    1. At my first enrollment, I had hoped for 10 girls. 100 came.

The ability to create such a tight community that helps empower and educate young females is incredibly inspiring. These girls will be able to use this education and freedom to make a name for themselves, and the fact that 90 more girls showed up than expected shows that they are not only ready for the change, but also want it. This may spark a change in their society and culture as more girls become more educated and are able to obtain the respect that they have earned.

    3. I built a school just for girls so that they can be free from FGM and early marriage.

FGM and early marriage are very damaging mentally to young females. Girls are locked into marriage that they couldn’t have fought against, and are encouraged or forced to have kids before they have even experienced a real childhood. The school that was built is an amazing thing since it will allow girls to live their own lives rather than being forced into a marriage that will hurt them mentally but also the potential of physical damage isn't out of the question.

    4. To empower girls, you need to educate them. That was my dream. And so I built a school, and in the process, I learned something much bigger. When you empower a girl, you transform a community. School is just a start.

Everyone has heard the phrase "Knowledge is power" and I believe that it applies here. Giving girls that ability to obtain knowledge helps them become an even more important part of the community, and schools are a good place to start in their search for education. Schools also allow kids in general to get some independence since they are away from the home. This independent and educated population of girls will be able to do anything they put their minds to and will gain more respect as they achieve greatness.

    1. So a country like America has twice as much food on its shop shelves and in its restaurants than is actually required to feed the American people.

A large amount of shelved foods makes sense since people in America generally have the disposable income to purchase food with. The accessibility to food can also cause people to overindulge justifying a large amount of food in stores from a business perspective. It is unfortunate, but a business will do what will make it the most money and if that means putting it on store shelves instead of giving it to homeless people or third world countries then that is what they are going to do.

    2. I’d seen bins full of food being locked and then trucked off to landfill sites, and I thought, surely there is something more sensible to do with food than waste it.

This is something that I witnessed while working at a food establishment where we were forced to throw away fruits if they had dents in them or any bruising. All of this wasted food could have been used and nobody would have known or cared since they were turned into smoothies anyway. Even if we couldn’t use them in the smoothies we could have donated the packaged fruits to places like the church that helped homeless people down the street. There are so many solutions but all of them are turned down due to the label of “Bad food”.

    3. we were hemorrhaging out food

The speaker really hits his audience with the shower thought of “How much food am I really wasting?” This isn’t something that I can really relate to as an individual living alone, but I think that it is an important thing to consider when talking about food markets, restaurants, and smaller establishments like delis. How much food is being discarded due to its unpleasant appearance or because it has gone bad because of lack of demand for that food item? It is sad that so much hard work and good food has gone to waste.

    1. The Global Goals are who we, humanity, want to be.

I think that this statement is dangerous. Humanity is not a single entity that all feels the same. Different people have different motivations and believing that all of humanity wants to be the same thing or wants the same thing is foolish, in my opinion. To obtain success for themselves, a person will do what is best for them and if it happens to help others, then it is a bonus. I do not believe that most individuals will go out of their way to help the world or humanity as a whole when that person could lose more than they will personally receive at that moment. Now expand that to more than just one person, and suddenly you have millions of people who are focused on the present and have their agendas that don’t have anything to do with the global goals.

    2. But the pessimists and doomsayers who say that the world can’t get better are simply wrong.

I agree with what he says about how it is wrong to think that things can't ever get better. I believe that with a ton of time and hard work, anything is possible, but I also feel that he is misleading when talking about how much success has been achieved. We indeed exceeded the target of lowering worldwide poverty by 6% passed the goal, but the way he presents success makes it seem like it is something that is quickly obtained when in reality, it took 31 years (1990-2021) and a TON of hard work. I also believe that this data alone is not a good indicator of how successful other worldwide goals could be.

    3. Do you think the world is going to be a better place next year? In the next decade? Can we end hunger, achieve gender equality, halt climate change, all in the next 15 years?

I do not believe that the world will be a better place any time soon. Although we can spend more money to feed more people, we can only spend so much money without hurting ourselves. When it comes to equality, I feel like people are so divided that we will prevent ourselves from progressing past a certain point because it is impossible to get every single person to agree and accept changes in society. I highly doubt that climate change will ever "Halt" since we have no control over countries like China and Russia that may not care about it as much as others, along with the fact that this requires every country involved to agree in making changes that will benefit the countries involved while still reaching the goal.

    1. Take responsibility for the effects of your words

This reminds me of something my mother taught me when I was younger, "words have power". Sometimes you say something and your message doesn't reach the other person and other times the person misunderstands what you have said. When this happens it is important that you take responsibility and repair the damage you have caused and clear up any misunderstandings. If you don’t you might lose a friend or someone else that is important to you. If all goes well there will be no animosity, you will be able to learn about each other, and both of you will be able to properly speak with each other with less misunderstandings in the future.

    2. When you’re uncomfortable, speak up and tell others, so they know

What if people do not care that you are feeling uncomfortable even after you have told them that they have crossed a line? Are you supposed to sit back and accept that this is something that you are unable to prevent, or should you stand up taller than before and attempt to express yourself again? Would you seem rude or overly sensitive if you push harder and does it even matter if others see you that way? Is there some kind of middle ground that allows someone to keep a low profile while also preventing a line from being crossed?

    3. Be open-minded toward others’ ideas and understanding of their backgrounds

When working with others it is extremely important to be open-minded about someone’s background. A person's background will influence how that person thinks and what kind of ideas they will come up with when trying to solve a problem. Some people prefer to do things quickly so they don’t waste too much time worrying about all the small details, others may be more cautious when looking for a solution. This mix of ideas allows the group to make the best possible choice when finally deciding on how they want to face the problem because they are able to discuss the pros and cons of each idea and can combine parts of different ideas.
