e concept of the Anthropocene and sharing some key ways it has been discussed by scholars and has entered the public consciousness.
Claim we have entered a new geological epoch, Anthropocene first made by Paul Crutzen & Eugene Stoermer in IGBP Journal, May 2000 Pg 17-18 (http://www.igbp.net/download/18.316f18321323470177580001401/1376383088452/NL41.pdf)
Crutzen elaborated on this in article published in Nature in 2002. NB : Stresses humanity have become the crucially significant factor in potentially cataclysmic changes to our planet. (http://www.geo.utexas.edu/courses/387H/PAPERS/Crutzen2002.pdf)
Very good and brief video from Smithsonian . Good for intro to presentation, could play from 1.50 mins to end ??
imply be to amplify their voices, with everything we have.
we are driving these changes and we know what we are doing. we are aware of the reality of the Anthropocene. We are actively changing the future of our planet. "what responsibilities, for the DH community, does this knowledge imply?." (pgi5) We know what we are doing, This is the important shift. we can help determine what future we want for the planet. DH we must raise our voices.
what are our best, shared hopes for DH? What tasks and projects might we take up, or tie in? What are our functions—or, if you prefer, our vocations, now
The Digital Recovery of Texts. Due to computer assisted approaches to paleography( noun: paleography the study of ancient writing systems and the deciphering and dating of historical manuscripts) and the steady advances in the field of digital preservation "Resurrection can be grisly work, I THINK WE COME TO UNDERSTAND EXTINCTION BETTER IN OUR STRUGGLES." .
DH has a public and transformative role to play : Big Data and The Longue Duree
Unable to look at article by Armitage, D & Guldi,j.i on The Return of The Longue Duree - hit by paywall each time,
Look at great article on WWW.WIRED.COM .
"The return of the longue durée is intimately connected to changing questions of scale. In a moment of ever-growing inequality, amid crises of global governance, and under the impact of anthropogenic climate change, even a minimal understanding of the conditions shaping our lives demands a scaling-up of our inquiries. "
What does she mean by BIG DATA? Read Samuel Arbesman article in The Washington Post for easy explanation (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/five-myths-about-big-data/2013/08/15/64a0dd0a-e044-11e2-963a-72d740e88c12_story.html?utm_term=.54ff7fdf82fe)
To address the ecological impasse we now face is not to demand some productive new critical-theoretical innovation … so much as some restraint of mechanized production.’ This would constitute a needed ‘re-evaluation of ourselves as we are accustomed to work’ (Lennon, 2013, p. 186).
'Re-evaluation of ourselves as we are accustomed to work". Very interesting & important statement in the paper on how we should proceed. Unable to read Lennon (2013) article as behind paywall
There are further projects we might undertake, i
To do list going forward as suggested by Bethany Nowviskie.
- more effective communication
- foster collaborations
- find nobility in metadata enhancement, project maintenance & forward migration
- more agendas of empathy
- greater attention to matters of accessibility, minimal c computing (not sure what this is exactly!!)
- Libraries - need robust discourse around ephemerality. ( this is the concept of things being transitory, existing only briefly.)
- attend to the environmental & human cost of DH : CARBON FOOTPRINT , PRICE TAG
- bring technological savvy & deep historical conscience into the politics of 21st century.
- Amplify our voices
The environment’, Latour writes, ‘should be even more managed, taken up, cared for, stewarded; in brief, integrated and internalized in the very fabric of the polity’ (Latour, 2012
Note: Social & Political (D Trump!) resistance to scientific consensus of global warming/climate change. a barrier to what Latour wants for the Environment. Concept of The Anthropocene will get us to shift our perspectives, Humanities to help / take up challenge that we think on a global scale, interdisciplinary, create discourse outside the scientific field, ie popular magazines The Economist (26 May, 2011), bring discussion to public forum, TED Talks, Art Installations.....
Dark Mountain speaks not to policy-makers and technocrats, but to writers and artists—asking them to drop all pretense about the perfectibility of our technologies and our capacity to stave off disaster, and instead use their craft to help audiences come to terms with the ‘unraveling … of the world’ (The Dark Mountain Project, 2014)
Very Important . Development of framework for defining and communicating the challenges of the Anthropocene beyond the specialist scientific community, the academics, this is the first time i have heard or read the term Anthropocene and I cannot be alone in this. For example read some articles in journal THE ANTHROPO.SCENE , aim to communicate across wide range of disciplines and interests, provoke debate, raise questions
Dark Mountain Project
"The Dark Mountain Project and a plan to save the planet through writing"
‘Truly it would seem as if “Man strews the earth with ruin.”4 But this conclusion is too flattering to human vanity. Man's most permanent memorial is a rubbish-heap, and even that is doomed to be obliterated’ (Sherlock, 1922, p. 343
CO2 atmospheric concentration used as simple indicator for many years to track great acceleration / progression in Anthropocence, this now joined by long list of other indicators, escalating at an alarming rate, population, water use/ shortage, paper consumption, global warming, increase in number and ferocity of storms .......
In 1873, the Italian geologist and priest Antonio Stoppani suggested that our technologies, infrastructures, and patterns of land use had created fundamental changes in Earth’s systems, propelling us into what he called an ‘anthropozoic era’
Note : Read over Article again by Will Steffen, Paull J Crutzen & John R McNeill. (https://www.pik-potsdam.de/news/public-events/archiv/alter-net/former-ss/2007/05-09.2007/steffen/literature/ambi-36-08-06_614_621.pdf)
