    1. Campbell stuck out his hand. He got a slap in theface. Retired Red Wings tough guy Jimmy Orlando had spotted thefan heading toward Campbell and bounded from his seat inpursuit. An instant after the slap, Orlando spun the fan aroundand socked him in the jaw, scattering teeth like jujubes.

This seems so crazy at a sporting event

    2. n a match the previous Sunday, Richard had twice viciouslyslashed his nemesis, Hal Laycoe of the Boston Bruins, and thenassaulted a linesman. Three days later Campbell suspendedRichard for the Canadiens' three remaining regular-season gamesand the entire playoffs. Montreal was aghast

Sounds like he got what he deserved for such violence

    1. The fans, they pray for two things. The first is that the Canadiens will win. The second thing is that they pray for the Canadiens to crush the Maple Leafs, but I think you don't need any God for that," he said with a laugh.

I can appreciate a loyal fan.

    2. In addition to the class, Bauer has launched an essay contest asking the question, "Are the Montreal Canadiens a religion?"

I guess hockey is taken very seriously

    1. Campbell, who had quietly left the Forum by a back entrance with a police escort shortly after 11 p.m., retorted in a televised statement, “What a strange and sorry commentary from the chief magistrate of our city who was sworn to uphold the law and as senior officer of the civic administration is responsible for the protection of the persons and property of the citizens through our police force.”

What exactly were they supposed to do?

    2. Yet Richard had a dark side. His intensity sometimes provoked violence. His tantrums had become as legendary as his goals.

Looks like he was just as famous for his fights as his goals

    3. Once the officials finally subdue Richard and Laycoe, the referee, Frank Udvari, sends Laycoe to the penalty box with a five-minute major for drawing blood. When Laycoe throws a bloody towel at him, he adds 10 minutes.

seems like a light sentence for such violence

    1. After the riot, the NHL began to crack down on all-out brawls (especially carrying your stick into one), though it would take another 25 years for the changes to take effect with the institution of the third-man-in rule.

That's a long time for policy to go into place

    2. Les Habitants trailed 4-1 at this point as the home side had their minds on something else, and that didn't help matters either. Garbage and various fruit rained down on the NHL boss, one man raced up and smeared a tomato on Campbell, and less than a minute later a homemade tear gas bomb went off.

      This seems very unnecessary

    3. "hockey was bigger than the Church, and Rocket Richard was bigger than the Pope." Roch Carrier perhaps explained it best in his famous book The Hockey Sweater.

This statement shows the importance of hockey and those than run it

    4. Sticks were high, fists flew, blood often smeared the ice, and the owners thought this was all manly and a great way to sell tickets.

This seems like it's pretty common in hockey

    1. " I am a Christian," she said to her parents; " the Devils have no longer [29] any power over me. I do not consent to the sin that you have just committed, in consulting the Demons; I do not wish their remedies. God alone will cure me; let [page 115] this Magician go away." The father and mothers and all those present, were much astonished at this rebuke,—so innocent, but yet so efficacious that they made that juggler withdraw, not wishing to grieve this sick child. But their astonishment increased when, on that very day, this child asked to be carried to the Church, asserting that she would get well,—as, in fact, it happened. This event has beers the means of converting the father and the mother, who have adopted their daughter's faith, and have received Baptism after her,—blessing God for having called them with so much gentleness.

I feel this passage just shows how impressionable children really are. She was ready to do anything to feel better, even denounce her parents.

    2. We see a great number of our Christians, who have died by the edge of the sword;

This statement is proving that the savages are not just rolling over anf giving in.

    1. Religious and secular, are continually offering their prayers and their vows to God for the conversion of the poor Barbarians of this whole country; and that in the House of Montmartre, not to speak of others, a Nun is prostrated night and day before the Holy Sacrament, praying for this result; all this makes us hope and believe that God will now open the treasures of his grace and favor upon these poor Peoples, and unseal the eyes of their souls to know the trut

This shows that the author of this letter believes his 'God" is more powerful than the spiritual beliefs of the savages. That prayer will open their eyes and lead them to believe the same way as they do.

    2. " the conversion, baptism, and happy death of some Hurons." During the year, the missionaries in that far-away field have baptized eighty-six savages,—an encouraging gain over the fourteen who were " rescued from the service of the devil " during the first year of their labors. Their great hope is in the conversion of the children, who, they report, show surprising aptitude and willingness to learn the doctrines of the Christian faith; and, through them, many parents have been reached.

This is a very sad statement. "Rescued from the service of the devil" leads me to believe that they were in some way 'evil'. Stating that the children are showing more aptitude, leads me to believe that the kids are more willing than their adult counter parts.
