.
got It about him
What is "it"? the Moonstone?
The Indians' questions make this story full of suspense and also pull the diamond back to the text.
The deity predicted certain disaster
Superstition and adventures of the Moonstone, attract the audiences and make the Moonstone more mysterious. Render a tense atmosphere and create the background for the story behind.
