He was the first person Nelson Mandela wanted to meet in the U.S. upon his release from a 27 year-long prison sentence in South Africa. Ashe later contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during heart surgery and became an AIDS advocate, lecturing to decrease stigma and establishing the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS. He continued advocating for causes he cared about until his death at age 49 from AIDS-related pneumonia. Since then, many memorials have been made in his honor, including Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, where the U.S. Open has been played since 1997 and continues to be played TODAY.Arthur Ashe, thank you for breaking barriers and paving the way for so many Black athletes and activists alike.
